Observation of Droplet Size Oscillations in a Two-Phase Fluid under Shear Flow
Experimental observations of droplet size sustained oscillations are reported
in a two-phase flow between a lamellar and a sponge phase. Under shear flow,
this system presents two different steady states made of monodisperse
multilamellar droplets, separated by a shear-thinning transition. At low and
high shear rates, the droplet size results from a balance between surface
tension and viscous stress whereas for intermediate shear rates, it becomes a
periodic function of time. A possible mechanism for such kind of oscillations
is discussed
Universal electric-field-driven resistive transition in narrow-gap Mott insulators
One of today's most exciting research frontier and challenge in condensed
matter physics is known as Mottronics, whose goal is to incorporate strong
correlation effects into the realm of electronics. In fact, taming the Mott
insulator-to-metal transition (IMT), which is driven by strong electronic
correlation effects, holds the promise of a commutation speed set by a quantum
transition, and with negligible power dissipation. In this context, one
possible route to control the Mott transition is to electrostatically dope the
systems using strong dielectrics, in FET-like devices. Another possibility is
through resistive switching, that is, to induce the insulator-to-metal
transition by strong electric pulsing. This action brings the correlated system
far from equilibrium, rendering the exact treatment of the problem a difficult
challenge. Here, we show that existing theoretical predictions of the
off-equilibrium manybody problem err by orders of magnitudes, when compared to
experiments that we performed on three prototypical narrow gap Mott systems
V2-xCrxO3, NiS2-xSex and GaTa4Se8, and which also demonstrate a striking
universality of this Mott resistive transition (MRT). We then introduce and
numerically study a model based on key theoretically known physical features of
the Mott phenomenon in the Hubbard model. We find that our model predictions
are in very good agreement with the observed universal MRT and with a
non-trivial timedelay electric pulsing experiment, which we also report. Our
study demonstrates that the MRT can be associated to a dynamically directed
avalanche
IMPACT OF A HIGH LINEAR WEIGHT POLYMER CO-CONDITIONING WITH POLYALUMINIUM CHLORIDE ON DEWATERING AND CONVECTIVE DRYING OF URBAN RESIDUAL SLUDGE
This paper investigated the influence of Polyaluminium chloride (PAX) co-conditioning with a high linear weight polymer on the dewatering performance and the drying behavior of sludge. The CT linear polymer with a high molecular weight was used combined with PAX for sludge flocculation prior to mechanical dewatering and drying.
It was found that sludge conditioned with the couple PAX/ CT led to better flocculation/dewatering process regarding size flocs and specific resistance to filtration.
Concerning drying, it appeared that this chemicals combination led to improved drying rates with effect of a reduction of the drying time, when compared to polyelectrolyte used without PAX adding

long des mesures.
Understanding nitrogen transfer dynamics in a small agricultural catchment: Comparison of a distributed (TNT2) and a semi distributed (SWAT) modeling approaches
The coupling of an hydrological and a crop model is an efficient approach to study the impact of the interactions between agricultural practices and catchment physical characteristics on stream water quality. We analyzed the consequences of using different modeling approaches of the processes controlling the nitrogen (N) dynamics in a small agricultural catchment monitored for 15 years. Two agro-hydrological models were applied: the fully distributed model TNT2 and the semi-distributed SWAT model. Using the same input dataset, the calibration process aimed at reproducing the same annual water and N balance in both models, to compare the spatial and temporal variability of the main N processes. The models simulated different seasonal cycles for soil N. The main processes involved were N mineralization and denitrification. TNT2 simulated marked seasonal variations with a net increase of mineralization in autumn, after a transient immobilization phase due to the burying of the straw with low C:N ratio. SWAT predicted a steady humus mineralization with an increase when straws are buried and a decrease afterwards. Denitrification was mainly occuring in autumn in TNT2 because of the dynamics of N availability in soil and of the climatic and hydrological conditions. SWAT predicts denitrification in winter, when mineral N is available in soil layers. The spatial distribution of these two processes was different as well: less denitrification in bottom land and close to ditches in TNT2, as a result of N transfer dynamics. Both models simulate correctly global trend and inter-annual variability of N losses in small agricultural catchment when a sufficient amount data is available for calibration. However, N processes and their spatial interactions are simulated very differently, in particular soil mineralization and denitrification. The use of such tools for prediction must be considered with care, unless a proper calibration and validation of the different N processes is carried out
Generating Referring Expressions in Multimodal Contexts
International audienceThis paper adresses the need of structuring the global context set into subsets or domains in order to explain adequately the use of referring expressions in a multimodal corpus. We underline, in particular, the importance of taking into account not only the discourse, but also perception and gestures for the construction of these domains. We propose a unified context model where the context is built up dynamically from different information sources and show that this way of context modelling predicts correctly the use of referring expressions in a corpus of instructional dialogues
Reference Resolution within the Framework of Cognitive Grammar
International audienceFollowing the principles of Cognitive Grammar, we concentrate on a model for reference resolution that attempts to overcome the difficulties previous approaches, based on the fundamental assumption that all reference (independent on the type of the referring expression) is accomplished via access to and restructuring of domains of reference rather than by direct linkage to the entities themselves. The model accounts for entities not explicitly mentioned but understood in a discourse, and enables exploitation of discursive and perceptual context to limit the set of potential referents for a given referring expression. As the most important feature, we note that a single mechanism is required to handle what are typically treated as diverse phenomena. Our approach, then, provides a fresh perspective on the relations between Cognitive Grammar and the problem of reference
