2015 California Climate Action Planning Conference Keynote Address

In August 2015, Cal Poly’s CRP Department hosted the second Climate Action Planning Conference to discuss local, state, national and international climate issues. The keynote address was provided by then Santa Barbara County Supervisor Salud Carbajal�. His words framed the action�-oriented vision for the conference, and define much of what the CRP family continues to focus on as a part of their teaching and scholarship

Developing a library of display effects on pilot performance: Methods, meta-analyses, and performance estimates

The design of NextGen and current-day cockpit displays are critical for efficient pilot performance and situation awareness on the flight deck. Before deployment of a design into the cockpit the costs and benefits that a display design imposes on performance and situation awareness should be considered. In this thesis, a design tool was developed to support the design of NextGen displays for situation awareness and performance. This design tool is a library of pilot performance estimates. Through literature reviews and meta-analyses of empirical data, the library was developed to provide display designers 1) qualitative distinctions of display properties that either support or limit full situation awareness, and 2) quantitative performance time estimates until situation awareness as a function of various display formats. A systematic method was also developed for future augmentation of the library

Hydropower, Oil Palm, and Sustainability

This reflection touches on the writer’s experiences during the EnviroLab Asia Clinic trip in early 2016 to Borneo, Malaysia and Singapore. The reflection involves two events: a visit to a blockade protesting the construction of a hydroelectric dam and a meeting with the sustainability department of Wilmar, one of the world’s leading palm oil producers. The first event comments on the tension between the need for renewable energy and the destruction of the natural environment and communities due to the particular energy generation technology chosen. This event highlighted the importance of understanding the societal constraints a technology is being installed in. Moreover, this event made clear the opportunity developing countries have to leapfrog the problems developed countries have encountered in their energy infrastructure and define their own energy future. The second event comments on Wilmar’s improving but still lacking sustainability policy. The writer noticed a myopic focus on the origin of plantations but an ignorance of the other impacts of the palm oil industry (input resource flows, effluents etc.). This event highlighted the need to consider the product’s creation, use and disposal to construct a more lifecycle minded sustainability policy

Communication in pictures in Arab societies: political cartoons and their post-thruth

La caricatura árabe puede considerarse, desde sus inicios, como una lengua alternativa que recurre a la simbología para narrar diferentes acontecimientos. Este hecho propiciaba que la censura ejercida en estos países se rompiera, dando lugar a un medio de comunicación alternativo. Este medio se consolidó y cobró cada vez más fuerza hasta convertirse en arma propagandística que influenciaba a la sociedad al mismo tiempo que la incitaba a tomar decisiones. Por tanto, los objetivos de este trabajo son estudiar el desarrollo de la caricatura árabe, analizar cómo ésta se convirtió en un medio de comunicación y observar su impacto en la sociedad. Para llevar esto a cabo, se ha desarrollado una metodología cualitativa, en la que se ha desarrollado un método histórico que establezca un proceso de análisis y síntesis, así como también un método visual etnográfico que permita observar directamente la muestra de caricaturas seleccionadas. De este modo, los resultados y discusión que se esperan en esta investigación son mostrar como la caricatura evolucionó y acabó convirtiéndose en una forma alternativa a la narrativa oficial que pretendía ensalzar el régimen, es decir, se trata de reflejar cómo la caricatura es una opinión que se encuentra dentro de la sociedad pero que nadie se atreve a decir de manera directa. Por ello, el humor y la risa se convierten en el vehículo perfecto para hacerlo, ya que están abiertos a la libre interpretación y actúan como válvula de escape que ayuda a la sociedad a reflexionar sobre determinados acontecimientos.Political cartoons in the Arab societies are an alternative language that draws on symbols in order to analyze a different narrative. This issue broke the censorship in these countries and opened many doors to multiple interpretations. Furthermore, this artistic medium crystallized and became an extremely powerful tool that encouraged people to participated in the creative political process. As a result, the objectives that have been arisen in this research are to study the development of Arab political cartoons, to analyze how it became an alternative mass media and to observe the impact of these cartoons in Arab societies. Additionally, a qualitative research has been used to develop this research. It has been established a process of analysis and synthesis in order to analyze and codify all pieces of information that have been studied. Moreover, a ethnographic visual method has been taken into account to describe the sample of cartoons. Therefore, the results and discussion are to show how political cartoons in the Arab world have evolved and have become an alternative expression to the official narrative. That is, this research is an attempt to reflect how these cartoons are a form of hidden opinion that is held by the community. Consequently, humor and laughter become the perfect tool to do so on the grounds that they are opened to self-interpretation and act as an escape valve that helps society to represent important events

Ali Ferzat: From political cartoons in papers to political cartoons in digital media

