    Expressed Confidence and Skepticism: The Effect of Expressed Confidence on Auditor Judgments

    I examine the effects of clients' expressions of confidence on auditor judgments. The confidence heuristic suggests decision makers use expressions of confidence as a cue for reliability (Price and Stone 2004). However, Van Swol (2009) posits that in some environments decision makers may use expressions of confidence as a cue for deception. The auditing environment provides a unique setting to examine this assertion because the auditing standards prescribe that auditors should maintain a skeptical mindset. One interpretation of the auditing standards suggests auditors' responses to expressions of confidence may be dependent on cues from the control and business environment. When a client has a weaker control and business environment, auditors may use expressed confidence as a cue for deception. When a client has a stronger control and business environment, auditors may use expressed confidence as a cue for reliability. I use an experiment to test these hypotheses. Results indicate that auditors do not use expressed confidence in their decision making when the client has a stronger control and business environment. In contrast, results indicate that auditors use the confidence heuristic when the client has a weaker control and business environment. The results provide new theoretical insights into decision makers' use of expressed confidence that extend both accounting and psychology research and may be useful to standard setters

    In vitro Cytotoxicity Comparison of MTA Fillapex, AH-26 and Apatite Root Canal Sealer at Different Setting Times

    Introduction: This study aimed to compare the cytotoxicity of MTA Fillapex, AH-26 and Apatite root canal sealers at different times after mixing. Methods and Materials: In this in vitro study, MTA Fillapex, AH-26 and Apatite root canal sealer were spilled uniformly by 40 µm mesh in a 96-well plate. Then, human fetal foreskin fibroblast cell line (HFFF2) were added to each sealer cell culture medium. Cytotoxicity was measured using MTT assay after 24, 48 and 72 h and seven days. Multiple comparisons were done using analysis of variances (ANOVA) and Scheffe’s post hoc test. Results: All studied sealers exhibited severe cytotoxicity (more than 70%) except for Apatite sealer (95%) at 48 h after mixing. Cytotoxicity of MTA Fillapex and AH-26 were similar (P>0.05) at 24, 48 and 72 h and 7 days after mixing of sealers. Cytotoxicity of MTA Fillapex and Apatite root canal sealer, at 24 and 48 h, were significantly different (P=0.003 and P=0.000, respectively); MTA Fillapex was more cytotoxic. However in 72 h and 7 days after mixing, the difference was not significant (P>0.05). At 24 and 48 h after mixing, AH-26 was more cytotoxic (P=0.002 and P=0.000, respectively). Same as above at 72 h and 7 days after mixing, their cytotoxicity were similar (P>0.05). Conclusion: Overall cytotoxicity of all studied materials were severe. However, it was observed that the cytotoxicity of MTA Fillapex, AH-26 and Apatite root canal sealer decreased over time. Apatite root canal sealer exhibited the least cytotoxicity. Cytotoxicity of MTA Fillapex and AH-26 were similar at different time intervals.Keywords: Cytotoxicity; MTT Assay; Root Canal Seale

    Antibacterial Activity of MTA Fillapex and AH 26 Root Canal Sealers at Different Time Intervals

    Introduction: The main goal of endodontic treatment is elimination of bacteria and their by-products from infected root canals. This study compared the antibacterial effect of two different sealers, AH 26 and MTA Fillapex, on 4 microorganisms 24, 48 and 72 h and 7 days after mixing. Methods and Materials: The microorganisms used in this study consisted of Lactobacillus acidophilus (ATCC 4356), Lactobacillus casei (ATCC 39392), Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) and Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212). This test is based on the growth of bacteria and turbidity measurement technique using a spectrophotometer, and direct contact was conducted. Multiple comparisons were carried out using repeated-measures ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test and student’s t-test. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Results: The antibacterial activity in the indirect technique was more than the technique with both sealers. In the direct technique the antibacterial activity on all microorganisms were higher for MTA Fillapex sealer. In the indirect technique, both sealers exhibited similar antibacterial properties. Conclusion: The antibacterial effect of MTA Fillapex sealer was significantly more than that of AH 26 sealer in the direct technique.     Therapeutic effects of D-aspartate in a mouse model of multiple sclerosis

    Abstract Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is an animal model of multiple sclerosis. EAE is mainly mediated by adaptive and innate immune responses that leads to an inflammatory demyelization and axonal damage. The aim of the present research was to examine the therapeutic efficacy of D-aspartic acid (D-Asp) on a mouse EAE model. EAE induction was performed in female C57BL/6 mice by myelin 40 oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (35-55) in a complete Freund's adjuvant emulsion, and D-Asp was used to test its efficiency in the reduction of EAE. During the course of study, clinical evaluation was assessed, and on Day 21, post-immunization blood samples were taken from the heart of mice for the evaluation of interleukin 6 and other chemical molecules. The mice were sacrificed, and their brain and cerebellum were removed for histological analysis. Our findings indicated that D-Asp had beneficial effects on EAE by attenuation in the severity and delay in the onset of the disease. Histological analysis showed that treatment with D-Asp can reduce inflammation. Moreover, in D-Asp-treated mice, the serum level of interleukin 6 was significantly lower than that in control animals, whereas the total antioxidant capacity was significantly higher. The data indicates that D-Asp possess neuroprotective property to prevent the onset of the multiple sclerosis

    The ChatGPT Artificial Intelligence Chatbot: How Well Does It Answer Accounting Assessment Questions?

    ChatGPT, a language-learning model chatbot, has garnered considerable attention for its ability to respond to users’ questions. Using data from 14 countries and 186 institutions, we compare ChatGPT and student performance for 28,085 questions from accounting assessments and textbook test banks. As of January 2023, ChatGPT provides correct answers for 56.5 percent of questions and partially correct answers for an additional 9.4 percent of questions. When considering point values for questions, students significantly outperform ChatGPT with a 76.7 percent average on assessments compared to 47.5 percent for ChatGPT if no partial credit is awarded and 56.5 percent if partial credit is awarded. Still, ChatGPT performs better than the student average for 15.8 percent of assessments when we include partial credit. We provide evidence of how ChatGPT performs on different question types, accounting topics, class levels, open/closed assessments, and test bank questions.
