    The hybrid contents of memory

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a novel account of the contents of memory. By drawing on insights from the philosophy of perception, I propose a hybrid account of the contents of memory designed to preserve important aspects of representationalist and relationalist views. The hybrid view I propose also contributes to two ongoing debates in philosophy of memory. First, I argue that, in opposition to eternalist views, the hybrid view offers a less metaphysically-charged solution to the co-temporality problem. Second, I show how the hybrid view conceives of the relationship between episodic memory and other forms of episodic thinking. I conclude by considering some disanalogies between perception and memory and by replying to objections. I argue that, despite there being important differences between memory and perception, those differences do not harm my project

Unsuccessful remembering: A challenge for the relational view of memory

    Get PDF
This paper explores the relationship between a prominent version of the relational view of memory and recent work on forms of unsuccessful remembering or memory errors. I argue that unsuccessful remembering poses an important challenge for the relational view. Unsuccessful remembering can be divided into two kinds: misremembering and confabulating. I discuss each of these cases in light of a recent relational account, according to which remembering is characterized by an experiential relation to past events, and I argue that experiential relations do not adequately distinguish between successful and unsuccessful remembering. This is because there are, on the one hand, cases of remembering that do not instantiate the relevant experiential relations, and, on the other hand, cases of confabulation and misremembering that do instantiate the relevant experiential relations. I conclude by suggesting that any successful relationalist attempt to explain remembering needs to come to grips with unsuccessful remembering

Memory without content? Radical enactivism and (post)causal theories of memory

Radical enactivism, an increasingly influential approach to cognition in general, has recently been applied to memory in particular, with Hutto and Peeters New directions in the philosophy of memory, Routledge, New York, 2018) providing the first systematic discussion of the implications of the approach for mainstream philosophical theories of memory. Hutto and Peeters argue that radical enactivism, which entails a conception of memory traces as contentless, is fundamentally at odds with current causal and postcausal theories, which remain committed to a conception of traces as contentful: on their view, if radical enactivism is right, then the relevant theories are wrong. Partisans of the theories in question might respond to Hutto and Peeters’ argument in two ways. First, they might challenge radical enactivism itself. Second, they might challenge the conditional claim that, if radical enactivism is right, then their theories are wrong. In this paper, we develop the latter response, arguing that, appearances to the contrary notwithstanding, radical enactivism in fact aligns neatly with an emerging tendency in the philosophy of memory: radical enactivists and causal and postcausal theorists of memory have begun to converge, for distinct but compatible reasons, on a contentless conception of memory traces

Thinking About Events: A Pragmatist Account of the Objects of Episodic Hypothetical Thought

The debate over the objects of episodic memory has for some time been stalled, with few alternatives to familiar forms of direct and indirect realism being advanced. This paper moves the debate forward by building on insights from the recent psychological literature on memory as a form of episodic hypothetical thought (or mental time travel) and the recent philosophical literature on relationalist and representationalist approaches to perception. The former suggests that an adequate account of the objects of episodic memory will have to be a special case of an account of the objects of episodic hypothetical thought more generally. The latter suggests that an adequate account of the objects of episodic hypothetical thought will have to combine features of direct realism and representationalism. We develop a novel pragmatist-inspired account of the objects of episodic hypothetical thought that has the requisite features

A discussion on particle number and quantum indistinguishability

The concept of individuality in quantum mechanics shows radical differences from the concept of individuality in classical physics, as E. Schroedinger pointed out in the early steps of the theory. Regarding this fact, some authors suggested that quantum mechanics does not possess its own language, and therefore, quantum indistinguishability is not incorporated in the theory from the beginning. Nevertheless, it is possible to represent the idea of quantum indistinguishability with a first order language using quasiset theory (Q). In this work, we show that Q cannot capture one of the most important features of quantum non individuality, which is the fact that there are quantum systems for which particle number is not well defined. An axiomatic variant of Q, in which quasicardinal is not a primitive concept (for a kind of quasisets called finite quasisets), is also given. This result encourages the searching of theories in which the quasicardinal, being a secondary concept, stands undefined for some quasisets, besides showing explicitly that in a set theory about collections of truly indistinguishable entities, the quasicardinal needs not necessarily be a primitive concept.Comment: 46 pages, no figures. ADJUSTMENT OF A REGIONAL ALTIMETRIC NETWORK, IN BRAZIL, TO ESTIMATE NORMAL HEIGHTS AND GEOPOTENTIAL NUMBERS

In 2018, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) defined the normal height values and geopotential numbers for the High Precision Altimetric Network (HPAN), creating the need for developing procedures able to adapt works correlated with the Brazilian Geodetic System (BGS). In that context, and considering the state and municipal altimetric networks, it is necessary to estimate normal heights. To this end, this paper proposes to estimate normal height values and geopotential numbers for the Altimetric Network of the Federal District (AN-DF). Computational procedures involving the Least Squares Method were established and applied in a geometric levelling survey, which includes 200 stations distributed throughout the study area. The obtained results allowed estimating the normal heights of the network stations with accuracy up to 0.032m. However, because significant differences were found in the adjusted and known values of some used HPAN stations, we recommend a rigorous analysis of these stations before using them. In any case considering that the geometric levelling and the applied procedures were carried out correctly, it is suggested that the values estimated for all stations of the AN-DF in this work may be used

Direct computation of asymptotic states for ratcheting prevention in elastoplasticity

This thesis summarizes three contributions to improve design accounting elastoplasticity under cyclic loads. (i) The development of a direct method to compute the asymptotic steady-state solution in ideal elastoplasticity. Validation examples show that the method is fast and accurate. The performance ranges from one to two orders of magnitude higher than incremental analysis. (ii) The performance allowed the development of a direct strategy to identify the structural ratchet-limit. The procedure applies to periodical loads and has no limitations on the number of applied loads. (iii) The upgrade of the asymptotic solution method with nonlinear kinematic hardening, which is required to model the Baushinger effect and material ratcheting. To the author knowledge, this is the first direct method for steadystate solution with this capability. Comparison with step-by-step solutions shows a increase in performance of one order of magnitude, at least.

Petascale computations for Large-scale Atomic and Molecular collisions

Petaflop architectures are currently being utilized efficiently to perform large scale computations in Atomic, Molecular and Optical Collisions. We solve the Schroedinger or Dirac equation for the appropriate collision problem using the R-matrix or R-matrix with pseudo-states approach. We briefly outline the parallel methodology used and implemented for the current suite of Breit-Pauli and DARC codes. Various examples are shown of our theoretical results compared with those obtained from Synchrotron Radiation facilities and from Satellite observations. We also indicate future directions and implementation of the R-matrix codes on emerging GPU architectures.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, Chapter in: Workshop on Sustained Simulated Performance 2013, Published by Springer, 2014, edited by Michael Resch, Yevgeniya Kovalenko, Eric Focht, Wolfgang Bez and Hiroaki Kobaysah
