    Sugar Derivatives in Residues Produced from the UV Irradiation of Astrophysical Ice Analogs

    A large variety of organic compounds of astrobiological and prebiotic interest have been detected in carbonaceous meteorites. These include amino acids, carboxylic acids, amphiphiles, functionalized nitrogen heterocycles such as nucleobases, functionalized polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons such as quinones, and sugar derivatives. The sugar derivatives identified in the Murchison and Murray meteorites are mainly sugar alcohols and sugar acids, and only the smallest sugar (dihydroxyacetone) has been detected. The presence of such a variety of organics in meteorites strongly suggests that molecules essential to life can form abiotically under astrophysical conditions. This hypothesis is further supported by laboratory studies in which astrophysical ice analogs (mixtures of H2O, CO, CO2, CH3OH, CH4, NH3, etc.) are subjected to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at low temperature (<15 K) to simulate cold interstellar environments. These studies show that the organic residues recovered at room temperature after irradiation contain amino acids, amphiphiles, nucleobases, sugar derivatives, as well as other complex organic compounds. The finding of such compounds under plausible interstellar conditions is consistent with the presence of organic compounds in meteorites. Until very recently, no systematic search for the presence of sugar derivatives in laboratory residues had been carried out. The detection of ribose, the sugar constituent of RNA in all living systems, as well as other sugars, sugar alcohols, and sugar acids have been recently reported in one organic residue produced from the UV irradiation of an H2O:CH3OH:NH3 (10:3.5:1) ice mixture at 80 K. In this work, we present a detailed study of organic residues produced from the UV irradiation ice mixtures of several starting compositions (containing H2O, CH3OH, CO, CO2, and/or NH3) at <15 K for their sugar derivative content. Our results confirm the presence of all 3C5C sugar alcohols, several 3C5C sugars, and all 3C4C sugar acids (in decreasing order of abundances) in the residues. The higher abundances of sugar alcohols in these residues suggest a pathway in which sugar alcohols are formed first, while the formation of sugars and sugar acids require more steps. Finally, our results are compared with the detection of sugars derivatives in primitive meteorites

    Lack of association of human leukocyte antigen-B7 with COPD and rate of decline in lung function

    SummaryBackground: Although variation in the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) locus is associated with various diseases, there have been a limited number of studies that have examined the possible role of HLA in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Only HLA-B7 has been shown to be correlated with low forced expiratory volume in 1s (FEV1) in Caucasians; however, this finding has not been replicated. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution of the HLA-B7 allele to COPD and to rate of decline of lung function.Methods: We determined the prevalence of HLA-B7 in a group of COPD patients and a non-obstructed control group of smokers by using a polymerase chain reaction-based genotyping assay. We also determined the prevalence of HLA-B7 in smokers selected from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, Lung Health Study for having the fastest and slowest decline of lung function.Results: No significant difference was found in the frequency of HLA-B7 between the COPD and non-obstructed groups. There was also no significant association of HLA-B7 with rate of decline of lung function.Conclusion: These data indicate that HLA-B7 does not contribute to COPD or rate of decline of FEV1 in smokers

    Commissioning ShARCS: the Shane Adaptive optics infraRed Camera-Spectrograph for the Lick Observatory 3-m telescope

    We describe the design and first-light early science performance of the Shane Adaptive optics infraRed Camera-Spectrograph (ShARCS) on Lick Observatory's 3-m Shane telescope. Designed to work with the new ShaneAO adaptive optics system, ShARCS is capable of high-efficiency, diffraction-limited imaging and low-dispersion grism spectroscopy in J, H, and K-bands. ShARCS uses a HAWAII-2RG infrared detector, giving high quantum efficiency (>80%) and Nyquist sampling the diffraction limit in all three wavelength bands. The ShARCS instrument is also equipped for linear polarimetry and is sensitive down to 650 nm to support future visible-light adaptive optics capability.     <i>Legionella</i> species: A potential problem associated with rain water harvesting systems?

    The risk of Legionella transmission from rain water harvesting (RWH)-fed water toilet flushing was investigated. Experiments monitored RWH tanks to determine Legionella spp. presence which was successfully isolated from three of four of RWH tanks (site 1: 3600 CFU/dm3 in February and 3600 CFU/dm3 in May; site 2: not detected; site 3: 3; site 4: 44,000 GU/dm3), and to determine whether toilets could generate aerosol droplets capable of harbouring bacteria. The concentrations of particles measuring 10 µm or less in diameter (PM10, capable of reaching the alveolar region of the lungs and causing disease) were monitored following flushes. Aerosols were detectable in an enclosed toilet cubicle (PM10 concentration increased in one experiment from 0.038 mg/m3 when t = 1–600 s to 0.057 mg/m3 when t = 600–800 s). Recovery of Lactobacillus plantarum (surrogate for Legionella) from a seeded toilet cistern (108 CFU ml/dm3) indicated that bacteria were expelled, as demonstrated by recovery on MRS plates placed around the toilet unit. Legionella could be dispersed via aerosols from a toilet flushed with water from an RWH system and the effect would be more pronounced in smaller, enclosed areas, but this is unlikely to pose a risk to human health
