An empirical examination of factors that influence venture capital investment and the location of funds
Entrepreneurs who contribute to economic growth have looked to venture capital firms as a major source of financing. This thesis tests the significance of explanatory variables for investment in venture capital at both the national and regional levels. The explanatory variables predicting national new investment in venture capital include capital pins tax rates, stock market pricing, risk premiums, and regulations on pension fund investment. Further, this thesis examines whether the location of venture capital funds depends on research and development funds at universities within a state, state corporate income tax burdens, state unemployment rates, and average weekly earnings within a state

Nursing Student Interprofessional Simulation Increases Empathy and Improves Attitudes on Poverty
Poverty is increasing and it has adverse effects on health. Nurses need to understand how to help patients in poverty meet health goals within interprofessional teams. Nursing students and Veteran’s Affairs employees, consisting of patient care and support staff, were recruited for an interprofessional poverty simulation. Prior to and directly following the simulation, participants were asked to complete the Attitudes about Poverty and Poor People (APPP) scale, the Toronto Empathy Questionnaire (TEQ), and the Self Reflection and Insight Scale (SRIS). Scores on the APPP and TEQ improved. The SRIS results had no significant changes. Interprofessional simulation positively impacts attitudes toward poverty and empathy in nursing students and health professionals
Garry Winogrand in L.A.
I come from New York, but I never really knew Garry Winogrand, though I certainly knew about him. He could often be seen with other photographers, his pals, on 57th street near Bloomingdale’s, or the Museum of Modern Art, not far away. His New York pictures were wonderful, I thought—they were intense and tangential and very true to what I knew from living there. I recognized those streets, that energy, the seasonal changes of its light, the momentary encounters. Open and uninhabited spaces ar..
Deriving nutrient criteria to support 'good' ecological status in European lakes: An empirically based approach to linking ecology and management
European water policy has identified eutrophication as a priority issue for water management. Substantial progress has been made in combating eutrophication but open issues remain, including setting reliable and meaningful nutrient criteria supporting ʽgoodʼ ecological status of the Water Framework Directive. The paper introduces a novel methodological approach - a set of four different methods - that can be applied to different ecosystems and stressors to derive empirically-based management targets. The methods include Ranged Major Axis (RMA) regression, multivariate Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression, logistic regression, and minimising the mismatch of classifications. We apply these approaches to establish nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) criteria for the major productive shallow lake types of Europe: high alkalinity shallow (LCB1; mean depth 3–15 m) and very shallow (LCB2; mean depth
