The basic transport equations of mass, momentum and energy were formulated in terms of generalized nonorthogonal coordinates, which allows for adaptive griding and arbitrary particle shape.     New Results from a Near-Infrared Search for Hidden Broad-Line Regions in Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

    This paper reports the latest results from a near-infrared search for hidden broad-line regions (BLRs: FWHM >~ 2,000 km/s) in ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs). The new sample contains thirty-nine ULIGs from the 1-Jy sample selected for their lack of BLRs at optical wavelengths. The results from this new study are combined with those from our previous optical and near-infrared surveys to derive the fraction of all ULIGs with optical or near-infrared signs of genuine AGN activity (either a BLR or [Si VI] emission). Comparisons of the dereddened emission-line luminosities of the optical or obscured BLRs detected in the ULIGs of the 1-Jy sample with those of optical quasars indicate that the obscured AGN/quasar in ULIGs is the main source of energy in at least 15 -- 25% of all ULIGs in the 1-Jy sample. This fraction is 30 -- 50% among ULIGs with L_ir > 10^{12.3} L_sun. These results are compatible with those from recent mid-infrared spectroscopic surveys carried out with ISO.     We present high-resolution (30"-1') 12, 25, 60, and 100 micron images of 106 interacting galaxy systems contained in the IRAS Revised Bright Galaxy Sample (RBGS, Sanders et al. 2003), a complete sample of all galaxies having a 60 micron flux density greater than 5.24 Jy. These systems were selected to have at least two distinguishable galaxies separated by less than three average galactic diameters, and thus we have excluded very widely separated systems and very advanced mergers. The new complete survey has the same properties as the prototype survey of Surace et al. 1993. We find no increased tendency for infrared-bright galaxies to be associated with other infrared bright galaxies among the widely separated pairs studied here. We find small enhancements in far-infrared activity in multiple galaxy systems relative to RBGS non-interacting galaxies with the same blue luminosity distribution. We also find no differences in infrared activity (as measured by infrared color and luminosity) between late and early-type spiral galaxies.Comment: 49 pages, 13 figures.     A sintering model for SiC(sub)w/Si3N4 composites

    Presented is a model which suggests that it should be possible to pressureless sinter a SiC(sub w)/ Si3N4 composite to theoretical density. Prior failure to achieve complete densification by sintering is attributed to the use of compositions which result in a glass deficit. There is one basic premise for this model. The ratio of glass amount to surface area of nonglass constituents must be the same for both composite and sinterable monolithic Si3N4. This model suggests that whisker and grain sizes and whisker loading influence the glass amount necessary for successful sintering of composites. According to the model, a large glass amount will be necessary for successful sintering of these composites. However, grain boundary thicknesses in the composite will be less than those in the analogous monolithic materials. This suggests that good high temperature strength may still be attained.     Slurry-pressing consolidation of silicon nitride

    A baseline slurry-pressing method for a silicon nitride material is developed. The Si3N4 composition contained 5.8 wt percent SiO2 and 6.4 wt percent Y2O3. Slurry-pressing variables included volume percent solids, application of ultrasonic energy, and pH. Twenty vol percent slurry-pressed material was approximately 11 percent stronger than both 30 vol percent slurry-pressed and dry-pressed materials. The Student's t-test showed the difference to be significant at the 99 percent confidence level. Twenty volume percent (300 h) slurry-pressed test bars exhibited strengths as high as 980 MPa. Large, columnar beta-Si3N4 grains caused failure in the highest strength specimens. The improved strength correlated with better structural uniformity as determined by radiography, optical microscopy, and image analysis

    Resolving the virial discrepancy in clusters of galaxies with modified Newtonian dynamics

    A sample of 197 X-ray emitting clusters of galaxies is considered in the context of Milgrom's modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND). It is shown that the gas mass, extrapolated via an assumed β\beta model to a fixed radius of 3 Mpc, is correlated with the gas temperature as predicted by MOND (MgT2M_g \propto T^2). The observed temperatures are generally consistent with the inferred mass of hot gas; no substantial quantity of additional unseen matter is required in the context of MOND. However, modified dynamics cannot resolve the strong lensing discrepancy in those clusters where this phenomenon occurs. The prediction is that additional baryonic matter may be detected in the central regions of rich clusters.Comment: Submitted to A&A, 4 pages, 3 figures, A&A macro
