    Morphology of Gambierdiscus excentricus (Dinophyceae) with emphasis on sulcal plates

    Gambierdiscus excentricus is an epibenthic dinoflagellate able to produce ciguatoxin and maitotoxin-like compounds that are responsible for ciguatera fish poisoning. Morphological descriptions and molecular characterization of two G. excentricus strains isolated from Brazil and maintained in culture were provided. The most complete description of the morphology of the sulcal region of Gambierdiscus based on light and scanning electron microscopy was presented. The sulcal area morphology and nomenclature used by different authors to name the sulcal plates in Gambierdiscus were reviewed. Two small sulcal plates (S.m.a. and S.m.p.) were shown for the first time. Phylogenetic trees based on D1–D3 and D8–D10 large subunits of ribosomal RNA gene sequences showed that the strains of G. excentricus from Brazil clustered with strains of G. excentricus isolated from its type locality, the Canary Islands. Both phylogenetic trees reconstructed the same relationships among all the formally described Gambierdiscus species and Gambierdiscus sp. ribotype 2 and Gambierdiscus sp. type 2.Versión del editor2,080

    Synthesis and biological evaluation as microtubule-active agents of several tetrahydrofuran and spiroacetal derivatives

    The stereoselective preparation of several molecules containing structural fragments of the tetrahydrofuran and spiroacetal type is described. Their degree of cytotoxicity and their interactions with tubulin have been investigated. It has been confirmed that the tetrahydrofuran derivatives are cytotoxic but, in contrast to previous reports, it has been found that the cytoxicity is not due to interactions with the microtubule network.     Exploring social-ecological systems in the transition from war to peace: a scenario-based approach to forecasting the post-conflict landscape in a Colombian region

    This paper describes the relationship between the landscape and the socio-economic and political characteristics of a highly biodiverse Andean region of Colombia, which is now recovering from the socio-ecological impact of protracted armed conflict. We quantify the current spatial relationship between nature and society, and we include legacy effects from the most recent period of armed conflict and its consequences of forced displacement and land use disruption. The procedure followed provides a quantitative model where a minimum number of socio-economic and political variables explain the variation in land cover. The results represent the relationship between land use intensity and the main socio-economic and political indicators, highlighting a close interaction between landscape configuration, socio-economic structure of local populations, coercive conservation and armed conflict. A simulated post-conflict landscape shows a clear transition gradient towards agrarian expansion and intensification, also in systemswhere naturalness is a relevant feature. The peace process in Colombia offers opportunities for new schemes of land planning and management, including natural resource governance and policy reforms to improve welfare and resilience of local communities. The results allow to define options for future planning given the possible consequences of socio-political legacy effects yet to fully play out across Colombia

    The Changing Amazon Hydrological Cycle—Inferences From Over 200 Years of Tree‐Ring Oxygen Isotope Data

    Changes to the Amazon hydrological cycle have important consequences for world's largest tropical forest, and the biodiversity it contains. However, a scarcity of long-term climate data in the region makes it hard to contextualize recent observed changes in Amazon hydrology. Here, we explore to what extent tree-ring oxygen isotope (δ18OTR) chronologies can inform us about hydrological changes in the Amazon over the past two centuries. Two δ18OTR records from northern Bolivia and the Ecuadorian Andes are presented. The Ecuador record spans 1799–2012 (n = 16 trees) and the Bolivia record spans 1860–2014 (n = 32 trees), making them the longest δ18OTR records from the Amazon, and among the most highly-replicated δ18OTR records from the tropics to date. The two chronologies correlate well at interannual and decadal timescales, despite coming from sites more than 1,500 km apart. Both δ18OTR records are strongly related to interannual variation in Amazon River discharge measured at Óbidos, and accumulated upwind precipitation, suggesting a common climatic driver. In both records a strong increase in δ18OTR was observed up until approximately 1950, consistent with positive trends in the few other existing δ18O proxy records from across the Amazon. Considering all possible drivers of this long-term increase, a reduction in rainout fraction over the basin driven by rising sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic is suggested as the most likely cause. The upward trend in δ18OTR reverses over the past 1–2 decades, consistent with the observed strengthening of the Amazon hydrological cycle since approximately 1990

