    Chemical abundances for the transiting planet host stars OGLE-TR-10, 56, 111, 113, 132 and TrES-1. Abundances in different galactic populations

    We used the UVES spectrograph (VLT-UT2 telescope) to obtain high-resolution spectra of 6 stars hosting transiting planets, namely for OGLE-TR-10, 56, 111, 113, 132 and TrES-1. The spectra are now used to derive and discuss the chemical abundances for C, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, S, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn. Abundances were derived in LTE, using 1-D plane-parallel Kurucz model atmospheres. For S, Zn and Cu we used a spectral synthesis procedure, while for the remaining cases the abundances were derived from measurements of line-equivalent widths. The resulting abundances are compared with those found for stars in the solar neighborhood. Distances and galactic coordinates are estimated for the stars. We conclude that besides being particularly metal-rich, with small possible exceptions OGLE-TR-10, 56, 111, 113, 132 and TrES-1 are chemically undistinguishable from the field (thin disk) stars regarding their [X/Fe] abundances. This is particularly relevant for the most distant of the targets, located at up to ~2 Kpc from the Sun. We also did not find any correlation between the abundances and the condensation temperature of the elements, an evidence that strong accretion of planetary-like material, tentatively connected to planetary migration, did not occur.Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (June 2006

    [Resumo] Este estudo procurou clarificar alguns problemas ou perturbações que as crianças surdas podem apresentar ao nível do funcionamento de alguns dos componentes da memória operatória (Baddeley e Hitch, 1974), bem como da atenção. Para avaliação da memória das crianças foram criadas provas informatizadas de memória para palavras, para números e para figuras. Para além disso foram também desenvolvidas duas provas de atenção: uma de atenção concentrada e outra de atenção distribuída. Os resultados serao analisados tendo em conta o grau de surdez das crianças e da escolaridade que possuem no momento de realização das provas

    Carbon Nitrogen, and Oxygen Galactic Gradients: A Solution to the Carbon Enrichment Problem

    Eleven models of Galactic chemical evolution, differing in the carbon, nitrogen,and oxygen yields adopted, have been computed to reproduce the Galactic O/H values obtained from H II regions. All the models fit the oxygen gradient, but only two models fit also the carbon gradient, those based on carbon yields that increase with metallicity due to stellar winds in massive stars (MS) and decrease with metallicity due to stellar winds in low and intermediate mass stars (LIMS). The successful models also fit the C/O versus O/H evolution history of the solar vicinity obtained from stellar observations. We also compare the present day N/H gradient and the N/O versus O/H and the C/Fe, N/Fe, O/Fe versus Fe/H evolution histories of the solar vicinity predicted by our two best models with those derived from H II regions and from stellar observations. While our two best models fit the C/H and O/H gradients as well as the C/O versus O/H history, only Model 1 fits well the N/H gradient and the N/O values for metal poor stars but fails to fit the N/H values for metal rich stars. Therefore we conclude that our two best models solve the C enrichment problem, but that further work needs to be done on the N enrichment problem. By adding the C and O production since the Sun was formed predicted by Models 1 and 2 to the observed solar values we find an excellent agreement with the O/H and C/H values of the solar vicinity derived from H II regions O and C recombination lines. One of the most important results of this paper is that the fraction of carbon due to MS and LIMS in the interstellar medium is strongly dependent on time and on the galactocentric distance; at present about half of the carbon in the interstellar medium of the solar vicinity has been produced by MS and half by LIMS.Comment: 34 pages, 6 tables, 7 figures.     Impact of surface topography on the bacterial attachment to micro- and nano-patterned polymer films

    The development of antimicrobial surfaces has become a high priority in recent times. There are two ongoing worldwide health crises: the COVID-19 pandemic provoked by the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the antibiotic-resistant diseases provoked by bacteria resistant to antibiotic-based treatments. The need for antimicrobial surfaces against bacteria and virus is a common factor to both crises. Most extended strategies to prevent bacterial associated infections rely on chemical based-approaches based on surface coatings or biocide encapsulated agents that release chemical agents. A critical limitation of these chemistry-based strategies is their limited effectiveness in time while grows the concerns about the long-term toxicity on human beings and environment pollution. An alternative strategy to prevent bacterial attachment consists in the introduction of physical modification to the surface. Pursuing this chemistry-independent strategy, we present a fabrication process of surface topographies [one-level (micro, nano) and hierarchical (micro+nano) structures] in polypropylene (PP) substrates and discuss how wettability, topography and patterns size influence on its antibacterial properties. Using nanoimprint lithography as patterning technique, we report as best results 82 and 86% reduction in the bacterial attachment of E. coli and S. aureus for hierarchically patterned samples compared to unpatterned reference surfaces. Furthermore, we benchmark the mechanical properties of the patterned PP surfaces against commercially available antimicrobial films and provide evidence for the patterned PP films to be suitable candidates for use as antibacterial functional surfaces in a hospital environment.This work is funded by the European Commission, under the project FLEXPOL (H2020-NMBPPILOT-2016-721062).     Cytotoxic, antitumor and toxicological profile of Passiflora alata leaf extract

    Passiflora alata or passion fruit is a native flowering plant from Amazon, geographically spread from Peru to Brazil. The plant has long been used in folks medicine for its pharmacological properties and is included in the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia since 1929. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential cytotoxic and antitumor activities of Passiflora alata leaf extract (PaLE) in S180-tumor bearing mice. The percentage of cell proliferation inhibition (% CPI) and IC50 in relation to 4 tumor cell lines were determined in PC3, K-562, HepG2 and S180 cell lines using the MTT assay. PaLE showed a CPI > 75% and greater potency (IC50 < 30 µg/mL) against PC3 and S180 cell lines. PaLE showed antitumor activity in treatments intraperitoneally (36.75% and 44.99% at doses of 100 and 150 mg/kg/day, respectively). Toxicological changes were shown in the reduced body mass associated with reduced food consumption, increased spleen mass associated with histopathological increase in the white pulp of the spleen and increased number of total leukocytes with changes in the percentage relationship between lymphocytes and neutrophils.
