    Analytical study of the incidence of papillary carcinoma in thyroiditis cases and assessing the risk

    Background: The association between thyroid carcinoma and thyroiditis remains controversial in medical bibliography. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the incidence of papillary carcinoma in diagnosed cases of thyroiditis patients who underwent surgery and analyze the risk of carcinoma in thyroiditis patients.Methods: Patients of both sexes, age more than 13 with symptomatic thyroid swelling and diagnosed as any sub types of thyroiditis with FNAC/USG/Antibody titer in Government Medical College, Thrissur, India. 41females and 3 male patients were studied to assess risk of carcinoma in thyroiditis cases, analyzing the age, symptoms, clinical presentations and FNAC results.Results: 17 out of 44 cases showed post-operative biopsy as papillary carcinonoma.15 out of 17 papillary carcinoma cases diagnosed were above 36 years, with 6times increased risk, 95% CI = (1.142, 31.532). 10 out of 17 carcinoma cases have rapid increase in size (p=0.00). 82.4% of carcinoma cases have obstructive symptoms (p=0.00). FB sensation is more frequently seen in postoperative benign thyroiditis. 59% of the papillary carcinoma cases were diagnosed pre operatively as colloid with thyroiditis.Conclusions: Females aged more than 36years and all adult males with a rapid increase in size of the thyroid swelling and/or obstructive symptoms like dyspnoea/dysphagia, who’s FNAC suggestive of colloid with features of thyroiditis have a high malignant potential for papillary carcinoma, and total/near total thyroidectomy may be considered as an appropriate operative treatment

    Beta Decay Studies of Nuclides in the Heavy Region

    In the present work we studied the β-decay of various isotopes in the heavy region using the empirical formula of Fiset and Nix. It is found from the half-life that as the neutron number increases the possibility of β-decay increases. From the dependence of beta decay half-life on neutron number of parent and Q-value, we modified empirical formula of Fiset and Nix for beta decay half-life. We also developed an empirical formula for the Z-value of most stable isobar against β-decay. From the study of mass parabola for different isobars with mass number ranging from 200-223 it was found that the lowest point in the parabola, which is the Z-value of most stable isobar against β-decay, matches well with our formula predictions

    Semi Empirical Formula For Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay

    A Semi empirical formula for both phase space factor and Nuclear Matrix Element (NME) is developed for neutrinoless double beta decay, and the formula is used to compute the neutrinoless double beta decay half lives. Thecomputed half lives for neutrinoless double beta decay are compared with the corresponding experimental values and with those predicted by QRPA model. The semi empirical formula predictions are found to be in good agreement with experimental data. The semi empirical formula is used to predict neutrinoless double beta decay of various isotopes Ca, Ge, Se, Zr, Mo, Pd, Cd, Sn, Te, Xe, Nd and Sm that exhibiting single beta decay. As our semi empirical formula predictions agree with the experimental data we hope that the present work will be useful for the future experiments

    Low-Temperature Permittivity of Insulating Perovskite Manganites

    Measurements of the low-frequency (f<=100 kHz) permittivity and conductivity at T<= 150 K are reported for La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO(3) (0<=x<=1) and Ca(1-y)Sr(y)MnO(3) (0<=y<=0.75) having antiferromagnetic, insulating ground states covering a broad range of Mn valencies from Mn(3+) to Mn(4+). Static dielectric constants are determined from the low-T limiting behavior. With increasing T, relaxation peaks associated with charge-carrier hopping are observed in the real part of the permittivities and analyzed to determine dopant binding energies. The data are consistent with a simple model of hydrogenic impurity levels and imply effective masses m*/m_e~3 for the Mn(4+) compounds. Particularly interesting is a large dielectric constant (~100) associated with the C-type antiferromagnetic state near the composition La(0.2)Ca(0.8)MnO(3).Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, PRB in pres

To minimize the power of RISC Core, clock gating technique is used in the architectural level which is an efficient low power technique. 7-SEG LEDs are connected to the RISC IO interface for testing purpose, Verilog code is simulated using Modelsim and then implementation is done using FPGA board

    Spiny Lobsters and Potential of Sea Cage Culture Spiny Lobster Resources in India

