Non universality of entanglement convertibility

Recently, it has been suggested that operational properties connected to quantum computation can be alternative indicators of quantum phase transitions. In this work we systematically study these operational properties in 1D systems that present phase transitions of different orders. For this purpose, we evaluate the local convertibility between bipartite ground states. Our results suggest that the operational properties, related to non-analyticities of the entanglement spectrum, are good detectors of explicit symmetries of the model, but not necessarily of phase transitions. We also show that thermodynamically equivalent phases, such as Luttinger liquids, may display different convertibility properties depending on the underlying microscopic model.Comment: 5 pages + references, 4 figures - improved versio

Growing neural gas as a memory mechanism of a heuristic to solve a community detection problem in networks

Iterative heuristics are commonly used to address combinatorial optimization problems. However, to meet both robustness and efficiency with these methods when their iterations are independent, it is necessary to consider a high number of iterations or to include local search-based strategies in them. Both approaches are very time-consuming and, consequently, not efficient for medium and large-scale instances of combinatorial optimization problems. In particular, the community detection problem in networks is well-known due to the instances with hundreds to thousands of vertices. In the literature, the heuristics to detect communities in networks that use a local search are those that achieve the partitions with the best solution values. Nevertheless, they are not suitable to tackle medium to large scale networks. This paper presents an adaptive heuristic, named GNGClus, that uses the neural network Growing Neural Gas to play the role of memory mechanism. The computational experiment with LFR networks indicates that the proposed strategy significantly outperformed the same solution method with no memory mechanism. In addition, GNGClus was very competitive with a version of the heuristic that employs an elite set of solutions to guide the solution search. (C) 2016 The Authors. Late-onset of eruptive syringomas: a diagnostic challenge

Syringoma is a benign, adnexal tumor of the eccrine sweat gland ducts. Eruptive syringomas are a rare variant, occurring before or during puberty in most cases. A 57-year-old man was observed in our department, with a 10-year history of multiple brownish papules (1-4mm in diameter), localized on the neck, shoulders, trunk and axillae. The clinical diagnosis was cutaneous mastocytosis. Histopathological examination from a papule in the trunk was compatible with the diagnosis of syringoma. The patient was treated with isotretinoin, without any improvement. The clinical diagnosis of eruptive syringoma is difficult and histological examination is crucial for its diagnosis. Long-term morbidity is not associated with syringomas; they are treated for cosmetic reasons with unsatisfactory results

Global Alfven Wave Heating of the Magnetosphere of Young Stars

Excitation of a Global Alfven wave (GAW) is proposed as a viable mechanism to explain plasma heating in the magnetosphere of young stars. The wave and basic plasma parameters are compatible with the requirement that the dissipation length of GAWs be comparable to the distance between the shocked region at the star's surface and the truncation region in the accretion disk. A two-fluid magnetohydrodynamic plasma model is used in the analysis. A current carrying filament along magnetic field lines acts as a waveguide for the GAW. The current in the filament is driven by plasma waves along the magnetic field lines and/or by plasma crossing magnetic field lines in the truncated region of the disk of the accreting plasma. The conversion of a small fraction of the kinetic energy into GAW energy is sufficient to heat the plasma filament to observed temperatures.Comment: Submitted to ApJ, aheatf.tex, 2 figure

Visita precursora do projeto Rondon: relato de experiências no estado do Pará, em Santa Luzia do Pará, em 2007, e em São Domingos do Araguaia, em 2015

