    HJB equations for the optimal control of differential equations with delay in the control variable

    We study a class of optimal control problems with state constraint, where the state equation is a differential equation with delays in the control variable. This class of problems arises in some economic applications, in particular in optimal advertising problems. The optimal control problem is embedded in a suitable Hilbert space and the associated Hamilton- Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation is considered in this space. It is proved that the value function is continuous with respect to a weak norm and that it solves in the viscosity sense the associated HJB equation. The main result is the proof of a directional C1 regularity for the value function. This result represents the starting point to define a feedback map in classical sense going towards a verification theorem and the construction of optimal feedback controls for the problem

    Application of CZE Method in Routine Analysis for Determination of B-Complex Vitamins in Pharmaceutical and Veterinary Preparations

    A competitive CZE method for quality control analysis of multivitamin preparations and veterinary products containing B-group vitamins was developed. Vitamins of interest are thiamine hydrochloride (B1), thiamine monophosphate chloride (B1a), riboflavine (B2), riboflavine-5′monophosphate (B2a), nicotinamide (B3), d-pantothenic acid calcium salt (B5), pyridoxine hydrochloride (B6), folic acid (B9), and 4-aminobenzoic acid (B10). These analytes were separated optimizing the experimental conditions in 20 mM tetraborate buffer pH = 9.2 as a BGE (background electrolyte), on a Beckman P/ACE System MDQ instrument, using uncoated fused silica capillary. The effective capillary length was of 49.5 cm, I.D. = 50 μm, the applied voltage 20 kV and the temperature 25°C. Detection was performed by a diode array detector at 214 nm for all vitamins except B5 (190 nm) and B2a (260 nm). Separation time was about 9 min. After experimental conditions optimization, the proposed method was validated. Precision of migration time and corrected peak area, linearity range, LOD and LOQ, accuracy (recovery), robustness, and ruggedness were evaluated for each analyte demonstrating the good reliability of the method. Analyses of the pharmaceutical real samples were performed and confirmed the versatility of this method

    Microclimate Management for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage

    This paper presents a line of research aimed at studying in detail the interaction between air conditioning/heating systems and thermo hygrometric conditions inside museums. An experimental test was carried out on the microclimatic conditions inside a building envelope, using as case studies the interiors of the Castle of Chiaramonte in Favara (Agrigento), and the Church of Saint Matthew (Palermo). In this phase of the work the “real” measured values and the recommended “optimal” values were compared for the various museum exhibits displayed. The analysis of the complex dynamic interaction of climate conditions, the need for the museum pieces to be preserved in a situation of maximum stability, the problems regarding thermal comfort in relation to users’ enjoyment of the exhibition space, the construction model of the building envelope – the synergy between all these variables led to establishing the final design project. This consists of an air conditioning system with radiant panels, floor heating, cooling system and primary air, in which the benefits seen from an environmental and energy point of view, are fully explained. The conservation of cultural heritage collections in museums, on the one hand implies that the attentionof the specialists must turn to the prevention of the natural degradation caused through time and on the other to improve the quality of the environment. This means environmental parameters must be checked and monitoring techniques used. Since the connective tissue between the museum and its container is the environment, the building-plant system must be held responsible for the “degradation suffered by the museum itself” or “be largely responsible for its optimal conservation with the passing of time”

    Genes and primary headaches: discovering new potential therapeutic targets

    Genetic studies have clearly shown that primary headaches (migraine, tension-type headache and cluster headache) are multifactorial disorders characterized by a complex interaction between different genes and environmental factors. Genetic association studies have highlighted a potential role in the etiopathogenesis of these disorders for several genes related to vascular, neuronal and neuroendocrine functions. A potential role as a therapeutic target is now emerging for some of these genes. The main purpose of this review is to describe new advances in our knowledge regarding the role of MTHFR, KCNK18, TRPV1, TRPV3 and HCRTR genes in primary headache disorders. Involvement of these genes in primary headaches, as well as their potential role in the therapy of these disorders, will be discussed

    Food chain traceability, identification of adulterations, and the control of labeling compliance are topic that require the evaluation of the foodstuff in its entirety: in this respect, more and more researchers are investigating the possibility of using multidimensional or hyphenated techniques for the fingerprinting of the products. However, these techniques produce data structures that are multidimensional as well and that require proper chemometric approaches for data processing (multi-way data analysis). In this Chapter, the state-of-the-art approaches for the classification of multiway data will be discussed theoretically and compared on case studies coming form the food authenticity context, such as the traceability of extra virgin olive oils of protected denomination of origin and table wines
