This study investigated the levels of motivation, job satisfaction and job performance of library personnel in government and privately-owned universities in North-Central, Nigeria. Three research questions were raised. Survey research method was employed. The study covers six states, namely Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau States and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja. Survey method tested the relationships among variables thereby making generalizations about the library phenomenon. The target population for the study consisted of librarians and library officers in fully-operational universities in North-Central Nigeria. The entire population of librarians and library officers were adopted. Two sets of modified instruments: Motivational Factors Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (MFJSQ) and Job Performance Questionnaire (JPQ) were used for data collection. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the responses from the respondents. Above all, descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation was used to answer the three research questions on the levels of motivation, job satisfaction and job performance of library personnel. Findings showed moderate level of motivation and job satisfaction respectively while there was high level of job performance of library personnel. The study recommended that the management of universities in the North-Central Nigeria should take note of the following areas: adequate job design, description and employees’ participation in decision making/leadership training, recognition and in-service training programme for library personnel. Other recommendation include: encouragement for library personnel to enhance job commitment and to be more predispose to critical thinking in order to be able to solve library related problems

The philosophy, orientation and nature of public library are routed in the responsibility of disseminating diverse and current information services to the members of its community. Waller and Mcshare (2008) posit two major challenges in the provision and use of public library services which are; lack of obtaining a thorough understanding of the nature of the environment which bothers majorly on information provision and use; and the development of policy frameworks that clarifies institutions goals and brings coherence to diverse and sometimes conflicting policy demands. This paper looks at issues and trends concerning some of the challenges bedeviling the provision and utilisation of public library services in Nigeria such as in-appropriate policies, lack of sufficient professionals, inadequate facilities and services and lack of awareness and proper understanding of the concept of public library services which led to non-use of the available services by potential users. Yield shift theory of satisfaction phenomena was used to explain the satisfaction phenomenon of public library services by users. Identified challenges were discussed and recommendations made towards developing a framework for improved public library services in Nigeria

Information plays a vital role in agricultural production, it is believed to be the foundation for improved agriculture. To improve agriculture, access and use of information is required. This study investigated the access to and use of library and internet by agricultural extension workers and academics as information source. Shannon and Weaver model theory was used to underpin the study. Purposive sampling was used to select three local municipalities within King Cetshwayo District of KwaZulu-Natal Province in South Africa. Quantitative technique was adopted with self-administered structured questionnaire. Convenience sampling technique was adopted to select 60 extension workers in three offices of the department of agriculture located in Eshowe, Melmoth and Ngwelezane and 9 academics from department of agriculture, University of Zululand, making the total number of the study participants sixty-nine (69). Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) software was used to analyse data collected. Findings revealed that internet facilities are not adequate in agricultural department offices located in the rural areas, thereby, led to minimal use of internet.; Academics regular access to internet led to regular use of internet. Also, Academics had high access to library but low use of library. Most extension workers do not have access to library, thereby, they hardly use library for information source. The study recommends that effort should be made to train, especially the old extension workers on the use of internet for agricultural information source. Use of library should be encouraged among academics and extension workers

Diversified opinions on the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccine have necessitated investigation on the pharmacovigilance strategies used to manage COVID-19 vaccine information and perception of health information managers. Narrative research design was adopted while structured interview was used to collect data from respondents and qualitative data analysis technique was employed. Total enumeration was adopted to gather data from eight (8) purposively selected health information managers in the Ministry of Health, Kwara State. The study revealed that majority of the respondents are aware of pharmacovigilance and COVID-19 vaccine information are managed through WHO guideline. Virtual meetings, emergency preparedness and response are some opportunities provided for COVID-19 vaccines information management. Vaccine hesitancy, non-compliance to usage-regulations, misinformation and overwhelmed facility were identified as challenges with acceptance of the vaccine. The study thus recommended that pharmacovigilance be enhanced among health information managers using advance information management technology

No Abstract. The paper discusses the emerging trends in both the profession and practice of modern-day librarianship; recognizing that at the core of the information profession today are those saddled with the responsibility of managing the acquisition, organization and dissemination of information to an identifiable group of users. It traces the origin of library and information science education in Nigeria, underscoring the apparent proliferation and its implications. It observes the trend in library and information science practice whereby the advent of new technologies has had a tremendous impact on the traditional service delivery; leading to some fundamental issues. These were discussed in relation to certain fundamental implications for the Nigerian library schools where future professionals are being trained. The Information Technologist Vol. 2(2) 2005: 88-9

Heterogeneous Ensemble with Combined Dimensionality Reduction for Social Spam Detection

    No full text
This study presents a novel framework based on a heterogeneous ensemble method and a hybrid dimensionality reduction technique for spam detection in micro-blogging social networks. A hybrid of Information Gain (IG) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) (dimensionality reduction) was implemented for the selection of important features and a heterogeneous ensemble consisting of Naïve Bayes (NB), K Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Logistic Regression (LR) and Repeated Incremental Pruning to Produce Error Reduction (RIPPER) classifiers based on Average of Probabilities (AOP) was used for spam detection. The proposed framework was applied on MPI_SWS and SAC’13 Tip spam datasets and the developed models were evaluated based on accuracy, precision, recall, f-measure, and area under the curve (AUC). From the experimental results, the proposed framework (that is, Ensemble + IG + PCA) outperformed other experimented methods on studied spam datasets. Specifically, the proposed method had an average accuracy value of 87.5%, an average precision score of 0.877, an average recall value of 0.845, an average F-measure value of 0.872 and an average AUC value of 0.943. Also, the proposed method had better performance than some existing methods. Consequently, this study has shown that addressing high dimensionality in spam datasets, in this case, a hybrid of IG and PCA with a heterogeneous ensemble method can produce a more effective method for detecting spam contents

SARS-CoV-2 vaccination modelling for safe surgery to save lives: data from an international prospective cohort study

    No full text
Background: Preoperative SARS-CoV-2 vaccination could support safer elective surgery. Vaccine numbers are limited so this study aimed to inform their prioritization by modelling. Methods: The primary outcome was the number needed to vaccinate (NNV) to prevent one COVID-19-related death in 1 year. NNVs were based on postoperative SARS-CoV-2 rates and mortality in an international cohort study (surgical patients), and community SARS-CoV-2 incidence and case fatality data (general population). NNV estimates were stratified by age (18-49, 50-69, 70 or more years) and type of surgery. Best- and worst-case scenarios were used to describe uncertainty. Results: NNVs were more favourable in surgical patients than the general population. The most favourable NNVs were in patients aged 70 years or more needing cancer surgery (351; best case 196, worst case 816) or non-cancer surgery (733; best case 407, worst case 1664). Both exceeded the NNV in the general population (1840; best case 1196, worst case 3066). NNVs for surgical patients remained favourable at a range of SARS-CoV-2 incidence rates in sensitivity analysis modelling. Globally, prioritizing preoperative vaccination of patients needing elective surgery ahead of the general population could prevent an additional 58 687 (best case 115 007, worst case 20 177) COVID-19-related deaths in 1 year. Conclusion: As global roll out of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination proceeds, patients needing elective surgery should be prioritized ahead of the general population
