    Using Structural Docking for Drug Repurposing

    poster abstractRecently the FDA has increased restrictions making it very difficult to get a new drug out. Therefore it is desirable to repurpose a drug already in use, one which has passed clinical studies and has few side effects. For this reason we created a method to repurpose existing drugs to treat diseases other than their known targets. In this study we chose to demonstrate our method on colorectal cancer. CRC is an interesting disease for this approach, as known CRC chemotherapy drugs are ineffective in curing this kind of cancer. To find repurposed drugs for CRC we first use a structural algorithm to identify probable CRC gene targets for a specific set of in market cancer drugs. After prioritizing these targets, the relationships between the gene targets and the potential drugs are validated and scored using Autodock. We can then identify which drugs have the greatest potential of being repurposed to treat CRC. It is our hope that this method will be able to aid in finding new treatments for diseases without the cost and risk of developing new drugs

The results suggest that over the entire period of the analysis, futures markets provide only marginal decision-making information to the producer; however, more recent signals do appear to be useful.     Early life growth patterns persist for 12 years and impact pulmonary outcomes in cystic fibrosis

    BACKGROUND: In children with cystic fibrosis (CF), recovery from growth faltering within 2 years of diagnosis (Responders) is associated with better growth and less lung disease at age 6 years. This study examined whether these benefits are sustained through 12 years of age. METHODS: Longitudinal growth from 76 children with CF enrolled in the Wisconsin CF Neonatal Screening Project was examined and categorized into 5 groups: R12, R6, and R2, representing Responders who maintained growth improvement to age 12, 6, and 2 years, respectively, and I6 and N6, representing Non-responders whose growth did and did not improve during ages 2-6 years, respectively. Lung disease was evaluated by % predicted forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and chest radiograph (CXR) scores. RESULTS: Sixty-two percent were Responders. Within this group, 47% were R12, 28% were R6, and 25% were R2. Among Non-responders, 76% were N6. CF children with meconium ileus (MI) had worse lung function and CXR scores compared to other CF children. Among 53 children with pancreatic insufficiency without MI, R12 had significantly better FEV1 (97-99% predicted) and CXR scores during ages 6-12 years than N6 (89-93% predicted). Both R6 and R2 experienced a decline in FEV1 by ages 10-12 years. CONCLUSIONS: Early growth recovery in CF is critical, as malnutrition during infancy tends to persist and catch-up growth after age 2 years is difficult. The longer adequate growth was maintained after early growth recovery, the better the pulmonary outcomes at age 12 years

The transceiver is configured to transmit and receive data over a network according to a plurality of communication parameters. The communications processor is configured to divide the collection of data into a plurality of data streams; assign a priority level to each of the respective data streams, where the priority level reflects the criticality of the respective data stream; and modify a communication parameter of at least one of the plurality of data streams according to the priority of the at least one data stream

    Polynomial time algorithms for multicast network code construction

    The famous max-flow min-cut theorem states that a source node s can send information through a network (V, E) to a sink node t at a rate determined by the min-cut separating s and t. Recently, it has been shown that this rate can also be achieved for multicasting to several sinks provided that the intermediate nodes are allowed to re-encode the information they receive. We demonstrate examples of networks where the achievable rates obtained by coding at intermediate nodes are arbitrarily larger than if coding is not allowed. We give deterministic polynomial time algorithms and even faster randomized algorithms for designing linear codes for directed acyclic graphs with edges of unit capacity. We extend these algorithms to integer capacities and to codes that are tolerant to edge failures

    Pseudodoping of Metallic Two-Dimensional Materials by The Supporting Substrates

    We demonstrate how hybridization between a two-dimensional material and its substrate can lead to an apparent heavy doping, using the example of monolayer TaS2_2 grown on Au(111). Combining ab-initio\textit{ab-initio} calculations, scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments and a generic model, we show that strong changes in Fermi areas can arise with much smaller actual charge transfer. This mechanism, which we refer to as pseudodoping, is a generic effect for metallic two-dimensional materials which are either adsorbed to metallic substrates or embedded in vertical heterostructures. It explains the apparent heavy doping of TaS2_2 on Au(111) observed in photoemission spectroscopy and spectroscopic signatures in scanning tunneling spectroscopy. Pseudodoping is associated with non-linear energy-dependent shifts of electronic spectra, which our scanning tunneling spectroscopy experiments reveal for clean and defective TaS2_2 monolayer on Au(111). The influence of pseudodoping on the formation of charge ordered, magnetic, or superconducting states is analyzed.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1609.0022

    Ability, gender, and performance standards: Evidence from academic probation

    We use a regression discontinuity design to examine students\u27 responses to being placed on academic probation. Consistent with a model of introducing performance standards, we find that being placed on probation at the end of the first year discourages some students from returning to school while improving the GPAs of those who do. We find heterogeneous responses across prior academic performance, gender, and native language, and discuss these results within the context of the model. We also find negative effects on graduation rates, particularly for students with the highest high school grades
