    Integrating architectural heritage for urban revitalization / Zalina Samadi

    The heritage awareness heightened in built heritage development in the millennium age and the research acts as personal reaction towards the issue. The design intent of this study is to unfold the treasure shop houses heritage in relation to the urban revitalization in the historical city of Taiping, Perak, Malaysia. The focus was on the shop houses which were found as the most in danger built heritage from demolition, deterioration and development pressure. The scope of study included three main research questions. Firstly, the research drive was to find the row shop houses and road for establishment of heritage area. Secondly, was to integrate architectural heritage as the antique existing treasure for urban revitalization. Thirdly, was to find the suitable design guidelines for the property conservation and revitalization .The methodology involved two main research activities: obtrusive methods and unobtrusive methods. Personal interview and survey research with focus group and public were the obtrusive methods. The unobtrusive method involved two activities: content analysis and direct observation. The research found the heritage vision weaknesses on the definition, strategies, internal support, knowledge, awareness and perception amongst the society. Individual heritage definitions and fast profit interests in the role players found as more dominant than the social benefits. The heritage management that covers technical expertise knowledge and application in heritage tourism were new ideas in Malaysia. Therefore, a guide for heritage conservation is an approach to establish the heritage area in regenerating the historical city. In the dynamic building industry, it is the role of designers to reinterpret the conservation of the past heritage while constructing for present and future heritage for more idealistic tools towards sustainable and quality urban environment

    AbstractThe main vertical components of shop houses are façade and window display. Regardless its impressively charming character, the locality of the shop houses has substantial influence. For instance the urban and heritage contextual guidelines are the existing setting for shop houses in Georgetown and Malacca. The shop owners are complying with the city manager's commercial and heritage buildings guidelines. Functionally mixed-used for shopping, working and living but personalization is the expected quality by end users. This high expectation on heritage enhancement caused heritage shop owners to a new pressure to maintain heritage aesthetical and economical balance.     This study focuses on the revitalisation performance of the outdoor ambience in between heritage streets. The heritage streets in this study is limited to an abundance of shop houses within the core zone of the historic city of the Straits of Malacca; George Town in Pulau Pinang and Melaka. The existing physical and spiritual attributes of the ‘outdoor space in between the heritage street is currently in various conditions that requires urgent monitoring system of revitalisation. The spaces have a high potential to be enhanced as ‘an urban outdoor living room’ with magnetic attraction as “a place” for promoting onstreet cultural heritage products and environment. The vibrancy of pedestrian movement of the observed study area has the regenerative potentials to create a positive aura with unique, antique and authentic ambience. Thus, the outdoor space quality reflects a high economic, environmental and social value. With this awareness, the study aims to unfold the “constructive approach” of the ambience with three main objectives. The first objective is to identify the heritage street Revitalisation Attribute (RA) and develop the Revitalisation Toolkit (RT). RA is the “construct” and RT is the “measuring tool” of the heritage street revitalisation performance (RP). The second objective is to investigate the experts’ decision-making using Expert Choice for Revitalisation Ranking (RR) of heritage streets. The highest rank street leads to the third objective which is to develop the Revitalising Strategy (RS). In terms of methodology, this study employs mixed methods of unobtrusive and obtrusive research. The unobtrusive research employs document analysis and Direct Visual Assessment (DVA) and the obtrusive research employs Focus Interview (FI) with experts in Melaka and George Town, Pulau Pinang. The findings of this research are the identification of RA, and the development of RR and RS. The research findings provide an integrated monitoring system for the identification of RA and development of toolkit for ranking and strategy towards valorising the urban outdoor quality of the heritage streets

    Outdoor space in between heritage buildings of heritage streets defines as ‘outdoor living room’. Whether it’s impressively ‘heritage’ or ‘commercially’ character; physical and socio-cultural characteristics of the streets have great influence towards eliciting on-street pedestrian model.     AbstractThis research explores issues on sustainability of Malaysian National Park (called Taman Negara), complied ecotourism approach with a balanced between economic development and preservation. With this approach, a holistic manner in managing the natural and cultural heritage of Taman Negara is expected. The objective of this paper is to relate various issues of heritage sustainability with environment-behavior. Unobtrusive observation and interviews with the locals are methods to identify the problems. Remote sensing images were taken to monitor land use changes. The expected outcome of the study is to generate a conceptual approach for developing sustainable Taman Negara as a tourist destination

    The Role of ‘Sense of Place’ in the Revitalisation of Heritage Street: George Town, Penang, Malaysia

    In revitalising heritage sites, understanding ‘sense of place’ is important as it represents a layering of histories, tangible heritage, and intangible heritage. This study examines the relationship between local communities and the cultural heritage in George Town World Heritage Site, Malaysia. Semi-structured interviews with local communities, observations and digital photo analysis were conducted. It is in the intricacies of intangible heritage practices and their authentic expression, the local communities feel attached to and claim ownership of the place. Understanding this and how it translates into the site's stewardship is critical in protecting its value, management, and ongoing revitalisation.     Melaka Streetscape Evolution: The six years journey

    The study looks at the six years changes made to the streetscape of Melaka to adapt to the requirement of a better quality of life for the occupants. The different approach to regeneration scheme of Melaka could provide insight into modern demands for the city.     Revitalization of urban public space is a mechanism to redevelop the public space area in Core Zone, George Town World Heritage Site (GTWHS) in accordance with the development growth and population. This paper discussed the factors of revitalization which are related to urban public space. The objectives of this paper are to analyze the characteristics of urban public space which could effectively be adopted for revitalisation purposes; and how to generate the public space more functional with positive influence on modern urban life.     Successful Attractions of Public Space through Users Perception

    The success of the revitalization program of urban public space is viewed through attractions that have been identified. This study aims to investigate the perception of users in public space through the on-site survey. In summary, the motivations, behavioural patterns, impressions on the public space as an attraction and the perceived importance of urban public spaces in the development of the city are important attraction for successful public space.
