    The Relationship between Reading Strategy Use and EFL Test Performance

    There has been a steady interest in investigating the relationship between strategy use and English as a foreign language (EFL) test performance. Despite numerous studies on strategy use, the relationship between the two is still not clear. This paper reports on a study that investigated the use of reading strategies in the Secondary Education Examination English reading test and the relationship between reading strategy use and the test performance. A sample of 312 EFL learners studying at Grade 10 in Nepal participated in this study. They were asked to take the test and then respond to a reading strategy questionnaire. The quantitative software SPSS (version 20) was used to analyze the data. The results indicated that participants were active strategy users, and they used cognitive strategies more frequently than metacognitive strategies. A significant relationship was identified between reading strategy use and EFL proficiency; high-proficiency learners reported significantly higher use of reading strategies than moderate-proficiency learners, who in turn reported higher use of those strategies than their low-proficiency peers. Implications of these findings for EFL teaching and recommendations for further research are discussed

    The media play a pivotal role in the democratization process in Indonesia and this is among others apparent in the surge of films, both fiction and documentaries that have been produced after the end Suharto\u27s decades of control over the media. It is important to note, however, that compared with fiction films, the documentary genre remains rather unpopular in Indonesia. Indonesian documentary films struggle to depict stories of the subaltern and those living in the “periphery” in order for them to be seen and heard by the greater masses and by those in power – the ones in the “centre” or Jakarta. This paper discusses the connection between urban and rural voices and its impact in the documentary films Nona nyonya? (Miss mrs?, 2008) and Untuk apa? (What\u27s the point?, 2008) produced by Kalyana Shira Films, an organization well-known for its work on gender issues using film as medium. Departing from the notion that the film industry itself is still largely Jakarta-centred, this article focuses on the way urban settings and voices are used to create rhetoric, and the impact of the domination of these urban voices over the rural ones

    Construct validity of the Nepalese school leaving english reading test

    There has been a steady interest in investigating the validity of language tests in the last decades. Despite numerous studies on construct validity in language testing, there are not many studies examining the construct validity of a reading test. This paper reports on a study that explored the construct validity of the English reading test in the Nepalese school leaving examination. Eight students were asked to take the test and think-aloud, followed by retrospective interviews. Additionally, seven experts were asked to make judgments regarding the skills tested by the test. The findings provide grounded insights into students’ response behaviors prompted by the reading tasks, and indicate some threats to the construct validity of the test. Additionally, the study reports a low level of agreement among the experts, and a big gap between the skills used by the students and the skills that the experts thought were being examined by the test

    The background of this study is to examine the profile of child terrorist and the motivation behind the crime of terrorism in children by using child development theory and sosial ecology theory. This research is a qualitative study using a phenomenology approach. The phenomenology approach aims to describe the meaning of the life experience of a terrorist child so that the level of belief or paradigm of the terrorist child changes, so to learn and understand it must be based on the point of view of a terrorist child as a subject who directly experiences the incident. The subject of this research is a child who commits a terrorist crime. Data collection techniques by conducting deep interviews, observation and documentation study. This research was conducted at the Juvenile Penitentiary Class I Tangerang (LPKA). The results of this study indicate that the profile picture of a child terrorist can be assessed based on the child's speaking style, behavior, motivation, beliefs, and experiences in the past. The main factor for a child committing a terrorist crime comes from the lack of figures and supervision from parents in their teens so that children look for other figures to be used as examples

