This thesis project begins by defining poetry; arguing that it is more than an art form, that it is an extension of self, an expression of the poet’s humanity. It discusses the poetic form, its devices and strategies, through a close analysis of several poets - Sharon Olds, Rainier Maria Rilke, Jane Mead, and even e.e. cummings, which completes the introductory section. The remaining chapters are comprised of original poetry – traditional and experimental, each labelled under the theme of clouds, with the sections representing various aspects of life. Cirrus – roaming from place to place; Cumulus - finding meaning in the world; Nimbus - what it means to be female; and finally, Cumulonimbus - satisfaction and completion

Portraiture and the construction of “charismatic leadership”

During the history of Western art, the link between portraits and status or power has been widely documented. Commissioned portraits have been traditionally the privilege of certain groups and individuals occupying positions of authority (West, 2004). The possibility of understanding portraits as a tool for what Weber has called the “routinization of charisma” offers an interesting avenue to link portraits and the field of leadership studies. This chapter aims at presenting some elements of the analysis of portraiture as a form of art that can illuminate the understanding of leadership in contemporary organizational studies. The questions inspiring this chapter include: a. How portraiture can reveal aspects of leadership in Western cultures? b. Which notions of leadership are highlighted through portraits in contemporary culture? c. What are the contributions of art history in the analysis of images of leadership

AbstractIn this paper we study in detail the relationship between fans and valuations first uncovered by Bröcker (see [2]). Our techniques are somewhat different, as our valuations are constructed by “brute force” from the properties of the fields involved. This approach has the advantage in that the valuation theory it yields can be directly related to the structure theory for spaces of orderings as developed by Murray Marshall. See [11–14]. We also discuss several applications, which include results in K-theory

Power and Place for Rural Young People

First paragraph: This chapter provides an overview of how power affects, and is mobilized by, young people in rural settings. It also reflects on the theoretical frameworks operationalized in the preceding four chapters. In this process we recognize that each of the authors has very different ways of deploying notions of power in relation to young rural lives. This is a fruitful situation since the most problematic aspect of defining power is that it has no essential materiality (though it achieves material and social effects). Consequently, different approaches to power enable different emphases to be made and a fuller picture to emerge concerning the way power weaves through young rural lives
