    Get PDF
The objective of this study is to suggest a novel approach to evaluate the potential for commercialisation of a new technology by developing a framework. More specifically, this study will examine the 'ex-ante' evaluation of the technology transfer process, in this case where the final application falls in the asset management discipline. For this purpose, a case study focusing on a chosen technology stemming from the high technology sector will be used. The technology relates to the application of software for detection of weak signals which is an established method of signal processing in the field of astronomy. This technology has the potential to be used in areas other than astronomy with several possible applications in asset management such as detecting water leakage in pipes amongst others. The applicability to detect water leakage is chosen owing to several problems with detection in the industry as well as the impact it can have in saving water in the environment. This study, therefore, will demonstrate the importance of interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary technology transfer. The study will employ both technical and business evaluation methods including lab experiments and using the Delphi technique to address the research questions. In conclusion, the chosen technology's commercial potential will be tested through expert opinion thereby focusing on the impact of a new technology and the feasibility of alternate applications and potential future applications

An Innovative Technique for Water Leak Detection Stemming from Radio Astronomy : A Potential University Technology Transfer

    Get PDF
There have been many documented cases of technology transfer from astronomy to other disciplines such as medicine, for example, a system for diagnosing breast cancer utilising software originally developed to mosaic planetary images. The approach taken in this research will involve using a technology originally developed for radio astronomy to detect water leaks in pipes that are part of water networks in various infrastructure systems. This is innovative research as it involves an interdisciplinary approach to explore a technology and evaluate its commercial potential. Experiments are underway in which signals from an acoustic phased array are amplified and digitized using a multichannel analogue-to-digital (ADC) converter and analysed using a software correlation technique to identify leak signatures. Therefore, the chosen technology’s commercialisibility will be tested for alternate applications which can be applied to infrastructures such as water networks. In addition, the importance of interdisciplinary research will also be reflected through this research

The Domestic Effect of South Africa\u27s Treaty Obligations: The Right to Education and the Copyright Amendment Bill

On 16 June 2020, the President of South Africa returned the Copyright Amendment Bill [B-13 of 2017] to Parliament, expressing reservations regarding its constitutionality and compliance with international law. In this paper, I describe the constitutional implications of compliance with international law and the binding international obligations incumbent upon South Africa in respect of copyright and international human rights law. In doing so, I argue that the Bill of Rights acts as a magnet, compelling all organs of state to give greater normative weight to those international obligations that map onto the Bill of Rights as compared to those that do not in their functioning. Finally, I explain how the provisions of the CAB that are specifically tailored to enable access to educational materials for all are not only permitted under South Africa’s international copyright obligations, but are required by the Bill of Rights and South Africa’s international human rights obligations

Developing a Human Right to Research in International Law

The covid-19 pandemic has highlighted issues concerning equitable access to and participation in research. But research has always been indispensable to human development. To what extent does international law guarantee access to research as well as the practice of researching? Drawing on the social anthropology definition of research as the pursuit of that which is not yet known, this paper locates a novel human right to research within the core international human rights covenants. The paper sets out the scope and content of the right and the nature and content of State obligations flowing from it. It concludes by outlining the implications of recognizing this right for intersecting legal regimes like intellectual property law

The underlying objective of this study was to develop a novel approach to evaluate the potential for commercialisation of a new technology. More specifically, this study examined the 'ex-ante'. evaluation of the technology transfer process. For this purpose, a technology originating from the high technology sector was used. The technology relates to the application of software for the detection of weak signals from space, which is an established method of signal processing in the field of radio astronomy. This technology has the potential to be used in commercial and industrial areas other than astronomy, such as detecting water leakages in pipes. Its applicability to detecting water leakage was chosen owing to several problems with detection in the industry as well as the impact it can have on saving water in the environment. This study, therefore, will demonstrate the importance of interdisciplinary technology transfer. The study employed both technical and business evaluation methods including laboratory experiments and the Delphi technique to address the research questions. There are several findings from this study. Firstly, scientific experiments were conducted and these resulted in a proof of concept stage of the chosen technology. Secondly, validation as well as refinement of criteria from literature that can be used for „ex-ante. evaluation of technology transfer has been undertaken. Additionally, after testing the chosen technology.s overall transfer potential using the modified set of criteria, it was found that the technology is still in its early stages and will require further development for it to be commercialised. Furthermore, a final evaluation framework was developed encompassing all the criteria found to be important. This framework can help in assessing the overall readiness of the technology for transfer as well as in recommending a viable mechanism for commercialisation. On the whole, the commercial potential of the chosen technology was tested through expert opinion, thereby focusing on the impact of a new technology and the feasibility of alternate applications and potential future applications

