Using binaries containing giants to constrain theories of stellar and tidal evolution

Investigations of stellar and tidal evolution of binary stars with giant components are rare. In this paper, we will investigate such features in three binary systems for which at least one component is a giant star. As some of these giants seem to be in the blue loop, it is an excellent opportunity to investigate the sensitivity of core overshooting on their location in the HR Diagram. We expect that these characteristics shall serve as an incentive to observers to investigate such kinds of binaries, increasing the accuracy of measurements and the number of systems to test the evolutionary models. Methods. Prior to performing the study of the circularization and synchronization levels, an analysis of the capability of our stellar evolutionary models to reproduce the observed masses, radii and effective temperatures is carried out. Next, the differential equations of tidal evolution are integrated and the corresponding critical times are compared with the inferred age of the system and with the observed eccentricity and rotational velocities (when available). Results. We have found good agreement between our stellar models and the astrophysical properties of eta And, V2291 Oph and SZ Cen by adopting a moderate core overshooting amount (alpha(ov) = 0.20). Three mechanisms were used to try to explain the observed levels of circularization and synchronization: the hydrodynamical mechanism, turbulent dissipation and radiative damping. In the cases of eta And and SZ Cen, for which the rotational velocities are available, by assuming solid body rotation for both stars of each system we have found that the theoretical ratio between the rotational velocities V-rotA/V-rotB at the inferred ages are in good agreement with the observational ratios.The Spanish MEC (AYA2006-06375)Peer reviewe

We discuss the relations between some additional hypothesis that guarantee the global injectivity of F. Further, based on one of these hypotheses, we establish a necessary condition for the existence of F: R^n -> R^n such that det DF = h, where h: R^n -> [0,\infty) is a given C^\infty function

AVALIAÇÃO DA QUALIDADE NA EDUCAÇÃO SUPERIOR: AMPLIAR É PRECISO

Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar e discutir a configuração da qualidade na educação superior a partir da sua concepção e de mecanismos para avaliá-la, formulada por alguns renomados pesquisadores nacionais e internacionais. Trata-se de um estudo com características descritiva e de levantamento realizado sob a forma de pesquisa bibliográfica, enfatizando-se o período de 1980 a 2000. Evidencia-se a ausência de um constructo da qualidade para a educação superior que dê conta da complexidade que envolve. Nesse cenário, os mecanismos e instrumentos de avaliação da qualidade observados continuam a privilegiar apenas uma de suas facetas, em especial, a voltada para os aspectos quantitativos, sugerindo que a configuração da qualidade na educação superior se apresenta ainda de forma reducionista

ASPECTOS QUE ENVOLVEM O PROJETO POLÍTICO-PEDAGÓGICO DOS CURSOS DE GRADUAÇÃO NA EAD NO BRASIL

Este artigo visa discutir alguns aspectos estruturantes do projeto político-pedagógico dos cursos de graduação na modalidade a distância no Brasil, quais sejam: o foco disciplinar, as relações entre as disciplinas, a formação humanista e a liberdade acadêmica. Trata-se de um estudo descritivo-exploratório, realizado sob enfoque qualitativo, com uso da pesquisa bibliográfica para a coleta de dados e o método de análise de conteúdo para apresentar e discutir os resultados. Os quatro aspectos analisados se encontram permeados de alto teor subjetivo e mantêm ligações acentuadas entre si, o que dificulta apreendê-los na sua totalidade. A multidisciplinaridade é a relação que prevalece nos cursos de graduação na EaD no Brasil, sugerindo aguçado foco disciplinar, o que restringe a liberdade acadêmica e a formação humanista compatíveis às especificidades desta modalidade de ensino

"The Keynesian Roots of Stock-flow Consistent Macroeconomic Models: Peering Over the Edge of the Short Period"

This paper argues that institutionally rich stock-flow consistent models—that is, models in which economic agents are identified with the main social categories/institutional sectors of actual capitalist economies, the short period behavior of these agents is thoroughly described, and the "period by period" balance sheet dynamics implied by the latter is consistently modeled—are (1) perfectly compatible with John Maynard Keynes's theoretical views, (2) the ideal tool for rigorous post-Keynesian analyses of the medium run, and (3) therefore crucial to the consolidation of the broad post-Keynesian research program.

A CONFIGURAÇÃO DA QUALIDADE NA TUTORIA DO CURSO DE ADMINISTRAÇÃO NA MODALIDADE A DISTÂNCIA DA UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DE MATO GROSSO DO SUL

Este artigo objetiva configurar a qualidade da tutoria do curso de administração na modalidade a distância da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul. Trata-se de um estudo de caso com características descritiva, exploratória e de levantamento. O principal instrumento para a coleta de dados foi o questionário semi-estruturado e sua análise foi realizada por meio da estatística descritiva. A amostra utilizada foi do tipo intencional. Identificou-se seis categorias de análise para observar a qualidade da tutoria do referido curso: capacitação; tempo de dedicação; material didático; autonomia dos alunos; características da tutoria e satisfação com o trabalho. Verificou-se que a qualidade da tutoria do curso analisado encontra-se configurada pela responsabilidade, comprometimento e motivação dos tutores; pela ausênsia de formação pedagógica adequada por mais da metade de seus tutores e por algumas dificuldades técnicas no funcionamento do ambiente virtual

"Revisiting (and Connecting) Marglin-Bhaduri and Minsky--An SFC Look at Financialization and Profit-led Growth"

Many heterodox strands of thought share both a concern with the study of different phases or growth regimes in the history of capitalism and the use of formal short-run models as an analytical tool. This text suggests that (1) this strategy is potentially misleading; (2) that the stock-flow consistent (SFC) approach, while providing a general framework that may facilitate the dialogue among those currents, is particularly well suited to all those who think that macroeconomic models may illuminate historical quests; and (3) that the main intuitions may be conveyed through the "benchmark" Post Keynesian SFC model presented by Dos Santos and Zezza (2008), dispensing with the complex computer simulations that are normally employed by SFC authors.

A Pós-Graduação Lato Sensu em Administração no Brasil: um estudo de caso

Este artigo delineia as características dos cursos de pós-graduação lato sensu em administração realizados em Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, no período de 2002 a 2007. Trata-se de um extrato parcial de pesquisa, sob este mesmo tema, ora em desenvolvimento, com características descritivas, exploratórias e de levantamento. Constitui um estudo de caso, sob enfoque qualitativo, que utiliza a entrevista como principal instrumento para coleta de dados. Os sujeitos participantes do estudo são coordenadores e egressos dos referidos cursos. O método de analise de conteúdo foi adotado para interpretar as informações levantadas. Como resultados, observou-se que os cursos investigados não contemplam adequadamente o exercício da prática gerencial contemporânea, bem como registrou-se a ausência de alguns requisitos indicados pelo Conselho Nacional de Educação, como a presença de doutores e mestres para ministrar disciplinas e rigor na freqüência às aulas. A monografia constitui grave problema nesta modalidade de curso