Ali Ferzat es uno de los caricaturistas más importantes del mundo árabe. Sus caricaturas empezaron como un acto comunicativo que pretendía reivindicar los derechos que no estaban contemplados dentro del mundo árabe. Así, se convirtieron en una válvula de escape comunicativa que expresaba temas que nadie se atrevía hablar por el temor a las represalias. No obstante, la Primavera Árabe supuso una revolución, ya que permitió que irrumpieran las nuevas tecnologías como medio de comunicación. En este sentido, la caricatura se consolidó como medio debido a que su transmisión fue muy veloz, pero también se convirtió en un arte de resistencia que incitaba al activismo social. Por ello, este trabajo pretende mostrar un análisis de las caricaturas de Ali Ferzat, así como también reflejar esta evolución en el género de la caricatura que ha propiciado que se convierta en un puro acto de activismo social capaz de hacer tambalear al régimen. Con todo, se ha utilizado una metodología cualitativa que permita analizar la evolución de las caricaturas, así como también un método visual etnográfico que permita describir las caricaturas y mostrar esa evolución significativa. Por tanto, se trata de reflejar cómo la caricatura se ha consolidado como género comunicativo y medio de comunicación alternativo al entrar en contacto con los medios digitales. Pues, la caricatura es una forma de hacer reaccionar a la sociedad a través del impacto visual, por lo que se convierte en un arte de resistencia idóneo para luchar de forma activa contra el régimen.Ali Ferzat is one of the most famous cartoonists in the Arab world. His cartoons started as a communicative act which became a communicative valve of relief for society. This fact allowed people to talk about prohibited themes because people could feel fear of the reaction of the regimes. However, the Arab Spring was a revolution which permitted the society to use new technologies as a media. Consequently, political cartoons were consolidated as a media and they became an art of resistance which encouraged people to develop an important feeling of social activism. Therefore, this research is an attempt to address the issue of the analysis of Ali Ferzat’s cartoons. Additionally, this research is an study of the evolution of the genre of political cartoons that has been crystalized as an act of activism in Syria and the Arab world. As a result, a qualitative methodology has been used in this research as well as a visual ethnographic method in order to describe, analyze and contextualize Ali Ferzat’s cartoons. For this reason, the aim of this research is to study and examine the consolidation of political cartoons as a communicative genre and an alternative media thanks to the contact with digital media. Thus, political cartoons are a form of reaction of the society by using visual impact in order to fight against authoritarian regimes in a peaceful manner

Valoración de los síntomas psicosomáticos relacionados con el estrés en las Academias de Formación Vial de la provincia de Alicante

Se ha querido valorar el estrés en los aspectos fisiológicos que se genera en el profesor de Formación Vial, debido a que al desarrollar su trabajo necesariamente tiene un intercambio de información simultaneo con el medio, con el alumno, incluyendo variables internas compuesta por factores psicobiológicos, cognoscitivos y afectivos. El profesor debe interactuar con todos estos factores a la hora de ejercer su enseñanza con el alumno en la clase de práctica, y al mismo tiempo necesita estar en óptimas condiciones con unas habilidades percepto-motoras junto con sus estrategias cognitivas. Se sabe que cuando una persona genera estrés percibe situaciones como amenazantes, elaborando comportamientos fisiológicos que a largo plazo repercute en problemas de salud. En este artículo podemos observar la importancia de los sentidos en la construcción del "contrapasso". Los pecadores de gula que en vida tomaron alimentos y bebidas en desmesura, en esta cornisa están condenados a sufrir un hambre atroz. La visión del árbol cargado de frutos y de agua que no pueden tomar, incrementa el sufrimiento de las almas en la medida en que aumenta su apetito

The importance of political cartoons and graffitis as mass media in the Syrian Arab Spring.

Este artículo busca identificar, analizar y estudiar la caricatura y el grafiti como medio de comunicacion en la Primavera Árabe en Siria, en tanto que se convirtió en una herramienta que ayudó a provocar una reacción social. Este movimiento popular se carecterizó por un desarrollo artístico que se manifestó principalemente de forma directa en las calles. Hasta ese momento, estas obras revolucionarias habían sido consideradas una forma de entretenimiento que enmascaraban una serie de ideas, opiniones y actitudes que eran sostenidas por la sociedad pero que nadie se había atrevido a mostrar de forma pública. Por tanto, a raíz de dichos acontecimientos, adquirió un sentido que no había existido anteriormente. Para llevar a cabo este estudio, se ha utilizado una aproximación teórica al estado de este movimiento, basándose en una metodología cualitativa. En este contexto, se han examinado una serie de datos obtenidos mediante un proceso de codificación de las distintas fuentes primarias y secundarias, acompañado de una muestra de imágenes que han ejemplificado todo este proceso. Tras la ejecución de dicho análisis, se ha observado que tanto la caricatura como el grafiti son un medio de comucicación alternativo que permite visualizar la forma en la que se ha encontrado un nuevo medio de transmisión que, a través de internet y las redes sociales, han ayudado a provocar un gran impacto social y políticoThis research is an attempt to identify, analyze and study Arab political cartoons and graffitis as an alternative media in Syria in the Arab Spring on the grounds that this artistic expression became a tool of social reaction. This social movement was characterized by an artistic tendency which was mainly reflected on the streets in a direct style. These revolutionary arts have not been taken into account before because they have been considered a form of fun and entertainment. However, they could express opinions, ideas and attitudes that the society held, for which there was no other cultural outlet. In other words, they could provide commentary on many issues which were relevant to the public sphere. In order to develop this research, a theoretical approach has been drawn on as primary and secondary sources have been studied and analyzed. As a result, this research has been a process of collecting, coding and analyzing data to generate a theory using a good variety of images so as to exemplify this case of study. After this analysis, Arab cartoons and graffitis should be considered an alternative form of communication on the grounds that they have used a different way of transmission through the internet and social networks. For this reason, the development of this artistic movement has been able to result in political and influence society strongly, born of the fact they are able to encourage people to challenge the authorities
