Publisher's Versio

Parents remain to be effective in adolescents’ emotional development. However, emotion socialization research is fundamentally based on studies conducted in infancy through middle childhood, but late childhood and adolescence have been largely ignored. Therefore, the current study aimed to make contribution to the current literature investigating factors associated with adolescents’ emotion regulation difficulties. As the first part of the study psychometric properties of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) were examined among Turkish adolescent sample. A total of 312 high school students (161 females and 141 males) whose ages ranged between 14 and 17 years participated in the study and findings indicated strong evidence for the utility of the DERS as a measure of emotion regulation difficulties in adolescents. The main study consists of three different purposes. First, discrepancies between mothers’ and adolescents’ reports on adolescents’ emotion regulation difficulties were examined. Second, factors associated with adolescents’ emotion regulation difficulties such as mothers’ emotion regulation, psychopathology, and personality traits, maternal rearing behaviors, and adolescents’ personality traits were explored. Lastly, mediating roles of emotion regulation difficulties on the relationship between adolescents’ perception of their mothers’ maternal rearing behaviors and their psychological problems were examined. Participants of this research were 595 first-grade high school students aged between 14 and 16 years, and 365 mothers from eight different high schools in Ankara. Data was collected from both adolescents and their mothers through questionnaire packets. Adolescents’ questionnaire set consisted of scales measuring emotion regulation difficulties (DERS), positive and negative affect scale (PANAS), maternal rearing behaviors (EMBU), basic personality traits (Big Five), and adolescents’ externalizing (SDQ) and internalizing symptoms (CDI). Similarly, mothers’ questionnaire set consisted of scales measuring emotion regulation difficulties (DERS), children’s emotion regulation (DERS), Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI), maternal rearing behaviors (EMBU), and basic personality traits (Big-Five). The results indicated that adolescents, both boys and girls, reported higher levels of difficulties in emotion regulation for themselves as compared to reports of mothers for their children. As expected, adolescents’ basic personality traits were significantly associated with their emotion regulation difficulties even after controlling the effects of socio-demographic variables, mothers’ emotion regulation, psychological symptoms and their maternal rearing behaviors. Finally, mediation analyses indicated that the link between perceived maternal rearing behaviors and adolescents’ psychological problems occurs through emotion regulation difficulties of adolescents. Findings were discussed within the relevant literature.Ph.D. - Doctoral Progra

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationships between perceived maternal rejection and psychological distress of adolescents. In addition to that, mediator roles of early maladaptive schemas in this relationship were explored. A total of 356 second-grade high school students (198 females and 158 males) were participated in the study. Participants ranged in age from 15 to 18 (M = 16.17, SD= 0.53). Data was collected by a questionnaire packet consisting Demographic data form, Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ), Parental Acceptance and Rejection Questionnaire (PARQ) , trait part of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T), trait part of State-Trait Anger Inventory (ANG-T) Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS). Preceding the main analyses, factor analysis for YSQ was performed. It yielded three higher-order factors for YSQ as Impaired Limits- Exaggerated Standards, Disconnection-Rejection, and Impaired Autonomy-Other Directedness. Following factor analysis, ANOVAs were employed to assess differences between adolescents perceiving high acceptance and high rejection in terms of psychological distress measures (i.e., anger, positive affect, negative affect, and anxiety). It was found that adolescents perceiving high rejection were more likely to experience anger, negative affect, and anxiety than those perceiving high acceptance. In order to test whether Impaired Limits-Exaggerated Standards, Disconnection-Rejection, and Impaired Autonomy-Other Directedness mediate the relationship between perceptions of maternal rejection and adolescents’ anger, positive affect, negative affect, and anxiety respectively, separate hierarchical regression analyses were conducted as suggested by Baron and Kenny (1986). Mediation analyses revealed in general that both maternal rejection and schema domains had main effects on psychological distress measures. However, none of the schema domains did mediate the relationship between maternal rejection and psychological distress measures except for the disconnection-rejection schema domain. The result revealed that disconnection-rejection schema domain mediated the relationship between maternal rejection and anger. These findings were discussed with reference to the relevant literature. Future research topics were suggested and therapeutic implications of the study were discussed.M.S. - Master of Scienc

Psychometric Properties of the Turkish version of Looming Maladaptive Style Questionnaire (LMSQ) (Turkish)

    No full text
Objectives: Most of the studies that examine cognitive vulnerability tend to focus on cognitive vulnerability for depression and explain anxiety through its intersection with depression. Looming Cognitive Style (LCS) was suggested as a cognitive vulnerability model that is specific for anxiety. According to the model, people who have looming vulnerability tend to evaluate the threats coming from the environment as more overwhelming than they actually are and are constantly hypervigilant to the threat cues that may come from the environment. This pattern plays an important role in both generation and maintenance of anxiety disorders. A two-factor looming vulnerability scale was developed to assess looming cognitive style and the present study aims to adapt the scale into Turkish and examine its psychometric characteristics. Method: The sample is composed of 657 university students between the ages of 18 and 29. The participants were administered LMSQ-R as well as scales that assess anxiety, depression, and worry. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis results supported the original factor structure of the scale providing two distinct, but correlated factors as social and physical looming. In addition to that, total score and subscale scores had moderate to high correlations with other study variables and reliability scores appearing close to the original form provides support for the reliability of the scale. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the LMSQ-R is a reliable and valid scale that can be used with Turkish population

