Cluster of galaxies around seven radio-loud QSOs at 1<z<1.6: K-band images
We have conducted a NIR study of the environments of seven radio-loud quasars
at redshifts 1<z<1.6. In present paper we describe deep band images
obtained for the fields of ~6X6 arcmin around the quasars with 3
limiting magnitudes of K~20.5. These fields were previously studied using deep
B and R band images (Sanchez & Gonzalez-Serrano 1999). Using together optical
and NIR data, it has been found a significant excess of galaxies which
optical-NIR colours, luminosity, spatial scale, and number of galaxies are
compatible with clusters at the redshift of the quasar.
We have selected a sample of cluster candidates analyzing the R-K vs. K
diagram. A ~25% of the candidates present red optical-NIR colours and an
ultraviolet excess. This population has been also found in clusters around
quasars at the same redshifts (Tanaka et al. 2000; Haines et al. 2001). These
galaxies seem to follow a mixed evolution: a main passive evolution plus late
starformation processes. The quasars do not inhabit the core of the clusters,
being found in the outer regions. This result agrees with the hypothesis that
the origin/feeding mechanism of the nuclear activity were merging processes.
The quasars inhabit the region were a collision is most probably to produce a

XMM-Newton and Deep Optical Observations of the OTELO fields: the Groth-Westphal Strip
OTELO (OSIRIS Tunable Emission Line Object Survey) will be carried out with
the OSIRIS instrument at the 10 m GTC telescope at La Palma, and is aimed to be
the deepest and richest survey of emission line objects to date. The deep
narrow-band optical data from OSIRIS will be complemented by means of
additional observations that include: (i) an exploratory broad-band survey that
is already being carried out in the optical domain, (ii) FIR and sub-mm
observations to be carried with the Herschel space telescope and the GTM, and
(iii) deep X-Ray observations from XMM-Newton and Chandra.Here we present a
preliminary analysis of public EPIC data of one of the OTELO targets,the
Groth-Westphal strip, gathered from the XMM-Newton Science Archive (XSA). EPIC
images are combined with optical BVRI data from our broadband survey carried
out with the 4.2m WHT at La Palma. Distance-independent diagnostics (involving

Releases of Asian houbara must respect genetic and geographic origin to preserve inherited migration behaviour:evidence from a translocation experiment
Maintaining appropriate migratory strategies is important in conservation; however, translocations of migratory animals may alter locally-evolved migration behaviours of recipient populations if these are different and heritable. We used satellite telemetry and experimental translocation to quantify differences and assess heritability in migration behaviours between three migratory Asian houbara (Chlamydotis macqueenii) breeding populations (640 km range across eastern, central and western Uzbekistan). Adults from the eastern population migrated twice as far (mean = 1,184 km ± 44 s.e.) as the western population (656 km ± 183 s.e.) and showed significantly less variation in migration distance than the central population (1,030 km ± 127 s.e.). The western and central populations wintered significantly further north (mean: +8.32°N ± 1.70 s.e. and +4.19°N ± 1.16 s.e., respectively) and the central population further west (-3.47°E ± 1.46 s.e.) than individuals from the eastern population.These differences could arise from differing innate drive, or through learnt facultative responses to topography, filtered by survival. Translocated birds from the eastern population (wild laid and captive-reared, n= 5) migrated further than adults from either western or central recipient populations, particularly in their second migration year. Translocated birds continued migrating south past suitable wintering grounds used by the recipient populations despite having to negotiate mountain obstacles. Together, this suggests a considerable conserved heritable migratory component with local adaptation at a fine geographic scale. Surviving translocated individuals returned to their release site, suggesting continued translocations would lead to introgression of the heritable component and risk altering recipient migration patterns. Conservation biologists considering translocation interventions for migratory populations should evaluate potential genetic components of migratory behaviour
Observational constraints to boxy/peanut bulge formation time
Boxy/peanut bulges are considered to be part of the same stellar structure as
bars and both could be linked through the buckling instability. The Milky Way
is our closest example. The goal of this letter is determining if the mass
assembly of the different components leaves an imprint in their stellar
populations allowing to estimate the time of bar formation and its evolution.
To this aim we use integral field spectroscopy to derive the stellar age
distributions, SADs, along the bar and disc of NGC 6032. The analysis shows
clearly different SADs for the different bar areas. There is an underlying old
(>=12 Gyr) stellar population for the whole galaxy. The bulge shows star
formation happening at all times. The inner bar structure shows stars of ages
older than 6 Gyrs with a deficit of younger populations. The outer bar region
presents a SAD similar to that of the disc. To interpret our results, we use a
generic numerical simulation of a barred galaxy. Thus, we constrain, for the
first time, the epoch of bar formation, the buckling instability period and the
posterior growth from disc material. We establish that the bar of NGC 6032 is
old, formed around 10 Gyr ago while the buckling phase possibly happened around
8 Gyr ago. All these results point towards bars being long-lasting even in the

Dietary patterns and total mortality in a Mediterranean cohort: the SUN project
BACKGROUND:
Different dietary patterns have been associated with several health outcomes, including morbidity and mortality. There is little evidence on the association between empirically derived dietary patterns and all-cause mortality in Southern European populations.
OBJECTIVE:
The aim of our study was to prospectively evaluate the association between an empirically derived dietary pattern and all-cause mortality.
DESIGN:
The Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra (SUN) Project is an ongoing, multipurpose, prospective and dynamic Spanish cohort.
PARTICIPANTS/SETTING:
Participants were a prospective cohort of 16,008 middle-aged Spanish adults. All of them were university graduates (alumni) (59.6% women, mean age 38 years). Usual diet was assessed at baseline with a validated semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES:
Deaths were confirmed by review of medical records and of the National Death Index.
STATISTICAL ANALYSIS:
Dietary patterns were ascertained through a factor (principal component) analysis based on 30 predefined food groups. Participants were classified according to tertiles of adherence to the three main dietary patterns identified with factor analysis. Cox regression models were fitted to estimate multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios and 95% CIs for mortality.
RESULTS:
Three major dietary patterns were identified. They were labelled Western dietary pattern (rich in red and processed meat, potatoes, and fast food), Mediterranean dietary pattern (rich in vegetables, fish and seafood, fruits, and olive oil), and alcoholic beverages dietary pattern. During follow-up, 148 deaths were reported (mean age at death 54.5 years). After adjustment for potential confounders, the lowest risk of all-cause mortality was found in the tertile of highest adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern (adjusted hazard ratio for third vs first tertile 0.53, 95% CI 0.34 to 0.84) (P for trend <0.01). The Western dietary pattern and alcoholic beverages dietary pattern showed no significant association with mortality.
CONCLUSIONS:
Greater adherence to an empirically derived dietary pattern approaching the traditional Mediterranean diet was associated with a reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality among middle-aged Mediterranean adults
Clean optical spectrum of the radio jet of 3C 120
We present integral field spectroscopy (IFS) of the central region of 3C 120.
We have modeled the nuclear and host galaxy 3D spectra using techniques
normally applied to imaging, decoupling both components, and obtained a
residual datacube. Using this residual datacube, we detected the extended
emission line region associated with the radio jet. We obtained, for the first
time, a clean spectrum of this region and found compelling evidences of a
jet-cloud interaction. The jet compresses and splits the gas cloud which is
ionized by the AGN and/or by the strong local UV photon field generated by a
shock process. We cannot confirm the detection of an extended emission line
