    Effects of child pick-up behavior on emergency evacuations

    The child pick-up behavior of parents during an emergency can cause heavy traffic congestion and failing to evacuate an affected area successfully. In this study, we analyzed the effect of child pick-up behavior using, as an example, a nuclear power plant accident caused by an earthquake, which is a typical no-notice emergency. A quake was assumed to occur near the Shin-Kori nuclear power plant in Ulsan, Korea, resulting in a nuclear power plant accident. An agent-based dynamic simulation model using VISSIM was employed to conduct sensitivity analyses with different child pick-up rates. The results confirmed that parents are a major cause of congestion and a vulnerable class in an emergency evacuation. The child pick-up behavior caused significant traffic congestion, and parents who pick up their children showed a higher evacuation failure rate

    HierSpeech++: Bridging the Gap between Semantic and Acoustic Representation of Speech by Hierarchical Variational Inference for Zero-shot Speech Synthesis

    Large language models (LLM)-based speech synthesis has been widely adopted in zero-shot speech synthesis. However, they require a large-scale data and possess the same limitations as previous autoregressive speech models, including slow inference speed and lack of robustness. This paper proposes HierSpeech++, a fast and strong zero-shot speech synthesizer for text-to-speech (TTS) and voice conversion (VC). We verified that hierarchical speech synthesis frameworks could significantly improve the robustness and expressiveness of the synthetic speech. Furthermore, we significantly improve the naturalness and speaker similarity of synthetic speech even in zero-shot speech synthesis scenarios. For text-to-speech, we adopt the text-to-vec framework, which generates a self-supervised speech representation and an F0 representation based on text representations and prosody prompts. Then, HierSpeech++ generates speech from the generated vector, F0, and voice prompt. We further introduce a high-efficient speech super-resolution framework from 16 kHz to 48 kHz. The experimental results demonstrated that the hierarchical variational autoencoder could be a strong zero-shot speech synthesizer given that it outperforms LLM-based and diffusion-based models. Moreover, we achieved the first human-level quality zero-shot speech synthesis.     Flexible and Shape-Reconfigurable Hydrogel Interlocking Adhesives for High Adhesion in Wet Environments Based on Anisotropic Swelling of Hydrogel Microstructures

    This study presents wet-responsive, shape-reconfigurable, and flexible hydrogel adhesives that exhibit strong adhesion under wet environments based on reversible interlocking between reconfigurable microhook arrays. The experimental investigation on the swelling behavior and structural characterization of the hydrogel microstructures reveal that the microhook arrays undergo anisotropic swelling and shape transformation upon contact with water. The adhesion between the interlocked microhook arrays is greatly enhanced under wet conditions because of the hydration-triggered shape reconfiguration of the hydrogel microstructures. Furthermore, wet adhesion monotonically increases with water-exposure time. A maximum adhesion force of 79.9 N cm-2 in the shear direction is obtained with the hydrogel microhook array after 20 h of swelling, which is 732.3% greater than that under dry conditions (i.e., 9.6 N cm-2). A simple theoretical model is developed to describe the measured adhesion forces. The results are in good agreement with the experimental data

    Identification of HLA-A*2402-restricted HCMV immediate early-1 (IE-1) epitopes as targets for CD8+ HCMV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To identify novel HLA-A*2402-restricted human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) immediate early-1 (IE-1) epitopes for adoptive immunotherapy, we explored 120 overlapping 15-amino acid spanning IE-1.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>These peptides were screened by measuring the frequency of polyclonal CD8+ T cells producing intracellular interferon-ฮณ (IFN-ฮณ) using flow cytometry and the epitopes were validated with a HCMV-infected target Cr release cytotoxicity assay.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Initial screening was performed with 12 mini-pools of 10 consecutive peptides made from 120 overlapping peptides15-amino acids in length that spanned IE-1. When peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from HLA-A*2402 HCMV-seropositive donors were sensitized with each of the 12 mini-pools, mini-pools 1 and 2 induced the highest frequency of CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) producing IFN-ฮณ. When PBMCs were stimulated with each of the twenty peptides belonging to mini-pools 1 and 2, peptides IE-1<sub>1โ€“15</sub>MESSAKRKMDPDNPD and IE-1<sub>5โ€“19</sub>AKRKMDPDNPDEGPS induced the greatest quantities of IFN-ฮณ production and cytotoxicity of HLA-matched HCMV-infected fibroblasts. To determine the exact HLA-A*2402-restricted epitopes within the two IE-1 proteins, we synthesized a total of twenty-one overlapping 9- or 10 amino acid peptides spanning IE-1<sub>1โ€“15 </sub>and IE-1<sub>5โ€“19</sub>. Peptide IE-1<sub>3โ€“12</sub>SSAKRKMDPD induced the greatest quantities of IFN-ฮณ production and target cell killing by CD8+ CTLs.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>HCMV IE-1<sub>3โ€“12</sub>SSAKRKMDPD is a HLA-A*2402-restricted HCMV IE-1 epitope that can serve as a common target for CD8+ HCMV-specific CTLs.</p