Participants were 79 adolescents who are in institutional care, ranged in age between 10 and 17 years old and 95 adolescents living with their family, ranged in age between 10 and 17 years old in Diyarbakır. The results of which compare two groups in terms of study variables revealed that adolescents in institutional care have a weaker social support system and they have more difficulty in regulating their emotions. Separate hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to examine the predictors of prosocial and problem behaviors of adolescents who are in institutional care and of those living with their families. The results revealed that perceived peer support and adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies predict prosocial behaviors of adolescents in institutional care. On the other hand, perceived peer support, adaptive and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies predict the problem behaviors of adolescents in institutional care. Adaptive and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies predict prosocial behaviors of adolescents living with their families. On the other hand, perceived peer support and maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies predict the problem behaviors of adolescents living with their families.Publisher's Versio

OBJECTIVES: This observational study assessed compliance with the anti-tobacco Law Nb 4207 with regard to taxis in Çankaya district, Ankara. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This descriptive study was conducted in Kızılay, Kuğulu, and Tandoğan intersections on January 18-23, 2016 between 9.00-11.00 and 14.00-16.00 hours in Ankara. Data regarding the status of the taxi (either cruising or not), smoking inside taxis, smoking status of the taxi drivers and/or clients, location of the clients in the taxi, presence of a child in the taxi, and status of the windows (open or not) were recorded using a data-gathering form. RESULTS: Three thousand six hundred fifty-six taxis were evaluated, of which 79 (2.2%) taxi drivers were observed smoking. Clients were observed smoking in 17 taxis (1.3%). Ninety-four taxi drivers and/or clients (2.6%) were observed smoking. Taxi drivers smoked more frequently in the absence of a client. In addition, a smoking client influenced the taxi driver’s smoking status (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Violation of the anti-tobacco Law Nb 4207 was observed. In this regard, the number of inspections needs to be increased. Systematic training programs for the taxi drivers regarding the risks of tobacco should be a priority. Preventive studies concerning the hazards of passive smoking should be also conducted at a community level.Scopu

Natural history and genetic spectrum of the Turkish metaphyseal dysplasia cohort, including rare types caused by biallelic COL10A1, COL2A1, and LBR variants

© 2022 Elsevier Inc.Background: Metaphyseal chondrodysplasias are a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by short and bowed long bones and metaphyseal abnormality. The aim of this study is to investigate the genetic etiology and prognostic findings in patients with metaphyseal dysplasia. Methods: Twenty-four Turkish patients were included in this study and 13 of them were followed for 2–21 years. COL10A1, RMRP sequencing and whole exome sequencing were performed. Results: Results: Seven heterozygous pathogenic variants in COL10A1 were detected in 17 patients with Schmid type metaphyseal chondrodysplasia(MCDS). The phenotype was more severe in patients with heterozygous missense variants (one in signal peptide domain at the N-terminus of the protein, the other, class-1 group mutation at NC1 domain) compared to the patients with truncating variants. Short stature and coxa vara deformity appeared after 3 and 5 years of age, respectively, while large femoral head resolved after the age of 13 years in MCDS group. Interestingly, one patient with severe phenotype also had a biallelic missense variant in NC1 domain of COL10A1. Three patients with biallelic mutations in RMRP had prenatal onset short stature with short limb, and typical findings of cartilage hair hypoplasia (CHH). While immunodeficiency or recurrent infections were not observed, resistant congenital anemia was detected in one. Biallelic mutation in LBR was described in a patient with prenatal onset short stature, short and curved limb and metaphyseal abnormalities. Unlike previously reported patients, this patient had ectodermal findings, similar to CHH. A biallelic COL2A1 mutation was also found in the patient with lower limb deformities and metaphyseal involvement without vertebral and epiphyseal changes. Conclusion: Long-term clinical characteristics are presented in a metaphyseal dysplasia cohort, including rare types caused by biallelic COL10A1, COL2A1, and LBR variants. We also point out that the domains where mutations on COL10A1 take place are important in the genotype-phenotype relationship

Comparison of clinical features in patients with vestibular migraine and migraine

Vestibular migraine (VM) is accepted as the most common cause of spontaneous episodic vertigo. In most patients, vestibular symptoms follow migraine headaches that begin earlier in life. The aim of this multicenter retrospective study was to find out the differences between migraine patients without any vestibular symptoms (MwoV) and VM patients and to delineate the specific clinical features associated with VM. MwoV and VM patients were compared regarding demographic features, migraine headache years, headache attack frequency, intensity, symptoms associated with headache and vertigo attacks, presence of menopause, history of motion sickness and family history of migraine. Four-hundred and forty patients with MwoV and 408 patients with VM were included in the study. Migraine with aura was more frequent in patients with MwoV (p = 0.035). Migraine headache years was longer (p < 0.001) and headache intensity was higher in patients with VM (p = 0.020). Aural fullness/tinnitus was more common in patients with VM (p < 0.001) when all other associated symptoms were more frequent in patients with MwoV (p < 0.001) as well as attack triggers (p < 0.05). Presence of menopause and motion sickness history was reported more frequently by VM patients (p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis indicated that longstanding history of migraine with severe headache attacks, aural fullness/tinnitus accompanying attacks, presence of menopause, previous motion sickness history were the differentiating clinical features of patients with VM
