Development of Approach to Estimate Volume Fraction of Multiphase Material Using Dielectrics
Most engineering as well as pavement materials are composites composed of two or
more components to obtain a variety of solid properties to support internal and external
loading. The composite materials rely on physical or chemical properties and volume
fraction of each component. While the properties can be identified easily, the volume
fraction is hard to be estimated due to the volumetric variation during the performance in
the field. Various test procedures have been developed to measure the volume fractions;
however, they depend on subjective determination and judgment. As an alternative,
electromagnetic technique using dielectric constant was developed to estimate the
volume fraction. Empirical and mechanistic approaches were used to relate the
dielectric constant and volume fraction. While the empirical models are not very
accurate in all cases, the mechanistic models require assumptions of constituent
dielectric constants. For those reasons, the existing approaches might produce less
accurate estimate of volume fraction. In this study, a mechanistic-based approach using
the self consistent scheme was developed to be applied to multiphase materials. The
new approach was based on calibrated dielectric constant of components to improve
results without any assumptions. Also, the system identification was used iteratively to
solve for dielectric parameters and volume fraction at each step. As the validation
performed to verify the viability of the new approach using soil mixture and portland
cement concrete, it was found that the approach has produced a significant improvement
in the accuracy of the estimated volume fraction
Time-varying radome slope estimation for passive homing anti-ship missiles
This paper addresses a time-varying radome slope (RS) estimation problem for passive homing anti-ship missiles. Apart from conventional approaches, the non-linear characteristics of the radome aberration error is taken into account for modeling the RS dynamics. In addition, it is shown that the acceleration dither is necessary for ensuring the observability of the RS estimation with passive seeker measurements. Based on this observation, a linear RS measurement equation is set up by analyzing the seeker response to the high-frequency acceleration dither. Thus, the RS estimation problem can be easily resolved by designing a time-varying Kalman filter. Since the proposed approach adopts a simple linear filter structure, it is suitable for an in-flight real-time RS estimation. Through the computer simulation for a typical ASM-target engagement scenario, the usefulness of the suggested scheme is demonstrated
Traffic volume and load data measurement using a portable weigh in motion system: A case study
AbstractTraditionally, traffic loading characteristics are collected for pavement design and performance prediction purposes using permanent roadside weigh-in-motion (WIM) stations. However, high installation and maintenance costs associated with these permanent WIM stations dictate that their deployment be mostly limited to major highways, such as the interstate network. Quite often however, pavement damage on high volume rural highways with heavy truck proportions is more severe than anticipated, and there is no effective way of quantifying the traffic loading on these highways. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the potential application of portable WIM systems as a means for bringing the WIM technology to these high volume rural highways. A portable WIM unit was deployed in the Texas overweight corridor in Hidalgo County (Pharr District) near the USA-Mexico border on highway FM 1016 for collecting traffic data for a minimum of three weeks in each direction. The collected traffic data were analyzed to generate traffic parameters such as volume, load spectra, and overloading information both in terms of the gross vehicle weight (GVW) and axle weight. The computed traffic parameters were successful in partially explaining some of the existing pavement conditions on this highway. Overall, the study findings indicated that the portable WIM unit can be used as a convenient and cost-effective means for collecting reliable traffic information for design, analysis, and monitoring purposes. However, proper in-situ calibration of the portable WIM unit at each site is imperative prior to any real-time traffic data collection
Genome-wide genetic aberrations of thymoma using cDNA microarray based comparative genomic hybridization
BACKGROUND:
Thymoma is a heterogeneous group of tumors in biology and clinical behavior. Even though thymoma is divided into five subgroups following the World Health Organization classification, the nature of the disease is mixed within the subgroups.
RESULTS:
We investigated the molecular characteristics of genetic changes variation of thymoma using cDNA microarray based-comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) with a 17 K cDNA microarray in an indirect, sex-matched design. Genomic DNA from the paraffin embedded 39 thymoma tissues (A 6, AB 11, B1 7, B2 7, B3 8) labeled with Cy-3 was co-hybridized with the reference placenta gDNA labeled with Cy-5. Using the CAMVS software, we investigated the deletions on chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12, 13 and 18 throughout the thymoma. Then, we evaluated the genetic variations of thymoma based on the subgroups and the clinical behavior. First, the 36 significant genes differentiating five subgroups were selected by Significance Analysis of Microarray. Based on these genes, type AB was suggested to be heterogeneous at the molecular level as well as histologically. Next, we observed that the thymoma was divided into A, B (1, 2) and B3 subgroups with 33 significant genes. In addition, we selected 70 genes differentiating types A and B3, which differ largely in clinical behaviors. Finally, the 11 heterogeneous AB subtypes were able to correctly assign into A and B (1, 2) types based on their genetic characteristics.
CONCLUSION:
In our study, we observed the genome-wide chromosomal aberrations of thymoma and identified significant gene sets with genetic variations related to thymoma subgroups, which might provide useful information for thymoma pathobiology.ope
Impaired learning and memory in CD38 null mutant mice
CD38 is an enzyme that catalyzes the formation of cyclic ADP ribose and nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide phosphate, both of which are involved in the mobilization of Ca2+ from intracellular stores. Recently, CD38 has been shown to regulate oxytocin release from hypothalamic neurons. Importantly, CD38 mutations are associated with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and CD38 knockout (CD38(-/-)) mice display ASD-like behavioral phenotypes including deficient parental behavior and poor social recognition memory. Although ASD and learning deficits commonly co-occur, the role of CD38 in learning and memory has not been investigated. We report that CD38(-/-)mice show deficits in various learning and memory tasks such as the Morris water maze, contextual fear conditioning, and the object recognition test. However, either long-term potentiation or long-term depression is not impaired in the hippocampus of CD38(-/-)mice. Our results provide convincing evidence that CD38(-/-)mice show deficits in various learning and memory tasks including spatial and non-spatial memory tasks. Our data demonstrate that CD38 is critical for regulating hippocampus-dependent learning and memory without modulating synaptic plasticity.open1
Reversible Splenium Lesion of the Corpus Callosum in Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Failure Syndrome
This is the first case of virus-associated encephalitis/encephalopathy in which the pathogen was Hantaan virus. A 53-yr-old man presented fever, renal failure and a hemorrhagic tendency and he was diagnosed with hemorrhagic fever with renal failure syndrome (HFRS). In the course of his illness, mild neurologic symptoms such as dizziness and confusion developed and magnetic resonance images revealed a reversible lesion in the splenium of the corpus callosum. This case suggests that HFRS patients with neurologic symptoms like dizziness and mental slowing should be considered to have structural brain lesions and to require brain imaging studies
Successful Percutaneous Renal Artery Angioplasty and Stenting for Acute Oliguric Renal Failure in a Solitary Functioning Kidney Caused by Takayasu's Arteritis
Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is a nonspecific, chronic and stenotic panarteritis which usually involves the aorta and its major branches. Corticosteroid and immunosuppressants are recommended to manage the acute inflammatory phase, but their long term benefits are uncertain. Blood pressure (BP) control during the chronic phase of TA is essential to preserve renal function, which is associated with the patient's long-term prognosis and survival. Revascularization in organ damaging arterial stenosis with percutaneous angioplasty (PTA)/stenting or bypass surgery have been accepted as established treatment options in chronic complicated phase of TA. We present a case of a 31-year-old female patient with a two-day history of sudden onset oliguria and generalized edema whose acute oliguric renal failure was successfully reversed following PTA and stenting in a solitary functioning kidney with critical renal artery stenosis (RAS) caused by TA