    A low grade fibromyxoid sarcoma is a rare soft tissue tumor that has a tendency to develop in the deep soft tissue of young adults and the potential for local recurrence or distant metastasis. There have been several case reports and sporadic reports in the literature. However, only 1 case has been reported in Korea but without a follow-up result. We describe a 54-year-old female patient with a low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma of the thigh that had been growing slowly for 34 years. A marginal resection of this tumor was performed. Currently, the patient is doing well without evidence of local recurrence or distant metastasis at 5 years after surgery

    Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an inflammatory arthritis associated with psoriasis. There are no generally accepted diagnostic criteria for PsA. Indeed, the diagnosis of this inflammatory arthritis is made by exclusion of other possible diseases and based upon immunologic, radiologic, and clinical features which are consistent with the diagnosis. Inflammatory arthritis in a patient with psoriasis can be an important clue for the diagnosis of PsA, but the possibility for diagnosis of other inflammatory arthritides ever remains.     Corn-cob like nanofibres as cathode catalysts for an effective microstructure design in solid oxide fuel cells

    This research was supported by the New & Renewable Energy Core Technology Program of the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP) with a financial resource from the Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy (No. 20133030011320).An efficient cathode for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is mainly determined by the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of the mixed materials. We demonstrate a new microstructure design through a nanofibrous electrode based on an unique corn-cob structure. One-step process to produce a corn-cob ceramic nanofiber of La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 (LSM) and Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) is introduced by an electrospinning equipped with a coaxial nozzel. From the microscope analysis, perfect corn-cob nanofibers are finely produced with the diameter of 350 nm for a core and nanoparticles (30-40 nm) stacked on the surface like as a core-shell structure. The cathode fabricated by nanofibers with LSM outside and YSZ inside (YSZ@LSM) shows the best maximum power density of 1.15 Wcm-2 at 800 oC with low polarization resistance, which is higher than the reverse core and shell positions (LSM@YSZ) and even the commercial LSM-YSZ. This better outcome is more obvious at the elevated temperature due to the accelerated catalytic activity. Therefore, we could find the insight into the key factors enhancing the ORR activity and single cell performance in terms of not only the nanofibrous core@shell structure but also more reaction active sites from the optimum catalyst position at the designed corn-cob nanofibers based cathodes.PreprintPostprintPeer reviewe

    High density of ice krill (Euphausia crystallorophias) in the Amundsen sea coastal polynya, Antarctica

    High densities of ice krill Euphausia crystallorophias were observed along six acoustic transects within the Amundsen Sea Coastal Polynya, Antarctica. Two-frequency acoustic backscatter data was examined in the austral summers of January 2011 and February 2012. A dB identification window (Sv120โˆ’38) identified ice krill dominating the acoustic backscatter. The density of ice krill, calculated with the stochastic distorted-wave born approximation model, ranged between 4.5 and 30 g wet mass mโˆ’2 for each transect (a mean of 16 g wet mass mโˆ’2 for all transects), these high values are an order of magnitude higher than recorded previously in the Ross Sea Polynya. High densities were detected along the ice shelf and near the boundary between pack ice and coastal polynya, and we postulate that these could be important habitats for ice krill. The high densities observed along the transects make ice krill a potentially important, but poorly known contributor to these high-latitude shelf food webs
