Listen to the BLUE: Towards a pan-Antarctic monitoring system and blueprint of analysis methods to study fin and Antarctic blue whales in the Southern Ocean

    Get PDF
The Southern Ocean Research Partnership (SORP) is an international collaborative initiative to develop novel research techniques and conduct non-lethal research on whales in the Southern Ocean. One of SORP’s original five research projects is the Blue and Fin Whale Acoustic Trends Project which aims to implement a long term acoustic research program examining trends in Southern Ocean blue and fin whale population growth, distribution, and seasonal presence using passive acoustic monitoring techniques. Passive acoustic monitoring is a robust means of monitoring whales in remote and difficult to study areas such as the Antarctic over long time periods. Analysis of a wide range of available passive acoustic data has demonstrated spatial and temporal patterns in the occurrence of blue and fin whales in the Southern Ocean. However, the lack of overlap in years and locations monitored, and differences among instrumentation and analysis methods used, underlines the need for coordinated effort. To best exploit passive acoustic methods for monitoring purposes in the future, the SORP Acoustic Trends steering group proposes the placement and maintenance of a pan-Antarctic monitoring system with consistent spatial and temporal coverage in each of the six IWC management areas. Further, blueprints for instrument choice, hardware configurations and analysis methods are being prepared to suggest how data might be best collected and analyzed in a uniform manner to best address the specific research questions for each study species. Through a consistent multi-disciplinary approach with international collaborators, the Blue and Fin Whale Acoustic Trends Project aims to use passive acoustic recordings to measure long term distribution, seasonal occurrence, and population growth trends of fin and Antarctic blue whales in the Southern Ocean

The main issue addressed in this research is the low writing skills of primary school students. One of the reasons for this condition is that the existing model of writing literacy learning is not appropriate. The purpose of this study is to explain MID-based literacy teaching model and the impact of the model in increasing primary school students\u27 writing skills. This study used combined methods of exploratory type. The samples were elementary school students coming from six schools with three different characteristics. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that the implementation of MID-based literacy learning model has proven to signi cantly contribute to the improvement of students\u27 writing skills. Taking place in all sample schools, the improvement may suggest that the model ts not only to students with high- ability but also those with low-ability. Therefore, the MID-based literacy learning model is needed to improve the ability to write various text types appropriately

Past and present distribution, densities and movements of blue whales Balaenoptera musculus in the Southern Hemisphere and northern Indian Ocean

1Blue whale locations in the Southern Hemisphere and northern Indian Ocean were obtained from catches (303 239), sightings (4383 records of =8058 whales), strandings (103), Discovery marks (2191) and recoveries (95), and acoustic recordings.2Sighting surveys included 7 480 450 km of effort plus 14 676 days with unmeasured effort. Groups usually consisted of solitary whales (65.2%) or pairs (24.6%); larger feeding aggregations of unassociated individuals were only rarely observed. Sighting rates (groups per 1000 km from many platform types) varied by four orders of magnitude and were lowest in the waters of Brazil, South Africa, the eastern tropical Pacific, Antarctica and South Georgia; higher in the Subantarctic and Peru; and highest around Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Chile, southern Australia and south of Madagascar.3Blue whales avoid the oligotrophic central gyres of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, but are more common where phytoplankton densities are high, and where there are dynamic oceanographic processes like upwelling and frontal meandering.4Compared with historical catches, the Antarctic (‘true’) subspecies is exceedingly rare and usually concentrated closer to the summer pack ice. In summer they are found throughout the Antarctic; in winter they migrate to southern Africa (although recent sightings there are rare) and to other northerly locations (based on acoustics), although some overwinter in the Antarctic.5Pygmy blue whales are found around the Indian Ocean and from southern Australia to New Zealand. At least four groupings are evident: northern Indian Ocean, from Madagascar to the Subantarctic, Indonesia to western and southern Australia, and from New Zealand northwards to the equator. Sighting rates are typically much higher than for Antarctic blue whales.6South-east Pacific blue whales have a discrete distribution and high sighting rates compared with the Antarctic. Further work is needed to clarify their subspecific status given their distinctive genetics, acoustics and length frequencies.7Antarctic blue whales numbered 1700 (95% Bayesian interval 860–2900) in 1996 (less than 1% of original levels), but are increasing at 7.3% per annum (95% Bayesian interval 1.4–11.6%). The status of other populations in the Southern Hemisphere and northern Indian Ocean is unknown because few abundance estimates are available, but higher recent sighting rates suggest that they are less depleted than Antarctic blue whales.</li

Risk of HIV transmission to a baby occurred during pregnancy. DKK Sorong had implemented PMTCT program and given VCT-PMTCT training to health workers of primary healthcare centers. The number of pregnant women visited ANC-PMTCT clinic was 2325 women. Among them, 1.171 (50.36%) received pre testing counseling. Among women who received pre-testing counseling, 1.005 women conducted HIV1 test, and positive HIV was found in 20 women (1.99%). Objective of this study was to explain the implementation of PMTCT in the primary healthcare center (puskesmas). This was a descriptive study using qualitative method. Data were collected through in-depth interview to main informants and triangulation informants. Main informant was coordinator midwives in the puskesmas. Triangulation informants were heads of puskesmas, a head of KIA section of DKK, a head of Health Service section of DKK, and pregnant women. Data from pregnant women were collected through focus group discussion. Results of the study showed that PMTCT socialization had been done by DKK through trainings and field visits. Midwives had done socialization to pregnant women who conducted antenatal visit for the first time. Verbal socialization was conducted by giving education, and it was done in groups. Midwives from puskesmas with good PMTCT had conducted pre-test counseling, HIV testing, and post-test counseling. In the puskesmas with improper PMTCT program, midwives only explained the benefit of conducting PMTCT; they did not suggest pregnant women to do blood test. Knowledge and attitude of midwives were sufficient specifically when they gave education, socialization, and information about HIV/AIDS and PMTCT. The number of skilled workers on PMTCT and facilities were limited; specific limitation on facilities was on the availability of specific rooms for counseling and laboratory. No specific regulations related to PMTCT except National guideline on PMTCT issued by Ministry of Health was provided. There was a decree regarding PMTCT puskesmas; the implementation of this decree was done by using flowchart guideline made by puskesmas with the agreement from DKK. Support for PMTCT from the leader and colleague in the puskesmas was good. Suggestions for DKK are to allocate the budged, in stages, for PMTCT trainings for midwives who have not received training, to complete facilities especially specific rooms for counseling and laboratory. Rewards that motivate midwives and routine scheduled supervision are required. Key words : PMTCT, Puskesmas, program implementation Bibliography : 33 (1999-2012
