    Get PDF
The main objective of this paper was to review the design considerations and challenges for offsite construction plant in Auckland. The goal is to provide the reasons for selecting the design criteria. For this the production plants Willmot Dixon in UK, CRC in Australia and Fletcher in New Zealand were considered. This plant can be used for products in residential buildings, hospitals, educational buildings and commercial buildings using Lightweight steel and timber framing, Factory assembled bathrooms (FABs) or pods, Cross-laminated timber and Prefabricated and precast concrete. The four design communication alternatives for an offsite production plant based on the requirements for adaptability, efficiency in assembly and production economy are explained according to the needs. The main urban challenges which were faced by Auckland for offsite production plant like speed of construction, cost, waste materials, machines and workers are reviewed using the method of engineering called Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) by which the production costs and the time for products to reach the market are reviewed. It is responsible for bringing people into the Organization, helping them carry out their work, pay off them for their labors, and solving problems that arise. There are seven management functions of a human resources (HR) department that will be specifically addressed: staffing, performance appraisals, compensation and benefits, training and development, employee and labor relations, safety and health, and human resource research. The organizations should focus, promote and endorse the effective use of HR policies for the enhancement of pace of Organizational performance. The management of performance can often involve tough decisions such as choosing who to let go, who to promote and who to hire. Keeping the decision making process behind closed doors is an ethical practice that breeds the least amount of contention possible. Body focused repetitive behaviors are frequently seen in individuals with obsessive compulsive disorders. These behaviors range from repetitive hand washing to more severe forms such as onychophagia. We report a case of severe onychophagia wherein the patient despite receiving pharmacological treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder was unable to control her impulse to compulsively bite her nails. Repetitive nail biting led to the patient being treated for bacterial infections, debridement and subsequent digital amputations. Cases of severe onychophagia are seldom seen in clinical practice therefore an awareness regarding early identification of the signs and symptoms and up to date management are crucial for practicing clinicians. As illustrated in this case report, pharmacotherapy as well as intense psychotherapy is essential for the long-term effective management of this chronic ailment that can gravely affect the quality of an individual's life

An Undergraduate forensic biochemistry laboratory experiment to detect doping in animal hair using LCMS

    Get PDF
Doping using performance enhancing banned substances is a serious problem in almost every sport competition. Not surprisingly, the detection of these contra banned drugs is an area of active and continuous improvement and innovation by bioanalytical chemists. Additionally, most students working out in the gym and taking part in various sports need to be made aware of the doping and the health problems associated with it. Science or STEM students, in particular chemistry students, must not only be made aware of these issues, but also be taught that chemistry (and science) can provide solutions to such real-life issues. To this end, a newly developed forensic laboratory experiment is described that guides students to learn liquid chromatography mass spectrometry instrumentation (LC-MS) to detect four common doping drugs cortisol, dexamethasone, methyl prednisolone and flumethasone in camel hair samples. In addition, the project is also designed to reinforce the importance of hair analysis as an additional sample matrix, complementary to saliva, blood and urine tests, in doping applications. In addition to learning various aspects of sample preparation, extraction, and LC-MS principles, students will also learn how to validate this method according to Food and Drugs Administration guidelines for intra and inter day precision and accuracy, recovery, stability and linearity. This “applied forensic science” experiment was successfully implemented in a biochemistry undergraduate research course to enhance students\u27 learning of doping issues as well as important bio-analytical and forensic biochemistry concepts. Student survey confirmed that this laboratory experiment was successful in achieving the objectives of raising awareness of doping control in students and illustrating the usefulness of chemistry in solving real-life problems. This experiment can be easily adopted in an advanced biochemistry laboratory course and taught as an inquiry-guided exercise. Such hands-on and engaging experiments should be part of undergraduate curriculum to foster deeper interest and innovation in STEM subjects to better prepare the next-generation workforce in science and technology

This paper investigates the effect of using data projector in teaching "The methodology of English Language" course on the achievement of male students at Baghdad University in the 2018-2019 academic year. The sample of the study constituted 195 students who registered for the course. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used for analysing participants' results. The results of the study indicated that all the study sample results were homogeneous and that there is a statistical difference in the students' achievement in a test in favour of the experimental group

Monetary Policy and Asset Price Channel: Recommendations for the Policy Makers of Developing Countries

    Get PDF
Given the lack of strong institutional framework and relatively unstable political situation in developing countries, it is very essential to come up with a different and suitable monetary policy for those countries. A longstanding macroeconomic issue is how monetary policy affects the real economy. Asset price channel is one of the most important channels of monetary transmission mechanism. In this study, we explored the asset price channel of monetary transmission mechanism in a developing country’s setup. We carried out our analysis in the framework of Vector Auto Regression while taking account of all the limitations of time series data. Our benchmark model accounts for simultaneity and interdependence among variables. We tested for both short and long term relationships. Our data set contains quarterly data for twenty years. We applied Johansen Co integration test, Vector Error Correction Model and Granger causality. We came across some puzzling and alarming results.  Our analysis reveals that stock prices have a negative long run relationship with investment and output while it is generally expected that a tight monetary policy is linked with decrease in prices.  This kind of puzzling results should be taken into consideration by the central bank. Further, the analysis of the long term relationship between investment and other variables reveal that there is negative long run relationship between investment and interest rate; therefore, the central bank should be cautious while taking monetary policy actions. Interest rate is not causing any of the variables included in the asset price channel which means that interest rate is a weak policy tool as for as its effect in the asset price channel is concerned. This research was aimed at figuring out the meanings, their various forms, their intended sense used in pride and prejudice by Jane Austen. The data were collected through certain procedures focused on the theory of relevance. The utterances in dialogs which contain implications were selected and determined to be analyzed. Certain procedures were presented and defined used to analyze the data based on ‘Relevance theory’; which involves not only encoding and decoding messages through communication but also various other elements, comprising inference and context. Analyses and findings of the study reveal that there were 60 implications were distributed into strong and weak forms. As a follow-up, the study was performed to the second-semester students of the Baghdad University Graduate Program, resulting in no substantial correlation between the awareness of implications and significance theory of the respondents and their success in evaluating implications using the p-value hypothesis of 0.406 (p-value > 0.05)

Arms Race, Economic Growth, and Government (Military and Non Military) Expenditure: Empirical Investigation for India and Pakistan

    Get PDF
This study examines the relationship of economic growth with civilian and military portions of government expenditure for two neighboring countries and nuclear powers; India and Pakistan. Considering the rough bilateral relationship between the two countries, the paper also seeks to determine the existence of arms race between them. For this purpose, Johansen cointegration and Granger causality tests are applied while taking account of the limitations of time series data.  Our cointegration results indicate a positive impact of military spending on economic growth for India and a negative impact for Pakistan. In case of government civilian expenditure and economic growth, the relationship is statistically insignificant for Pakistan while it is negative and significant for India. The Granger causality results show lack of any causal relationship of economic growth with government and military spending for Pakistan. In case of India, economic growth is Granger caused by government as well as military expenditure. Bidirectional causality is found between defense spending of India and defense spending of Pakistan.
