As it has been analyzed, the Spaniard Senate suffers a dysfunctional problem: on the one hand it’s established on the 69.1 CE the Senate is the territorial chamber of representatives and on the other one it’s established that it is a sober second thought chamber. At the same time it has been observed that the general elections have driven to symmetrical majorities between the House of Representatives and the Senate even when the electoral formulas are substantively different. This paper identifies the main reason on the constituency. Through electoral simulations it has been proved that the electoral formula and the simultaneity on time of the elections for the Spaniard Parliament (Cortes Generales) are less influential than the constituency. The scenarios proposed introduce the autonomic community as constituency and shows the psychological effects on the electorate changing the symmetrical majorities on most of the elections

This study examined the relationship between parenting styles and adolescents' psychosocial competence. Parents of 372 students between 11 and 15 years old were classified according to the student perception in four groups: pemissive, authoritative, authoritarian and neglectful. Several aspects related to the students' psychosocial competence were assessed through self-report measures. Results showed that both adolescents perceiving their parents as permissive and adolescents perceiving their parents as authoritative obtained the highest scores in perceived social competence and self-esteem. Moreover, their behavior in the classroom was more positive, and they were less rejected by their  classmates. These jindings are discussed in tems of the dimensions of acceptance and control underlying rhe various parenting styles.

Nearest transfer effects of working memory training: A comparison of two programs focused on working memory updating

    Get PDF
This study analyzed the mechanisms involved in possible transfer effects for two different working memory updating (WMU) training programs administered to young adults and based on two updating paradigms: n-back and arithmetical updating. The influence of practice distribution on transfer effects was also explored by including two training regimens: massed and spaced practice. Performance on different WMU tasks more or less structurally similar to the tasks used in the training was assessed to analyze the nearest transfer effects. Near and far transfer effects were tested using complex working memory (WM) and fluid intelligence tasks. The results showed that the WMU training produced gains in only some of the WMU tasks structurally similar to those used in the training, not in those lacking the same structure, or in WM or fluid intelligence tasks. These limited nearest transfer effects suggest that gains could be due to the acquisition of a specific strategy appropriate for the task during the training rather than to any improvement in the updating process per se. Performance did not differ depending on the training regimen

Child and adolescent development of the brain oscillatory activity during a working memory task

The developmental trajectories of brain oscillations during the encoding and maintenance phases of a Working Memory (WM) task were calculated. The Delayed-Match-to-Sample Test (DMTS) was applied to 239 subjects of 6-29 years, while EEG was recorded. The Event-Related Spectral Perturbation (ERSP) was obtained in the range between 1 and 25 Hz during the encoding and maintenance phases. Behavioral parameters of reaction times (RTs) and response accuracy were simultaneously recorded. The results indicate a myriad of transient and sustained bursts of oscillatory activity from low frequencies (1 Hz) to the beta range (up to 19 Hz). Beta and Low-frequency ERSP increases were prominent in the encoding phase in all age groups, while low-frequency ERSP indexed the maintenance phase only in children and adolescents, but not in late adolescents and young adults, suggesting an age-dependent neural mechanism of stimulus trace maintenance. While the latter group showed Beta and Alpha indices of anticipatory attention for the retrieval phase. Mediation analysis showed an important role of early Delta-Theta and late Alpha oscillations for mediation between age and behavioral responses per-formance. In conclusion, the results show a complex pattern of oscillatory bursts during the encoding and maintenance phases with a consistent pattern of developmental changes.

Abstract: Math anxiety has been found to be an emotional problem that has a negative effect on students' academic performance across different levels of education. This type of anxiety could be related to certain cognitive and emotional processes. A first objective was to examine the relationship between math anxiety and certain inhibitory abilities responsible of eliminating intrusive thoughts or preventing them access to consciousness. A second aim was to determine the extent in which math anxiety and students' self-perceptions of their own emotional abilities are related. To this end, 187 first-year undergraduate psychology students were administered different measures to assess math anxiety, statistics anxiety, inhibitory abilities, and perceived emotional intelligence. The results showed that students with high math anxiety were more likely to experience intrusive thoughts, were less effective at suppressing these thoughts, and reported lower scores in understanding and regulating their emotions. These cognitive mechanisms and emotional abilities are of relevance to better understand the nature of this type of anxiety
