    Las Pautas de Accesibilidad para el Contenido Web 2.0 definen cómo crear contenido web más accesible, lo que incluye a los documentos en formato PDF. Estas pautas permiten que nuestros documentos sean accesibles para un mayor número de personas y más diversas. Las pautas consideran a un amplio rango de dificultades visuales, auditivas, físicas, del habla, cognitivas, del lenguaje, de aprendizaje y neurológicas. Un documento accesible es también un documento de mayor calidad, cuyo contenido es más usable y comprensible para todos. Cuando convertimos un archivo en formato PDF, tenemos un documento fuente que ha sido creado con otro software, como puede ser un procesador de texto, un programa de maquetación o una herramienta de presentación. La accesibilidad de este tipo de documentos debe contemplar tanto la accesibilidad del documento fuente como la accesibilidad del PDF final. Es necesario seguir unas buenas prácticas en la elaboración de nuestro documento para poder convertirlo, sin dificultades, en un PDF accesible. Este documento contiene los criterios que se deben tener en cuenta para crear un documento electrónico accesible. Para ello, se proponen un conjunto de buenas prácticas con Word, organizadas en 10 apartados, así como un decálogo de requisitos para crear un PDF accesible, que sigue la misma organización..

    Diagnosing tuberculous pleural effusion using clinical data and pleural fluid analysis A study of patients less than 40 years-old in an area with a high incidence of tuberculosis

    SummaryBackgroundTuberculous pleural effusions (TPE) are common. The diagnosis is often problematic. As the determination of ADA is often unavailable in some countries, the aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic usefulness of other data from pleural fluid analysis, in young patients from populations with high prevalence of tuberculosis (TB).MethodsWe analysed 218 patients with pleural effusion (165 tuberculous, 21 infectious, 11 neoplastic, 16 miscellaneous, 3 idiopathic). We performed two regression models; one included pleural fluid ADA values (model 1), and the other without ADA (model 2).ResultsModel 1 selected two variables (ADA >35U/L) and lymphocytes (>31.5%) and correctly classified 216/218 effusions (1 false negative, 1 false positive). Model 2 (without ADA) selected three variables: lymphocytes (>31.5%), fever and cough, and correctly classified 207/218 effusions (8 false negatives, 3 false positives). The sensitivity of models 1 and 2 was 99.4% and 95.2%, specificity 98.1% and 94.3% and accuracy 99% and 95%.ConclusionsIn geographic areas with high prevalence of TB and a low prevalence of HIV, in young patients (≤40 years), it is possible to confidently diagnose TPE with either of the two regression tree models, with the utility of ADA providing superior sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy

    Temporal series analysis of population cycle threshold counts as a predictor of surge in cases and hospitalizations during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic

    Tools to predict surges in cases and hospitalizations during the COVID-19 pandemic may help guide public health decisions. Low cycle threshold (CT) counts may indicate greater SARS-CoV-2 concentrations in the respiratory tract, and thereby may be used as a surrogate marker of enhanced viral transmission. Several population studies have found an association between the oscillations in the mean CT over time and the evolution of the pandemic. For the first time, we applied temporal series analysis (Granger-type causality) to validate the CT counts as an epidemiological marker of forthcoming pandemic waves using samples and analyzing cases and hospital admissions during the third pandemic wave (October 2020 to May 2021) in Madrid. A total of 22,906 SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR-positive nasopharyngeal swabs were evaluated; the mean CT value was 27.4 (SD: 2.1) (22.2% below 20 cycles). During this period, 422,110 cases and 36,727 hospital admissions were also recorded. A temporal association was found between the CT counts and the cases of COVID-19 with a lag of 9–10 days (p ≤ 0.01) and hospital admissions by COVID-19 (p < 0.04) with a lag of 2–6 days. According to a validated method to prove associations between variables that change over time, the short-term evolution of average CT counts in the population may forecast the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic

    Fixation-off sensitivity (FOS) denotes the forms of epilepsy elicited by elimination of fixation. FOS-IGE patients are rare cases [1]. In a previous work [2] we showed that two FOS-IGE patients had different altered EEG rhythms when closing eyes; only beta band was altered in patient 1 while theta, alpha and beta were altered in patient 2. In the present work, we explain the relationship between the altered brain rhythms in these patients and the disruption in functional brain networks

    Anthelmintic activity of aminoalcohol and diamine derivatives against the gastrointestinal nematode Teladorsagia circumcincta

    11 páginas, 5 figuras, 4 tablas.Gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) infections are a serious problem in livestock production due to the great economic losses they cause. Their control is increasingly difficult because of the rapid development of drug resistance and the limited number of available drugs. Therefore, this study evaluated 18 aminoalcohol and 16 diamine derivatives against eggs, first and third stage larvae from a susceptible and a resistant isolate of Tela-dorsagia circumcincta collected from sheep. The effectiveness of the in vitro anthelmintic activity of the com-pounds was evaluated using three different procedures: Egg Hatch Test (EHT), Larval Mortality Test (LMT) and Larval Migration Inhibition Test (LMIT). Those compounds with activities higher than 90 % in the initial screening at 50 μM were selected to determine their half maximal effective concentration (EC50). In parallel, cytotoxicity assays were conducted on Caco2 and HepG2 cell lines to calculate Selectivity Indexes (SI) for each compound. The diamine 30 presented the best results in preventing egg hatching, displaying the lowest EC50 value (1.01 ±0.04 μM) of all compounds tested and the highest SI (21.21 vs. Caco-2 cells). For the LMIT, the diamine 34 showed the highest efficacy, with EC50 values of 2.67 ±0.08 and 3.02 ±0.09 μM on the susceptible and resistant isolate of the parasite, respectively.We are grateful to Dave Bartley, from Moredun Research Institute for providing the triple-resistant isolate of T. circumcincta.     Usefulness of bone turnover markers as predictors of mortality risk, disease progression and skeletal-related events appearance in patients with prostate cancer with bone metastases following treatment with zoledronic acid: TUGAMO study

    Owing to the limited validity of clinical data on the treatment of prostate cancer (PCa) and bone metastases, biochemical markers are a promising tool for predicting survival, disease progression and skeletal-related events (SREs) in these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive capacity of biochemical markers of bone turnover for mortality risk, disease progression and SREs in patients with PCa and bone metastases undergoing treatment with zoledronic acid (ZA). Methods: This was an observational, prospective and multicenter study in which ninety-eight patients were included. Patients were treated with ZA (4mg every 4 weeks for 18 months). Data were collected at baseline and 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 months after the beginning of treatment. Serum levels of bone alkaline phosphtase (BALP), aminoterminal propeptide of procollagen type I (P1NP) and beta-isomer of carboxiterminal telopeptide of collagen I (b-CTX) were analysed at all points in the study. Data on disease progression, SREs development and survival were recorded. Results: Cox regression models with clinical data and bone markers showed that the levels of the three markers studied were predictive of survival time, with b-CTX being especially powerful, in which a lack of normalisation in visit 1 (3 months after the beginning of treatment) showed a 6.3-times more risk for death than in normalised patients. Levels of these markers were also predictive for SREs, although in this case BALP and P1NP proved to be better predictors. We did not find any relationship between bone markers and disease progression. Conclusion: In patients with PCa and bone metastases treated with ZA, b-CTX and P1NP can be considered suitable predictors for mortality risk, while BALP and P1NP are appropriate for SREs.
