    The seesaw portal in testable models of neutrino masses

    A Standard Model extension with two Majorana neutrinos can explain the measured neutrino masses and mixings, and also account for the matter-antimatter asymmetry in a region of parameter space that could be testable in future experiments. The testability of the model relies to some extent on its minimality. In this paper we address the possibility that the model might be extended by extra generic new physics which we parametrize in terms of a low-energy effective theory. We consider the effects of the operators of the lowest dimensionality, d=5d=5, and evaluate the upper bounds on the coefficients so that the predictions of the minimal model are robust. One of the operators gives a new production mechanism for the heavy neutrinos at LHC via higgs decays. The higgs can decay to a pair of such neutrinos that, being long-lived, leave a powerful signal of two displaced vertices. We estimate the LHC reach to this process.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figure

    The seesaw path to leptonic CP violation

    Future experiments such as SHiP and high-intensity e+ee^+ e^- colliders will have a superb sensitivity to heavy Majorana neutrinos with masses below MZM_Z. We show that the measurement of the mixing to electrons and muons of one such state could imply the discovery of leptonic CP violation in the context of seesaw models. We quantify in the minimal model the CP discovery potential of these future experiments, and demonstrate that a 5σ\sigma CL discovery of leptonic CP violation would be possible in a very significant fraction of parameter space.Comment: An error has been fixed, main conclusions unchange

    Intramural Hematoma of the Esophagus After Thrombolysis for Ischemic Stroke

    Intramural dissecting hematoma is an unusual esophageal condition with a threatening presentation but excellent prognosis when managed conservatively.We report the case of an 88-year-old woman who developed an intramural hematoma of the esophagus after intravenous thrombolysis for an acute ischemic stroke. Before thrombolysis, nasogastric intubation was attempted unsuccessfully. She was kept on nil by mouth, intravenous hydration, proton pump inhibitor, antiemetics,and an antibiotic initiated 2 days before for periodontal disease. The esophageal hematoma regressed, and she resumed oral diet asymptomatically.To our knowledge, this is the first report of this type of lesion after thrombolysis for an ischemic stroke. A brief discussion and literature review are presented

    Collimator design for a clinical brain SPECT/MRI insert

    This project's goal is to design a SPECT insert for a clinical MRI system for simultaneous brain SPECT/MR imaging. We assume the stationary SPECT insert will consist of two rings of ∼5x5-cm SiPM-based detectors insensitive to magnetic fields, with 0.8-mm intrinsic resolution. The maximum diameter is 44.5 cm, the minimum diameter is 33 cm to accommodate the patient and MRI receive/transmit coil, and the FOV has a 20 cm diameter. We have compared eight collimator designs: single-, 2x2-, 3x3- and 5+2½- pinhole, and single-, 2-, 3- and 1+2½-slit slit-slat, where ½-pinholes/slits are shared between two detectors. Analytical geometric efficiency was calculated for an activity distribution corresponding to a human brain and a target resolution of 10 mm FWHM at the centre of the FOV. Noise-free data were simulated with and without depth-of-interaction (DOI) information, and reconstructed for uniform, Defrise, Derenzo, and Zubal brain phantoms. For DOI it is assumed that the crystal's first and second half can be differentiated. Comparing the multi-pinhole and multi-slit slit-slat collimators, the former gives better reconstructed uniformity and trans-axial resolution, while the latter gives better axial resolution. Although the 2x2-pinhole and 2-slit designs give the highest sensitivities, they result in a sub-optimal utilization of the detector FOV. The best options are therefore the 5+2½-pinhole and the 1+2½-slit systems, with sensitivities of 4.9*10–4 and 4.0*10–4, respectively. The brain phantom reconstructions with multi-pinhole collimator are superior as compared to slit-slat, especially in terms of symmetry and realistic activity distribution. DOI information reduces artefacts and improves uniformity in geometric phantoms, although the difference is small for the brain phantom. These results favour a multi-pinhole configuration

    Recalcitrant Leg Ulcers as the Only Manifestation of Essential Type 2 Cryoglobulinemia

    Chronic leg ulcers are persistent conditions that might be a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, with great impact in health care costs and patients’ quality of life. We report a case of a 60-year-old woman, with long-lasting recalcitrant leg ulcers, which led to left leg amputation 10 years ago. Several attempts to heal the right leg were made, including skin grafting in three different occasions and several surgical debridements, all with unsatisfactory outcome. Some months before the ulcers began, the patient had been diagnosed with undifferentiated connective tissue disease because of arthralgia and positive antinuclear antibodies, therefore low dose systemic corticosteroids and azathioprine were prescribed. For the last 4 years she has been followed in our department and since then no evidence of clinical or laboratorial criteria for autoimmune diseases was found, thus the immunosuppressive therapy was stopped. She maintained ever since a high rheumatoid factor but without other evidence of autoimmune disease. Medical history was otherwise irrelevant. Several cutaneous biopsies were performed, with no evidence of malignancy or vasculitis. Recently, cryoglobulins became positive, with type 2b cryoglobulin identification on immunofluorescence. Serology for Hepatitis C virus was consistently negative, hence an Essential type 2 Cryoglobulinemia diagnosis was established. No renal impairment, vascular purpura, arthralgia or arthritis was found. The authors emphasize the importance of considering less common etiologies for chronic leg wounds, even in the absence of other suggestive symptomatology, as well as the pertinence of reconsidering diagnosis in highly suspect cases

    ARS leptogenesis

    We review the current status of the leptogenesis scenario originally proposed by Akhmedov, Rubakov and Smirnov (ARS). It takes place in the parametric regime where the right-handed neutrinos are at the electroweak scale or below and the CP-violating effects are induced by the coherent superposition of different right-handed mass eigenstates. Two main theoretical approaches to derive quantum kinetic equations, the Hamiltonian time evolution as well as the Closed-Time-Path technique are presented, and we discuss their relations. For scenarios with two right-handed neutrinos, we chart the viable parameter space. Both, a Bayesian analysis, that determines the most likely configurations for viable leptogenesis given different variants of flat priors, and a determination of the maximally allowed mixing between the light, mostly left-handed, and heavy, mostly right-handed, neutrino states are discussed. Rephasing invariants are shown to be a useful tool to classify and to understand various distinct contributions to ARS leptogenesis that can dominate in different parametric regimes. While these analyses are carried out for the parametric regime where initial asymmetries are generated predominantly from lepton-number conserving, but flavor violating effects, we also review the contributions from lepton-number violating operators and identify the regions of parameter space where these are relevant.Fil: Drewes, Alejandro Marcelo.