Achieving the next level of Growth through Competitive Intelligence Practices: An Exploratory Study of Romanian

    Get PDF
The paper explores the tool of Competitive Intelligence (CI) as an effective method of building one’s capability and focus and illustrates the benefits of gathering competitive intelligence by applying it on the top technology services firms in India. These results are then analysed in the light of the responses to the questionnaire administered to the selected three Romanian Offshore technology services providers. The study revolves around the key assumption that there is a set of factors common to all industry players whether in India or Romania, so it would be vital to collect information about how do these global competitors perceive their external environment and what strategies are they planning to adopt in order to grow in these competitive scenario. Given the growth targets set by these Romanian firms over the next five years and given the fact that there is no formal practice of gathering CI, the study recommends strategies for these Romanian players and builds a case for developing a Competitive Intelligence Plan by these firms in order to make the most of their capabilities and stay competitive

Fear Appeals and Information Security Behaviors: An Empirical Study on Mechanical Turk

    Get PDF
This study aims to conduct a methodological replication of the information security study conducted by Johnston and Warkentin (2010). This study leveraged the use of the fear appeals model (FAM) in the context of information security as they pertain to the individual use of anti-spyware software. We adopt all measures, instruments, statistical tests, theory, and models from the original study, but apply them to the Amazon Mechanical Turk population. The results from this replication study are not consistent with the original study, in that two of the five posited hypotheses have opposite effects than those originally found; threat severity is shown to have a positive effect on both response efficacy and self-efficacy, where in the original study, this is shown to have a negative effect on both. The results imply that there may be differences in which populations the study was conducted, thus requiring additional samples and statistical tests

The methodology of this research is descriptive-qualitative. The result of this research that there are 6 forms of change of awareness of woman figure in novel text Bila Fajar Menyingsing. Such awareness changes include awareness of independent self-organization, awareness to defend opinions, awareness of segregation of labor, awareness of oppression experienced by women, awareness of the right to decide on problem solving, and awareness of ideological ideas. In addition, there are some forms of gender inequality that form the basis of Ike's critical thinking, and rebellion against the social order in his ningrat environment. This form of injustice refers to Mansour Fakih's theory. In the novel text Bila Fajar Menyingsing there are 2 forms of subordination, 34 forms of stereotype, 22 violence, 2 double load, and no data related to marginalization. This form of conscious change arises in the phase of displacement, and changes in the mindset of female characters as a result of the experience and maturity of independent thinking. And the existence of a case of betrayal, also the acceptance of female characters to the reality of the attitude of noble male characters in the novel text Bila Fajar Menyingsing. This study has implications in learning activities on content analysis and the language of the novel text in class XII KD 3.9 and 4.9 National Curriculum

Developing a Transdiagnostic Measure of the Subtypes of Repetitive Thought

Rumination, worry, post-event processing and similar constructs have been recently grouped under the broader transdiagnostic concept of repetitive thought. Repetitive thought has been implicated as a maintaining factor across a broad range of disorders (such as depression, generalised anxiety disorder, and social anxiety disorder), but has also been proposed to be part of helpful processes (such as problem solving and post-traumatic growth). To account for these contradictory outcomes, it has been proposed that repetitive thought can be broken down into maladaptive abstract thought and relatively adaptive concrete thought (Watkins, 2008). However, there are currently no measures in the existing literature that assess these subtypes of repetitive thought. This thesis describes the development and validation of a transdiagnostic measure of abstract and concrete repetitive thought: the Repetitive Thought Scale (RTS). Studies 1a-4 describe the psychometric properties of a trait version of the RTS in three online samples and one university sample, whereas Studies 1b-4 describe the psychometric properties of a state version of the scale. Both versions of the scale demonstrated good factor structure, excellent reliability, and good predictive validity with symptoms of psychopathology. Interestingly, and contrary to hypothesis, concrete repetitive thought was found to be more strongly related to symptoms of psychopathology than abstract thought in these non-clinical samples. Study 5 demonstrated that the abstract subscale of the state version could be used as a manipulation check for experiments that involve repetitive thought inductions. Study 6 explored a longitudinal mediation model predicting psychopathology symptoms at the six-month follow-up using baseline symptoms as predictors. Only metacognitive beliefs about repetitive thought emerged as mediating variables in this model. Study 7 revealed that only abstract thought distinguished between never, previously and currently depressed individuals in a community clinical sample. Studies 8 and 9 compared the efficacy of rumination cues action and concrete thinking as strategies for reducing the frequency of repetitive thought. However, neither strategy emerged as efficacious in these experimental studies. Overall, these studies highlight the development of the repetitive thought scale, which is a reliable and valid transdiagnostic measure of abstract and concrete repetitive thought
