Fruits and vegetables: comparative analysis of total phenolics and total flavonoids contents
fibra alimentar, vitaminas e minerais.
Daily consumption of fruits and vegetables is par t of the World Health
Organization's recommendations. Several studies have shown an inverse
correlation between the regular consumption of these foods
and the emergence of chronic diseases. Fruits and vegetables are an
excellent source of antioxidant and bioactive compounds, such as
phenolic and flavonoids compounds, and have a high content in dietar
y fibre, vitamins and minerals. The aim of this study was to determine
the total phenolic and flavonoids compounds in dif ferent types
of fruits and vegetables, as well as to per form a comparative analysis
of their contents. According to our results, it was found that the
content of these compounds depends on the type of vegetables and
fruits analyzed. Red fruits (blueberries, raspberries and strawberries)
were the fruits with the highest content of total phenolic and flavonoids
compounds and purple cabbage, ginger and beetroot were the
vegetables with the highest levels.

Gas chromatography: a useful tool for bakery products differentiation.
Bakery products (cookies, biscuits, cakes, crackers, bread and savoury snacks) are highly appreciated and frequently consumed by all age consumers, usually as part of breakfast, mid-morning and afternoon snacks. The main ingredients of bakery products are: wheat flour, sugar, fat, water and salt. With respect to fat, besides the total amount, it is very important to evaluate its quality, namely the fatty acid profile. One of the most suitable techniques to evaluate the fatty acids composition of a food is gas chromatography coupled to flame ionization detection. The aim of this study was to evaluate if gas chromatography is a useful tool for bakery products differentiation, with respect to their fatty acids profile and impact on human nutrition. Therefore, 30 bakery products from six categories (“Maria” cookies, plain salty cookies, coated chocolate cookies, brioche filled with chocolate, brioche without filling and with chocolate chips, and French croissants) and from different brands, were acquired in supermarkets from Lisbon region. Total fat content was determined by acid hydrolysis and Soxhlet extraction with petroleum ether. Fatty acids methyl esters were obtained by cold transesterification and analysed by gas chromatography with flame ionization detection. Most of the analysed foods (83%) have a higher content of saturated than monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. For all the studied categories considerable differences were observed in the fatty acid profile, except for brioche with chocolate chips. In “Maria” cookies, plain salty cookies and coated chocolate cookies, at least one sample had as major fatty acids the monounsaturated instead of saturated. In the brioche filled with chocolate category, for two of the analysed samples the major fatty acids were saturated, while for the other sample predominated the polyunsaturated fatty acids. In conclusion, gas chromatography is a useful technique to differentiate the nutritional quality of bakery products, as well as to estimate the potential impact of these foods on public health. Furthermore, it was possible to conclude that food industry should address new strategies to reformulate their products. According to the obtained results, it is possible to produce similar foods with healthier nutritional features.National Institute of Health Dr. Ricardo Jorge, for financial support to Project “PTranSALT” (2012DAN828).
Metal-insulator transition at B=0 in an ultra-low density () two dimensional GaAs/AlGaAs hole gas
We have observed a metal-insulator transition in an ultra-low density two
dimensional hole gas formed in a high quality GaAs-AlGaAs heterostructure at
B=0. At the highest carrier density studied () the hole gas is strongly metallic, with an exceptional mobility of
. The low disorder and strength of the many-body
interactions in this sample are highlighted by the observation of re-entrant
metal insulator transitions in both the fractional () and integer
() quantum Hall regimes. On reducing the carrier density the
temperature and electric field dependence of the resistivity show that the
sample is still metallic at (), becoming
insulating at . Our results indicate that
electron-electron interactions are dominant at these low densities, pointing to
the many body origins of this metal-insulator transition. We note that the
value of at the transition () is large enough to allow
the formation of a weakly pinned Wigner crystal, and is approaching the value
calculated for the condensation of a pure Wigner crystal.Comment: 4 pages, latex, 4 postscript figures, submitted to EP2DS-12 on 21st

Family resemblances in action: an introduction to religio-political activism in Southern Africa
The introduction to this special issue argues that in many countries in southern Africa a new phase in the entanglement between the religious and the political has set in. Increasingly, activists in political fields are borrowing from religious registers of discourse and practice, while conversely, activists in the religious domain are adopting discourses and practices originating in the political domain. We suggest that this religiopolitical activism is simultaneously the product of a climate of profound social change and an important transformative force within it. In order to do justice to the complex dynamics of southern African religiopolitical activism in its manifold manifestations, we draw on the concept of ‘family resemblances’. This allows us to examine how the boundaries between religious and political registers are made the object of situated social negotiations. The family resemblances explored in this special issue range from religiopolitical activists’ habitus and their communication strategies via religious leaders’ self-positionings in relation to the political, to the creation of specific religiopolitical spaces.ASC – Publicaties niet-programma gebonde
CMBR Weak Lensing and HI 21-cm Cross-correlation Angular Power Spectrum
Weak gravitational lensing of the CMBR manifests as a secondary anisotropy in
the temperature maps. The effect, quantified through the shear and convergence
fields imprint the underlying large scale structure (LSS), geometry and
evolution history of the Universe. It is hence perceived to be an important
observational probe of cosmology. De-lensing the CMBR temperature maps is also
crucial for detecting the gravitational wave generated B-modes. Future
observations of redshifted 21-cm radiation from the cosmological neutral
hydrogen (HI) distribution hold the potential of probing the LSS over a large
redshift range. We have investigated the correlation between post-reionization
HI signal and weak lensing convergence field. Assuming that the HI follows the
dark matter distribution, the cross-correlation angular power spectrum at a
multipole \ell is found to be proportional to the cold dark matter power
spectrum evaluated at \ell/r, where r denotes the comoving distance to the
redshift where the HI is located. The amplitude of the ross-correlation depends
on quantities specific to the HI distribution, growth of perturbations and also
the underlying cosmological model. In an ideal ituation, we found that a
statistically significant detection of the cross-correlation signal is
possible. If detected, the cross-correlation signal hold the possibility of a
joint estimation of cosmological parameters and also test various CMBR
de-lensing estimators.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, publishe
