Is emamectin benzoate effective against the different stages of Spodoptera exigua (HĂŒbner) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae)?

polyphagous pest in greenhouses and open fields worldwide and also a main problem
in sweet pepper greenhouses. The effectiveness of the pesticide emamectin benzoate was tested in the laboratory on different stages of S. exigua using different concentrations and uptake routes. After dipping young (48-h-old) S. exigua eggs in emamectin benzoate at 0.5, 1 and 1.5 mg/L a.i. the chemical did not exhibit any ovicidal activity. There was, however, progressive neonate mortality at all concentrations,
culminating at 72 hours after hatching, when 100% of the larvae from the treated young
eggs died. Second and fourth instar S. exigua larvae did not exhibit significant mortality when exposed to the inert surfaces which were treated. In contrast, ingesting a diet contaminated with 0.5 mg/L a.i. of emamectin benzoate caused 100% mortality in L2 and L4 larvae 24 and 72 hours after ingestion, respectively. The LC50 value of the compound against L4 larvae that fed on sprayed sweet pepper leaves for 24 hours was 0.81 mg/L a.i..
When adults were fed on a solution of 0.5 mg/L a.i., there was a reduction in the female and male lifespan of 29.3% and 55.3%, respectively. Fecundity was reduced by more than 99%. These data suggest that emamectin benzoate is not only a useful insecticide when ingested by beet armyworm larvae but it also has ovolarvicidal and adult activity.Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovatio

Evaluation of commonly used ectoderm markers in iPSC trilineage differentiation.
Patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have become a promising resource for exploring genetics of complex diseases, discovering new drugs, and advancing regenerative medicine. Increasingly, laboratories are creating their own banks of iPSCs derived from diverse donors. However, there are not yet standardized guidelines for qualifying these cell lines, i.e., distinguishing between bona fide human iPSCs, somatic cells, and imperfectly reprogrammed cells. Here, we report the establishment of a panel of 30 iPSCs from CD34+ peripheral blood mononuclear cells, of which 10 were further differentiated in vitro into all three germ layers. We characterized these different cell types with commonly used pluripotent and lineage specific markers, and showed that NES, TUBB3, and OTX2 cannot be reliably used as ectoderm differentiation markers. Our work highlights the importance of marker selection in iPSC authentication, and the need for the field to establish definitive standard assays
Switching from natalizumab to fingolimod: an observational study
Background â Multiple sclerosis patients who discontinue using
natalizumab are at risk of a rebound in disease activity. However, the
optimal alternative therapy is not currently known. Aims of the
study â We report on clinical and MRI data and patient safety in a
group of relapsingâremitting multiple sclerosis patients who tested
seropositive for the JC virus and who have switched from
natalizumab to fingolimod because of concerns regarding PML risks.
Methods â The test for JC virus antibodies was performed in 18
relapsingâremitting multiple sclerosis patients who were being treated
with natalizumab for more than 1 year. Eight seropositive patients
switched to fingolimod while the seronegative patients continued with
natalizumab. Results â After switching to fingolimod, five of eight
patients (63%) experienced clinical relapses, and MRI activity was
detected in six of eight patients (75%). Neither clinical relapses nor
MRI activity was observed in the patients who continued with
natalizumab. No serious adverse effects were detected. Conclusions â
Natalizumab is an effective treatment for relapsingâremitting multiple
sclerosis, but its discontinuation continues to be a complex problem.
All of the therapies tried thus far, including fingolimod, have been
unable to control the reactivation of the disease. Further studies
addressing alternative therapies after natalizumab discontinuation are
necessary

We describe a fatal pediatric case of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in Panama, the first, to our knowledge, since the 1950s. Diagnosis was established by immunohistochemistry, PCR, and isolation of Rickettsia rickettsii from postmortem tissues. Molecular typing demonstrated strong relatedness of the isolate to strains of R. rickettsii from Central and South America

The catalog-to-cosmology framework for weak lensing and galaxy clustering for LSST
We present TXPipe, a modular, automated and reproducible pipeline for
ingesting catalog data and performing all the calculations required to obtain quality-assured two-point measurements of lensing and clustering, and their covariances, with the metadata necessary for parameter estimation. The pipeline is developed within the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC), and designed for cosmology analyses using LSST data. In this paper, we present the pipeline for the so-called 3x2pt analysis â a combination of three two-point functions that measure the auto- and cross-correlation between galaxy density and shapes. We perform the analysis both in real and harmonic space using TXPipe and other LSST-DESC tools. We validate the pipeline using Gaussian simulations and show that it accurately measures data vectors and recovers the input cosmology to the accuracy level required for the first year of LSST data under this simplified scenario. We also apply the pipeline to a realistic mock galaxy sample extracted from the CosmoDC2 simulation suite (Korytov et al. 2019). TXPipe establishes a baseline framework that can be built upon as the LSST survey proceeds. Furthermore, the pipeline is designed to be easily extended to science probes beyond the 3x2pt analysis