    Properties and DEFC tests of Nafion Functionalized titanate nanotubes composite membranes prepared by melt extrusion

    Nafion based composites are promising materials to improve the performance of direct ethanol fuel cells. In this work, composite membranes of Nafion and titanate nanotubes functionalized with sulfonic acid groups were prepared by melt extrusion and tested in a direct ethanol fuel cell. Far and mid infrared spectroscopies evidenced the formation of ionic bridges between the sulfonic acid groups of both functionalized nanoparticles and the ionomer. Small angle X ray scattering measurements revealed that the melt extrusion method leads to an uniform distribution of the inorganic phase in the ionomer matrix. Such structural analysis indicated that the improved the proton conduction properties of the composites, even with the addition of a high concentration of functionalized nanoparticles, are an outcome of the synergistic ionic network due to the hydrid organic inorganic proton conducting phases. However, an improvement of the fuel cell performance is observed for 2.5 wt of functionalized titanate nanotubes, which is a result of the lower ethanol crossover and the plasticizing effect of the aliphatic segments of the organic moieties grafted at the surface of the titanate nanoparticle

    Association between diet-quality scores, adiposity, total cholesterol and markers of nutritional status in European adults: findings from the Food4Me study

    Diet-quality scores (DQS), which are developed across the globe, are used to define adherence to specific eating patterns and have been associated with risk of coronary heart disease and type-II diabetes. We explored the association between five diet-quality scores (Healthy Eating Index, HEI; Alternate Healthy Eating Index, AHEI; MedDietScore, MDS; PREDIMED Mediterranean Diet Score, P-MDS; Dutch Healthy Diet-Index, DHDI) and markers of metabolic health (anthropometry, objective physical activity levels (PAL), and dried blood spot total cholesterol (TC), total carotenoids, and omega-3 index) in the Food4Me cohort, using regression analysis. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire. Participants (n = 1480) were adults recruited from seven European Union (EU) countries. Overall, women had higher HEI and AHEI than men (p < 0.05), and scores varied significantly between countries. For all DQS, higher scores were associated with lower body mass index, lower waist-to-height ratio and waist circumference, and higher total carotenoids and omega-3-index (p trends < 0.05). Higher HEI, AHEI, DHDI, and P-MDS scores were associated with increased daily PAL, moderate and vigorous activity, and reduced sedentary behaviour (p trend < 0.05). We observed no association between DQS and TC. To conclude, higher DQS, which reflect better dietary patterns, were associated with markers of better nutritional status and metabolic health

    Características químicas de um latossolo adubado com uréia e cloreto de potássio em ambiente protegido

    A produção de vegetais mais sadios e de boa qualidade e o fornecimento contínuo no mercado são fatores que têm determinado a adoção do sistema de cultivo protegido por um número maior de produtores. Porém, devido ao pouco conhecimento sobre o manejo do solo nessas condições, tem-se aplicado altas doses de fertilizantes, ocasionando problemas de salinidade e desequilíbrio nutricional. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da aplicação da uréia e do cloreto de potássio nas características químicas de um LATOSSOLO VERMELHO Destrófico, principalmente nos índices de acidez e saturação em potássio. O N e o K foram aplicados em cobertura, nas doses equivalentes de 13,3 e 39,9 g m-2 de N e 5,5 e 16,6 g m-2 de K, em esquema fatorial (2x2+1), com tratamento adicional, sem a aplicação dos nutrientes. Cultivou-se pimentão, cultivar Mayata, em condições de ambiente protegido, durante 34 semanas. Após o pegamento das mudas, foi aplicado 1/6 dos nutrientes a cada dez dias. Ao final do ciclo, as formas de N nítrico e N amoniacal representaram melhor as doses do nutriente aplicados ao solo e não houve acidificação. As raízes tiveram significativo crescimento após a aplicação de N, enquanto que o aumento da dose de K, aplicado como KCl, prejudicou o crescimento radicular, provavelmente associado à alta concentração de K no solo e possíveis efeitos salinos, correspondendo a mais de 5,0 mmol c dm-3 e mais que 5,3% de saturação do K no complexo de troca, na camada superficial do solo
