    Clay Composites by In Situ Polymerization of Ionic Liquid-Based Dispersions

    Flexible composite materials were prepared by in situ copolymerization of ionic liquid like monomers-namely 1-vinyl-3- ethyl imidazolium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (M1) and 1-(2-acryloyloxyundecyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide (M2) that were cross-linked with 1,1 '-octane-1,8-diylbis(3-vinyl imidazolium) di[bis(trifluoromethane)sulfonimide] (CL). Mixtures of polymerizable ionic liquids were used to disperse organo-modified montmorillonite clay as a filler. Polymerization of the mixtures resulted in copolymer composites. The glass transition temperature of the composites could be tuned in the range of -2-127 degrees C by varying the ratio of the ionic liquid monomers M1 and M2, which is presented in the article for the first time along with its homopolymer. The mechanical properties were significantly enhanced by using a copolymer matrix instead of either of the respective homopolymers. The toughest M1-M2 copolymer composite exhibited a toughness of 5.3 +/- 1.4 MPa, while the toughnesses of corresponding poly(M1) and poly(M2) films were 0.6 +/- 0.2 and 0.5 +/- 0.003 MPa, respectively. The composite could be filled uniformly with large amounts of montmorillonite clay. The copolymer matrix was able to take up large amounts of clay while still exhibiting mechanical properties that surpassed the unfilled matrix.Peer reviewe

    Roughness and multiscaling of planar crack fronts

    We consider numerically the roughness of a planar crack front within the long-range elastic string model, with a tunable disorder correlation length ξ\xi. The problem is shown to have two important length scales, ξ\xi and the Larkin length LcL_c. Multiscaling of the crack front is observed for scales below ξ\xi, provided that the disorder is strong enough. The asymptotic scaling with a roughness exponent ζ0.39\zeta \approx 0.39 is recovered for scales larger than both ξ\xi and LcL_c. If Lc>ξL_c > \xi, these regimes are separated by a third regime characterized by the Larkin exponent ζL0.5\zeta_L \approx 0.5.     Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with bone-patellar tendon-bone autograft versus allograft in young patients

    Objectives: Traditionally, bone-patella tendon-bone (BTB) autograft has been the gold standard graft choice for younger, athletic patients requiring ACL reconstruction. However, donor site morbidity, post-operative patella fracture, and increased operative time have led many surgeons to choose BTB allograft for their reconstructions. Opponents of allografts feel that slower healing time, higher rate of graft failure, and potential for disease transmission makes them undesirable graft choices in athletic patients. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical outcomes, both subjective and objective, of young patients that who have undergone either BTB autograft or allograft reconstructions with a minimum of 2-year follow-up. Methods: One hundred and twenty patients (60 autograft, 60 allograft), age 25 and below at time of surgery, were contacted after being retrospectively identified as patients having an ACL reconstruction with either a BTB allograft or autograft by one senior surgeon. Patients were administered the Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale and IKDC Subjective Knee Evaluation questionnaires. Fifty (25 BTB autograft and 25 BTB allograft) of the 120 returned for physical examination as well as completion of a single leg hop test and laxity evaluation using a KT-1000 arthrometer evaluation. Of the 120 patients contacted, there were a total of 7 failures (5.8%) requiring revision, 6 in the allograft group (86%) and 1 in the autograft group (14%). Results: The average Lysholm scores were 89.0 and 89.56 and the average IKDC scores were 90.8 and 92.1 in the autograft and allograft groups respectively. The differences in the Lysholm scores and the IKDC scores were not significant. The single leg hop and KT-1000 scores were also not significantly different. One autograft patient had a minor motion deficit. Three allograft patients had a grade 1 Lachman and pivot glide. One autograft patient and two allograft patients had mild patellafemoral crepitus. There was no significant difference in anterior knee pain between the two groups Conclusion: There is no significant difference in patient-rated outcome between ACL reconstructions using BTB autografts versus allografts. However, the overall study group did reveal an increased failure rate requiring revision in the allograft group. © The Author(s) 2015

    Dopamine D_2-receptor activation elicits akinesia, rigidity, catalepsy, and tremor in mice expressing hypersensitive 4 nicotinic receptors via a cholinergic-dependent mechanism