Trabalho apresentado no II Congresso Nacional do PROJETO RONDON, realizado em Florianópolis, SC, no período de 23 a 25 de setembro de 2015 - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.A visita precursora tem a finalidade de fazer o reconhecimento local, como manter contato com a comunidade e apoio dos órgãos públicos, assim como flexibilizar a proposta encaminhada nas condições do município, prepararem alojamento e alimentação para alunos e professores durante os dezesseis dias que permanecem nas Operações, escolhida para a IES atuar. No momento da visita precursora o Projeto Rondon sai da teoria e vai para a prática, além do que serve para transformar a proposta em plano de trabalho factível as localidades. Este artigo tem o objetivo de descrever as experiências na visita precursora nos Municípios de Santa Luzia do Pará, em 2007 e em São Domingos do Araguaia, em 2015, no Estado do Pará, como planejamento para a Operação Grão-Pará e para a operação Itacaiúnas, em dois momentos diferentes do Projeto Rondon. Foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica descritiva e de relato de caso sobre a visita precursora em duas épocas do Projeto Rondon, durante a Operação Grão-Pará em 2007 e a Operação Itacaiúnas em 2015, ambas no Estado do Pará. Foi observado durante a pesquisa que visita precursora tem passado por muitas transformações, necessária as realidades do Projeto Rondon, das IES e principalmente dos Municípios envolvidos, é um instrumento de planejamento para que as Operações ocorram com eficiência e eficácia à época de sua realização. A vista precursora é a composição de cenários para a realização das Operações do Projeto Rondon as quais se destinam, até mesmo para manter contato com a comunidade, a fim de apoiar os Rondonistas, principalmente em se tratando da hospedagem e alimentação dos alunos e professores das equipes do conjunto A e B. Especificamente as visitas precursoras com Santa Luzia do Pará, destinadas as Operações Grão-Pará em 2007 e Itacaiúnas em 2015, foram infinitamente importantes para delinearmos e ajustarmos a proposta à realidade do município, até mesmo para organizarmos os minicursos, workshops, entre outras atividades, durante as Operações

Avaliação de fungicidas no controle do mal-das-folhas (Microcyclus ulei) da seringueira, em viveiro.

Objetivando o controle do mal-das-folhas (Microcyclus ulei) da seringueira, foram avaliados, em viveiro, os fungicidas Triadimefon, Carbendazim, Triforine, Dithianon, Tridemorph, nos intervalos de sete a catorze dias. Constatou-se que os fungicidas Triadimefon e Triforine, nas doses e intervalos testados, foram os tratamentos mais eficazes. Carbendazim e Dithianon apresentaram um baixo nivel de eficiencia. Tridemorph foi toxico nas doses utilizadas

Rational engineering of nanoporous anodic alumina optical bandpass filters

First published online 07 Jul 2016Herein, we present a rationally designed advanced nanofabrication approach aiming at producing a new type of optical bandpass filters based on nanoporous anodic alumina photonic crystals. The photonic stop band of nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) is engineered in depth by means of a pseudo-stepwise pulse anodisation (PSPA) approach consisting of pseudo-stepwise asymmetric current density pulses. This nanofabrication method makes it possible to tune the transmission bands of NAA at specific wavelengths and bandwidths, which can be broadly modified across the UV-visible-NIR spectrum through the anodisation period (i.e. time between consecutive pulses). First, we establish the effect of the anodisation period as a means of tuning the position and width of the transmission bands of NAA across the UV-visible-NIR spectrum. To this end, a set of nanoporous anodic alumina bandpass filters (NAA-BPFs) are produced with different anodisation periods, ranging from 500 to 1200 s, and their optical properties (i.e. characteristic transmission bands and interferometric colours) are systematically assessed. Then, we demonstrate that the rational combination of stacked NAA-BPFs consisting of layers of NAA produced with different PSPA periods can be readily used to create a set of unique and highly selective optical bandpass filters with characteristic transmission bands, the position, width and number of which can be precisely engineered by this rational anodisation approach. Finally, as a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate that the superposition of stacked NAA-BPFs produced with slight modifications of the anodisation period enables the fabrication of NAA-BPFs with unprecedented broad transmission bands across the UV-visible-NIR spectrum. The results obtained from our study constitute the first comprehensive rationale towards advanced NAA-BPFs with fully controllable photonic properties.
