Renal Involvement in the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome: Presentation, Clinical Course, and Therapy

    Get PDF
Acute renal failure developing during the clinical course of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) has been related to complications of sepsis, nephrotoxic antibiotics, and recently to the development of glomerular lesions. Of 114 AIDS patients admitted to our hospital between January 1985 and June 1986. II patients (9.6%) developed acute renal failure. None of these II patients had a history of intravenous drug abuse or hypertension. All patients were male with an average age of 35 years old, 81% were black, and all were bisexual or homosexual. Renal failure was attributed to AIDS-related focal glomerulosclerosis (five cases), prerenal azotemia (one case), acute interstitial nephritis (one case), and acute tubular necrosis [four cases). Approximately 15 weeks elapsed from the onset of renal failure to end-stage kidney disease. Only one of five patients survived more than six months after beginning dialysis. Acute renal failure is an important complication of AIDS with glomerular involvement detected in 45% of patients. The long-range problems of initiating and maintaining dialysis therapy in these patients need to be addressed

Treatment of Uremic Diabetic Patients: Hemodialysis or Transplantation?

Eighty-one patients with chronic renal failure associated with or secondary to diabetic nephropathy were treated with dialysis and/or transplant. Twenty-five had juvenile diabetes and 56 had adult onset diabetes. Juvenile diabetics did poorly on hemodialysis with 13 patients having a 19% four-year survival rate, whereas those who had cadaveric transplantation did well with a four-year patient and graft survival rate of 56% in nine patients. The three juvenile diabetics who received related kidney grafts are presently alive with good function. Patients with adult onset diabetes did well on hemodialysis with a four-year survival rate of 63% in 45 patients. In this last group 11 patients received cadaveric transplants, but none survived 18 months

Synthesis and Luminescent Properties of Silicon Nanocrystals

Nowadays, study of silicon-based visible light-emitting devices has increased due to large-scale microelectronic integration. Since then different physical and chemical processes have been performed to convert bulk silicon (Si) into a light-emitting material. From discovery of Photoluminescence (PL) in porous Silicon by Canham, a new field of research was opened in optical properties of the Si nanocrystals (Si-NCs) embedded in a dielectric matrix, such as SRO (silicon-rich oxide) and SRN (silicon-rich nitride). In this respect, SRO films obtained by sputtering technique have proved to be an option for light-emitting capacitors (LECs). For the synthesis of SRO films, growth parameters should be considered; Si-excess, growth temperature and annealing temperature. Such parameters affect generation of radiative defects, distribution of Si-NCs and luminescent properties. In this chapter, we report synthesis, structural and luminescent properties of SRO monolayers and SRO/SiO2 multilayers (MLs) obtained by sputtering technique modifying Si-excess, thickness and thermal treatments

Effect of Acute Posttransplant Renal Failure on the Survival of Perfused Cadaver Kidneys

    Get PDF
Between 7973 and 7977 we encountered 22 cases of acute renal failure after transplantation in 70 patients who received perfused cadaver kidneys. Nearly two-thirds of 76 nonfunctioning grafts were lost due to subsequent superimposed rejection, often undetected and, hence, untreated. Thirty-one percent of the 76 recovered function. The recovery rate, we believe, can be improved by earlier diagnosis and treatment of rejection and by avoiding invasive diagnostic procedures in the early postoperative period. If the oliguric period extends beyond two weeks, a closed percutaneous renal biopsy is justified. The diagnosis of rejection and/or other abnormality as well as subsequent treatment are very important in these patients

EL Kojtspoo’kxë’n käjpxpo’kxï’n: ‘el descanso del habla’ en el mixe de Yacochi y Tamazulápam, Oaxaca

This paper analyzes two different greetings in the Mixe language spoken in Yacochi and Tamazulápam, in Oaxaca State. It is an initial approach to studying greetings from the perspective of Anthropological Linguistics, anchored in deixis and acting. The study used a general approach to parental theories in order to define what is called a “greeting” in Spanish. These two varieties of Mixe are reported to use kojts- poo’kxë’n and käjpxpo’kxï’n as a greeting (in Yacochi and Tamazulápam, respectively). These expressions are interpreted to mean “taking a break from speech.” Our database links what is expressed formally throu- gh a greeting with the extralinguistic conditions in which the greeting takes place. The paper sets forth that the greeting in these two varieties of the Mixe language is a discursive construction of gender that occurs in a multimodal context.

Length of Perfusion Time in Cadaver Kidney Transplantation

    No full text
The results of transplantation survival for 70 consecutive cadaver kidneys preserved under hypothermic pulsatile perfusion at Henry Ford Hospital are reviewed. Pulsatile perfusion for up to 30 hours did not adversely alter the survival rate following transplantation. Thus, kidneys perfused for prolonged periods of time (\u3e 20 hours) can be used for transplantation, if the basic rules for organ retrieval and preservation have been followed. Hypothermic pulsatile perfusion of cadaver kidneys has been demonstrated to be an adequate system for ex-vivo preservation for transplantation
