    Metabolism And The Rise Of Fungus Cultivation By Ants

    Most ant colonies are comprised of workers that cooperate to harvest resources and feed developing larvae. Around 50 million years ago (MYA), ants of the attine lineage adopted an alternative strategy, harvesting resources used as compost to produce fungal gardens. While fungus cultivation is considered a major breakthrough in ant evolution, the associated ecological consequences remain poorly understood. Here, we compare the energetics of attine colony-farms and ancestral hunter-gatherer colonies using metabolic scaling principles within a phylogenetic context. We find two major energetic transitions. First, the earliest lower-attine farmers transitioned to lower mass-specific metabolic rates while shifting significant fractions of biomass from ant tissue to fungus gardens. Second, a transition 20 MYA to specialized cultivars in the higher-attine clade was associated with increased colony metabolism (without changes in garden fungal content) and with metabolic scaling nearly identical to hypometry observed in hunter-gatherer ants, although only the hunter-gatherer slope was distinguishable from isometry. Based on these evolutionary transitions, we propose that shifting living-tissue storage from ants to fungal mutualists provided energetic storage advantages contributing to attine diversification and outline critical assumptions that, when tested, will help link metabolism, farming efficiency, and colony fitness.Integrative Biolog

    Automatic recognition of gait patterns in human motor disorders using machine learning: A review

    Background: automatic recognition of human movement is an effective strategy to assess abnormal gait patterns. Machine learning approaches are mainly applied due to their ability to work with multidimensional nonlinear features. Purpose: to compare several machine learning algorithms employed for gait pattern recognition in motor disorders using discriminant features extracted from gait dynamics. Additionally, this work highlights procedures that improve gait recognition performance. Methods: we conducted an electronic literature search on Web of Science, IEEE, and Scopus, using “human recognition”, “gait patterns’’, and “feature selection methods” as relevant keywords. Results: analysis of the literature showed that kernel principal component analysis and genetic algorithms are efficient at reducing dimensional features due to their ability to process nonlinear data and converge to global optimum. Comparative analysis of machine learning performance showed that support vector machines (SVMs) exhibited higher accuracy and proper generalization for new instances. Conclusions: automatic recognition by combining dimensional data reduction, cross-validation and normalization techniques with SVMs may offer an objective and rapid tool for investigating the subject's clinical status.     A Search for Old Star Clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud

    We report the first results of a color-magnitude diagram survey of 25 candidate old LMC clusters. For almost all of the sample, it was possible to reach the turnoff region, and in many clusters we have several magnitudes of the main sequence. Age estimates based on the magnitude difference δT1\delta T_1 between the giant branch clump and the turnoff revealed that no new old clusters were found. The candidates turned out to be of intermediate age (1-3 Gyr) We show that the apparently old ages as inferred from integrated UBV colors can be explained by a combination of stochastic effects produced by bright stars and by photometric errors for faint clusters lying in crowded fields. The relatively metal poor candidates from the CaII triplet spectroscopy also turned out to be of intermediate age. This, combined with the fact that they lie far out in the disk, yields interesting constraints regarding the formation and evolution of the LMC disk. We also study the age distribution of intermediate age and old clusters This homogeneous set of accurate relative ages allows us to make an improved study of the history of cluster formation/destruction for ages >1>1Gyr. We confirm previous indications that there was apparently no cluster formation in the LMC during the period from 3-8 Gyr ago, and that there was a pronounced epoch of cluster formation beginning 3 Gyrs ago that peaked at about 1.5 Gyrs ago.     Cubature formulae for the gaussian weight. Some old and new rules.

    In this paper we review some of the main known facts about cubature rules to approximate integrals over domains in R-n, in particular with respect to the Gaussian weight w(x) = e(-xTx); where x = (x(1); ... ; x(n)) is an element of R-n. Some new rules are also presented. Taking into account the well-known issue of the "curse of dimensionality", our aim is at providing rules with a certain degree of algebraic precision and a reasonably small number of nodes as well as an acceptable stability. We think that the methods used to construct these new rules are of further applicability in the field of cubature formulas. The efficiency of new and old rules are compared by means of several numerical experiments

    Alkane-grown Beauveria bassiana produce mycelial pellets displaying peroxisome proliferation, oxidative stress, and cell surface alterations