    Recent studies suggest that high-affinity neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) containing α4 and β2 subunits (α4β2*) functionally interact with G-protein-coupled dopamine (DA) D_2 receptors in basal ganglia. We hypothesized that if a functional interaction between these receptors exists, then mice expressing an M2 point mutation (Leu9'Ala) rendering 4 nAChRs hypersensitive to ACh may exhibit altered sensitivity to a D_2-receptor agonist. When challenged with the D_(2)R agonist, quinpirole (0.5–10 mg/kg), Leu9'Ala mice, but not wild-type (WT) littermates, developed severe, reversible motor impairment characterized by rigidity, catalepsy, akinesia, and tremor. While striatal DA tissue content, baseline release, and quinpirole-induced DA depletion did not differ between Leu9'Ala and WT mice, quinpirole dramatically increased activity of cholinergic striatal interneurons only in mutant animals, as measured by increased c-Fos expression in choline acetyltransferase (ChAT)-positive interneurons. Highlighting the importance of the cholinergic system in this mouse model, inhibiting the effects of ACh by blocking muscarinic receptors, or by selectively activating hypersensitive nAChRs with nicotine, rescued motor symptoms. This novel mouse model mimics the imbalance between striatal DA/ACh function associated with severe motor impairment in disorders such as Parkinson’s disease, and the data suggest that a D_(2)R–α4*-nAChR functional interaction regulates cholinergic interneuron activity.—Zhao-Shea, R., Cohen, B.     Sex-Dependent Improvement in Survival of Parkinson's Disease Patients

    Background Advances in the treatment of Parkinson's disease (PD) and changes in general life expectancy may have improved survival in patients with PD. Objective The objective of this study was to investigate recent trends in PD mortality. Methods In total, 1521 patients with PD in local and national registries were followed for 11 years (2006-2016) from diagnosis until exit date or death, and the causes of death were recorded. Results The survival of men with PD improved during the follow-up period, but no change was observed in women (2-year postdiagnosis survival in men, 79.0%-86.3%, P = 0.03; 2-year postdiagnosis survival in women, 82.8%-87.5%, P = 0.42). Pneumonia was the most common immediate cause of death. Discussion The survival of men with PD has improved in Finland without a similar change in women. Because changes in treatment likely affect both sexes similarly, the results may reflect the decreasing sex gap in life expectancy. This phenomenon will likely increase the already high male-to-female prevalence ratio of PD.Peer reviewe

    Cell cycle regulators p27 and pRb in lymphomas – correlation with histology and proliferative activity

    The cell cycle is a complex event in which multiple regulator-proteins participate. The G 1/S checkpoint of the cell cycle is controlled by pRb protein, which functions in its hypophosphorylated form as a negative regulator of growth. p27 (Kip1), a member of CIP/KIP family of cyclin inhibitory proteins, participates in inhibition of forming complexes that allow pRb to phosphorylate and lead the cell into mitosis. The expression of these important cell cycle regulator proteins was studied in a total of 96 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) samples, which were classified according to the REAL classification. The expression of p27, pRb and the cell proliferation marker Ki-67 (MIB-1) was evaluated in lymphomas using immunohistochemistry. This study showed that there were coordinate changes in the expression of p27 and pRb in NHL. When compared to low-grade lymphomas, high-grade lymphomas showed significantly reduced expression of p27 and inversely pRb expression was increased (P < 0.001). Increase in expression of Ki-67 was parallel with pRb expression, and was mainly seen in cells that lacked p27 expression (P < 0.0001). This study suggests that changes in the control of the cell cycle closely relate to the pathobiology of NHL. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig

    Radiation-associated sarcoma after breast cancer in a nationwide population : Increasing risk of angiosarcoma

    Radiation-associated sarcoma (RAS) is a rare complication of radiation therapy (RT) to breast cancer (BC). This study explored RAS after RT to BC in a nationwide population-based material. The Finnish Cancer Registry was queried for patients with BC treated during 1953-2014 who were later diagnosed with a secondary sarcoma in 1953-2014. Registry data, patient files, and sarcoma specimens were analyzed to confirm diagnosis and location of RAS at or close to the RT target volume. A total of 132 512 patients were diagnosed with invasive BC during the study period. A subsequent sarcoma was diagnosed in 355 patients. After exclusion, 96 RAS were identified. Angiosarcoma (AS) was the most prevalent histology in 50 (52%) of 96 patients. However, the first radiation-associated AS was diagnosed in a patient treated for BC with breast-conserving surgery in 1984, and thereafter, the proportion of AS continuously increased. The 5-year sarcoma-specific survival was 75.1% for RAS treated with a curative intent. The distribution of histologic subtypes of RAS has changed during the 60 years of this registry study. The first radiation-associated AS was diagnosed in 1989, and presently, AS is the most common histologic subtype of RAS. It is possible that changes in BC treatment strategies are influencing the characteristics of RAS.Peer reviewe
