Common-law marriages in Colombia: a jurisprudence stance

The following paper seeks to study Colombian constitutional jurisprudence and its repercussions in Family Law, mainly, aspects regarding de facto unions. For this, Act 54 of 1990 amendments are analyzed through sentences ordered by the Colombian Constitutional Court as of 1991, including the jurisprudence evolution on this matter, which is supported by due constitutional protection to families, as being the core of society. Document analysis methodology was used for this descriptive study; this helped to identify the rights this kind of union has acquired through jurisprudence means, and most importantly, to understand that same-sex couples are also included in this category. Apart from the results that were obtained, it is reasonable to conclude that a law reform is in order to regulate, through jurisprudence, acquired rights explicitly, especially for same-sex unions.En el presente artículo se tiene como objetivo estudiar la jurisprudencia constitucional y sus repercusiones en el Derecho de Familia, en especial en las uniones maritales de hecho, en razón de lo cual se analizan los cambios introducidos a la Ley 54 de 1990, con la evolución jurisprudencial sobre el tema, a través de las sentencias proferidas por la Honorable Corte Constitucional colombiana a partir del año 1991, soportadas en la protección que le es debida constitucionalmente a las familias como núcleo fundamental de la sociedad. Para este estudio de tipo descriptivo se utilizó el análisis documental, lo que permitió identificar los derechos adquiridos por vía jurisprudencial por esta clase de uniones, y lo que es prioritario: entender que las parejas del mismo sexo quedan comprendidas dentro de este tipo de uniones maritales. Al margen de los resultados obtenidos, es lógico concluir que se hace necesaria una reforma legislativa al respecto, en donde queden regulados en forma expresa los derechos adquiridos, mediante jurisprudencias, por este tipo de parejas

Role of age and comorbidities in mortality of patients with infective endocarditis

[Purpose]: The aim of this study was to analyse the characteristics of patients with IE in three groups of age and to assess the ability of age and the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) to predict mortality. [Methods]: Prospective cohort study of all patients with IE included in the GAMES Spanish database between 2008 and 2015.Patients were stratified into three age groups:<65 years,65 to 80 years,and ≥ 80 years.The area under the receiver-operating characteristic (AUROC) curve was calculated to quantify the diagnostic accuracy of the CCI to predict mortality risk. [Results]: A total of 3120 patients with IE (1327 < 65 years;1291 65-80 years;502 ≥ 80 years) were enrolled.Fever and heart failure were the most common presentations of IE, with no differences among age groups.Patients ≥80 years who underwent surgery were significantly lower compared with other age groups (14.3%,65 years; 20.5%,65-79 years; 31.3%,≥80 years). In-hospital mortality was lower in the <65-year group (20.3%,<65 years;30.1%,65-79 years;34.7%,≥80 years;p < 0.001) as well as 1-year mortality (3.2%, <65 years; 5.5%, 65-80 years;7.6%,≥80 years; p = 0.003).Independent predictors of mortality were age ≥ 80 years (hazard ratio [HR]:2.78;95% confidence interval [CI]:2.32–3.34), CCI ≥ 3 (HR:1.62; 95% CI:1.39–1.88),and non-performed surgery (HR:1.64;95% CI:11.16–1.58).When the three age groups were compared,the AUROC curve for CCI was significantly larger for patients aged <65 years(p < 0.001) for both in-hospital and 1-year mortality. [Conclusion]: There were no differences in the clinical presentation of IE between the groups. Age ≥ 80 years, high comorbidity (measured by CCI),and non-performance of surgery were independent predictors of mortality in patients with IE.CCI could help to identify those patients with IE and surgical indication who present a lower risk of in-hospital and 1-year mortality after surgery, especially in the <65-year group

An Image Encryption Scheme Synchronizing Optimized Chaotic Systems Implemented on Raspberry Pis

Guaranteeing security in information exchange is a challenge in public networks, such as in the highly popular application layer Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol. On the one hand, chaos generators have shown their usefulness in masking data that can be recovered while having the appropriate binary string. Privacy can then be accomplished by implementing synchronization techniques to connect the transmitter and receiver, among millions of users, to encrypt and decrypt data having the correct public key. On the other hand, chaotic binary sequences can be generated on Rapsberry Pis that can be connected over MQTT. To provide privacy and security, the transmitter and receiver (among millions of devices) can be synchronized to have the same chaotic public key to encrypt and decrypt data. In this manner, this paper shows the implementation of optimized chaos generators on Raspberry Pis that are wirelessly connected via MQTT for the IoT protocol. The publisher encrypts data that are public to millions of interconnected devices, but the data are decrypted by the subscribers having the correct chaotic binary sequence. The image encryption system is tested by performing NIST, TestU01, NPCR, UACI and other statistical analyses

Tamoxifen Suppresses the Immune Response to Plasmodium berghei ANKA and Exacerbates Symptomatology

Malaria is the most lethal parasitic disease in the world. Mortality and severity in symptoms are higher in men than women, suggesting that oestrogens, which are in higher concentration in females than in males, may regulate the immune response against malaria. Tamoxifen, a selective oestrogen receptor modulator used in breast cancer treatment due to its antagonistic effect on oestrogen receptors α and β, is also studied because of its potential therapeutic use for several parasitic diseases. However, most studies, including one in malaria, have not addressed the immunomodulatory role of tamoxifen. In this work, we evaluated the effect of tamoxifen on the immune response of CBA/Ca mice against Plasmodium berghei ANKA. This study showed for the first time that tamoxifen increased parasite load, aggravated symptoms by decreasing body temperature and body weight, and worsened anaemia. Additionally, tamoxifen significantly increased the splenic index and the percentages of CD4+ and NK+ cells on day eight post-infection. By contrast, tamoxifen decreased both CD8+ and B220+ populations in the spleen and decreased the serum levels of IL-2, IL-6, and IL-17. Our findings support the notion that tamoxifen is a potent immunomodulator in malaria-infected mice and suggest caution when administering it to malaria-infected women with breast cancer