    The entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana is able to grow on insect cuticle18 hydrocarbons as the sole carbon source, inducing several enzymes involved in alkane19 assimilation and concomitantly increasing virulence against insect hosts. In this study, we20 describe some physiological and molecular processes implicated in growth, nutritional21 stress response, and cellular alterations found in alkane-grown fungi. The fungal cytology22 was investigated using light and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) while the surface23 topography was examined using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Fungal hydrophobicity24 was also measured on the cell surface. Additionally, the expression pattern of several genes25 associated with oxidative stress, peroxisome biogenesis, and hydrophobicity were analysed26 by qPCR. We found a novel type of growth in alkane-cultured B. bassiana similar to27 mycelial pellets described in other alkane-free fungi, which were able to germinate and28 produce viable conidia in media without a carbon source and to be pathogenic against29 larvae of the beetles Tenebrio molitor and Tribolium castaneum. Optical microscopy and30 TEM showed that pellets were formed by hyphae cumulates with high peroxidase activity,31 exhibiting peroxisome proliferation and an apparent surface thickening. Alkane-grown32 conidia appeared to be more hydrophobic and cell surfaces displayed different topography33 than glucose-grown cells, as it was observed by AFM. We also found a significant34 induction in several genes encoding for peroxins, catalases, superoxide dismutases, and35 hydrophobins. These results show that both morphological and metabolic changes are36 triggered in mycelial pellets derived from alkane-grown B. bassiana.Fil: Huarte Bonnet, Carla.     Significance of interactions between microplastics and POPs in the marine environment: a critical overview

    The presence of plastic debris in the ocean is increasing and several effects in the marine environment have been reported. A great number of studies have demonstrated that microplastics (MPs) adsorb organic compounds concentrating them several orders of magnitude than the levels found in their surrounding environment, therefore they could be potential vectors of these contaminants to biota. However, a consensus on MPs as vectors of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) has not been reached since are opposing views among different researchers on this topic. However, all agree that more extensive studies are needed to clarify this relationship. This review reunites information reporting the factors that drive the sorption dynamics between MPs and POPs, which essentially corresponds to polymer properties and surrounding environmental variables. Furthermore, this review highlights several supporting and rebuttal arguments in the direction to clear up the real hazard enforced by the presence of MPs in marine environments.publishe

    Influence of the robotic exoskeleton Lokomat on the control of human gait : an electromyographic and kinematic analysis

    Nowadays there is an increasing percentage of elderly people and it is expected that this percentage will continue increasing, carrying huge organizational costs in rehabilitation services. Recent robotic devices for gait training are more and more regarded as alternatives to solve cost-efficiency issues and provide novel approaches for training. Nevertheless, there is a need to address how to target muscular activation and kinematic patterns for optimal recovery after a neurological damage. The main objective of this work was to understand the underlying principles that the human nervous system employs to synchronize muscular activity during walking assisted by Lokomat. A basic low-dimensional locomotor program can explain the synergistic activation of muscles during assisted gait. As a main contribution, we generated a detailed description of the electro myographic and biomechanical response to variations in robotic assistance in intact humans, which can be used for future control strategies to be implemented in motor rehabilitation

    Adaptive real-time tool for human gait event detection using a wearable gyroscope

    The development of robust algorithms for human gait analysis are essential to evaluate the gait performance, and in many cases, crucial for diagnosing gait pathologies. This work proposes a new adaptive tool for human gait event detection in real-time, based on the angular velocity recorded from one gyroscope placed on the instep of the foot and in a finite state machine with adaptive decision rules. The signal was segmented to detect 6 events: Heel Strike (HS), Foot Flat (FF), Middle Mid-Stance (MMST), Heel-Off (HO), Toe-Off (TO), and Middle Mid-Swing (MMSW). The tool was validated with healthy subjects in ground-level walking using a treadmill, for different speeds (1.5 to 4.5 km/h) and slopes (0 to 10%). The results show that the tool is highly accurate and versatile for the detection of all events, as indicated by the values of accuracy, average delays and advances (HS: 99.96%,-7.95 ms, and 9.85 ms; FF: 99.48%,-4.95 ms, and 9.35 ms; MMST: 98.26%, 36.54 ms, and 16.38 ms; HO: 98.87%,-22.71 ms, and 18.62 ms; TO: 95.95%,-6.80 ms, 14.38 ms; MMSW: 96.06%,-3.45 ms; 0.15 ms, respectively).