    The presence of independent partner is a new thing in local election (pemilukada) of Pekanbaru city. For the first time in history of local election (pemilukada) in Pekanbaru city a parter from independent candidate has passed and can fill all of the requirements for the election. This research aims to know the strategy of Politic Communication and the used of media campaigns by independent partner In Pekanbaru Mayor Election Period 2017 – 2022.This research used descriptive qualitative method. The research subject involved independent partner Herman Nazar – Defi Warman, the leader of winning team, vice secretary and inhabitants. The technique of collecting data used interview, observation, and documentation.The result from this research showed that strategy of politic communication used by the independent partner, Herman Nazar – Defi Warman, if we see from SWOT analysis is have the power from social capital and economic capital. They also have a weakness in having network and strong basic massa. Using the opportunities by getting support from copy of id card which given by the inhabitants. The treaths are coming from incumbent partner and less participation from the inhabitants in the election. The Independent partner , Herman Nazar – Defi Warman used face to face media by joining the direct campaign with the inhabitants. They also used social media such as facebook and youtube to post all of their activities during the campaign . The outside media were also used , such as street banner and billboard that put in strategic places. And also small format like booklet, brochure, poster, stciker, calender and pin which given away to the inhabitants

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji dan mendeskripsikan peningkatan kemampuan komunikasi dan prestasi belajar matematika pada siswa kelas X jurusan Pemasaran SMK Batik 1 Surakarta dengan menggunakan model pembelajaran Auditory Intellectually Repetition dengan pendekatan Contextual Teaching and Learning. Pendekatan penelitian ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan desain Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Subyek penerima tindakan adalah siswa kelas X PM SMK Batik 1 Surakarta yang berjumlah 33 siswa. Peleksanaan tindakan kelas dilaksanakan selama dua siklus. Metode pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi, catatan lapangan dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah dengan menggunakan alur yang terjadi melalui reduksi data, penyajian data dan penarikan kesimpulan. Untuk menjamin validitas data, digunakan teknik triangulasi metode dan triangulasi penyidik. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan peningkatan kemampuan komunikasi dan prestasi belajar mateamtika siswa, dapat dilihat dari : 1) kemampuan siswa mengajukan pertanyaan sebelum tindakan 12,12% dan setelah tindakan 54,54%, 2) kemampuan siswa menjawab pertanyaan sebelum tindakan 13,2% dan setelah tindakan 60,6%, 3) kemampuan siswa bekerja sama dalam kelompok sebelum tindakan 15,15% dan setelah tindakan 69,69%, 4) kemampuan siswa mengemukakan ide matematika secara tertulis sebelum tindakan 21,21% dan setelah tindakan 75,75%, 5) prestasi belajar siswa sebelum tindakan 15,15% dan setelah tindakan 60,6%. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa penerapan model pembelajaran Auditory Intellectually Repetition dengan pendekatan Contextual Teaching and Learning dalam pembelajaran matematika dapat meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi dan prestasi belajar siswa pada pokok bahasan persamaan dan pertidaksamaan linier dan persamaan kuadrat

    LAYANAN KONSELING KELOMPOK DENGAN TEKNIK MODELING UNTUK MENGATASI KEJENUHAN BELAJAR PADA SISWA

    Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui: 1) Gambaran umum kejenuhan belajar sebelum dilakukan layanan konseling kelompok dengan teknik modeling, 2) Pelaksanaan layanan konseling kelompok dengan teknik modeling untuk mengatasi kejenuhan belajar, dan 3) Layanan konseling kelompok dengan teknik modeling dapat mengatasi kejenuhan belajar siswa SMP Negeri 1 Jagoi Babang. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian tindakan (action research), sedangkan bentuknya yaitu penelitian tindakan bimbingan dan konseling (PTBK). Hasil penelitian yaitu: 1) Kejenuhan belajar sebelum diberikan layanan konseling kelompok tergolong “Tinggi”, dengan persentase 70% ketegori “Tinggi”, 2) Pelaksanaan layanan konseling kelompok dengan teknik modeling dapat mengatasi kejenuhan belajar dilakukan dengan 4 tahap yaitu: permulaan, transisi, kegiatan dan pengakhiran, 3) Kejenuhan belajar siswa SMP Negeri 1 Jagoi Babang dapat teratasi, setelah diberikan tindakan memperoleh kategori “Rendah”. Tindakan siklus I dengan presentase 52% kategori “Sedang”, siklus II memperoleh presentase 33% dengan ketegori “Rendah”