    Fishery science and technology contributes a vital role in the augmentation of fish production globally.Among the seafood items, spiny lobsters have a prime position in terms of high unit value, demand, nutritional qualities with less perishable nature. Lobsters have great demand in international and domestic market, especially from tourism based beach resorts and restaurants as a luxury food. The annual lobster landings in India has been declining from a peak of 4,075 t in 1985 to the present annual average of 1,546 t. On an average, the fishery is contributed by Gujarat (43.7%), Maharashtra (25.4%), Tamil Nadu(14.6%) and Kerala (13%) (CMFRI Annual Report 2000-2015). Lobster fishing in India is mostly carried out by region specific traditional fishermen communities inhabiting along the coastal belts of different maritime states. Over the years the lobster fishery in India witnessed changes in fishing pattern, utility pattern with the introduction of live export market , sea cage culture and increased consumption and demand from tourism sector . Live Lobsters have a prominent place in the sea food export market both in terms of demand and price from Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Europe and USA. India witnessed a sea change in foreign exchange earnings through marine products export worth 46,975 million rupees during 1997-98 and 55,111.12 million rupees during 2014-15, from an initial value of 25 million rupees in 1950-51 (Sakthivel, 1999). The marine products export accounted and contributed 3.5 % of the total exports in 1990s. Our marine product exports in the initial stages were in dried and canned form. It has gradually progressed into frozen h 340 million rupees in 1996-97 (Sakthivel, 1999). Spiny lobsters formed one of the items in the live fish export along with mud crabs and reef fishes. The annual average revenue earnings by India through the export of lobsters is amounted to Rs.74 crores

    Hesperidin Ameliorates Immobilization-Stress-Induced Behavioral and Biochemical Alterations and Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Mice by Modulating Nitrergic Pathway

    The present study was aimed to evaluate the protective effect of hesperidin against immobilization-stress-induced alterations in biochemical, behavioral, and mitochondrial functions in mice. In many instances neuroscientists have reported that acute immobilization stress for 6 h resulted in anxiety and impaired locomotor activity due to excess oxidative-nitrergic stress, depletion of antioxidant defense mechanisms, and mitochondrial dysfunction in animals. In the present study, 6 h of acute immobilization stress had significantly altered the behavioral (anxiety and memory) and biochemical parameters coupled with mitochondrial dysfunction in Swiss albino mice. Fourteen days of pretreatment with Hesperidin (50 and 100 mg/kg, p.o.) significantly and dose-dependently inhibited the behavioral and biochemical alterations and mitochondrial dysfunction caused by acute immobilization stress. Furthermore, pre-treatment of l-arginine (50 mg/kg, i.p.), a nitric oxide precursor, reversed the protective effect of Hesperidin (50 and 100 mg/kg) (P < 0.05). In contrast, pretreatment of l-NAME (5 mg/kg, i.p.), a nitric oxide synthase inhibitor, potentiated the protective effect of Hesperidin (P < 0.05). These results suggest the possible involvement of nitrergic pathway in the protective effect Hesperidin against immobilization-stress-induced behavioral, biochemical, and mitochondrial dysfunction in mice

    Physical health impairment, disability and suicidal intent among self-harm survivors in South India

There are limited data examining the relationship between health impairment, disability and severity of suicidal intent. The aim of the study was to examine the associations of health impairment and disability with severity of suicidal intent among survivors following an act of self-harm. Methods: A pilot exploratory study of 453 self-harm survivors from a specialist hospital in South India. Sociodemographics, physical health impairment, disability (WHO Disability Schedule-II), suicidal intent, (Pierce suicide intent scale) and mental disorders were studied. Results: Arthritis was the most common physical impairment among self-harm survivors followed by gastrointestinal, sensory impairment and difficulty with mobilization. Nearly 10% of participants had some degree of functional impairment, with 38% experiencing severe physical pain in the week prior to self-harm. Past history of depression treatment, age, education and occupation influenced positively PSIS scores. There were significant associations between suicidal intent and disability. Conclusions: Indian self-harm survivors indicated complex relationships between physical health, disability and suicidal intent. Understanding these associations may help to develop suicide prevention strategies. Our findings suggest a need for integrating a comprehensive of physical health assessment in self harm survivors
