Jesús Campos’ Playwriting and the Andalusian Legacy. Reflection on the Exchange of two Cultures through La Cabeza del Diablo

Jesús Campos García, the author of La Cabeza del diablo, devotes his creative effort to recover the historical elements which were crucial in defining the present-day Europe, and the cultural exchange between both sides of the Mediterranean Sea. This play is imbued with Al-Andalus Arabic cultural essences to explain how they were brought into Europe. It’s a well-documented fiction play which shows the contact between the two main cultures at that time: Arabic and Christian, with an important Jewish presence. La Cabeza del Diablo is the head of wisdom, the man with a bird’s head, a reference to the Egyptian god Thoth. But at the end it is related to dreams, madness, the hero Gerberto’s thirst for power. In order to understand this play we must place it in the context of the present-day scenario, we must translate it into the contemporary expression of the facts and feelings raised in the pla

Leadership style, organisational culture and disputes in public construction

The increasing occurrence of construction disputes has compounded the fragmentation, complexity and adversarial nature of the construction industry. Disputes are associated with high cost, delays, low quality and even the destruction of important relationships among project parties that have taken long years to build and disputes have become ‘the rule rather than the exception’. Despite considerable attempts in literature towards dispute minimization in construction projects, very few studies have addressed the roots behind the occurrence of disputes. Leadership and organisational culture are key influential factors in the construction industry. Effective project leaders should, not only achieve the goals and objectives of the organisations they lead, but also, minimize conflicts and disputes. Also by instilling strong organisational culture, construction organisations can control dispute to minimum levels. Therefore, this study aims to draw research attention toward the core of disputes by providing theoretical insight and empirical investigation concerning the roots of this problem. A framework is presented to minimize disputes in public organisations of construction. The mixed methodology adopted includes a survey conducted to investigate the current practice and semi-structured interviews to explore best practice that combined to form a foundation for the framework that assess leaders and organisations to minimize construction disputes. The findings revealed that among the most significant dispute causes are: delay by the contractor, lack of team spirit, slow contractor response, poor communication, unrealistic tendering, inadequate contractor selection, unforeseen site conditions and inadequate site supervision. Significant correlations were noted between transformational leadership and the most significant dispute causes. Also significant association was indicated between clan culture and disputes. Emerging from the study is that transformational leadership and clan culture appear to be the most suitable leadership style and organisational culture, respectively, in public construction organisations (owner organisations) that help minimize disputes with contractors

THE EFFECT OF EVOO IN REDUCING ICAM-1 AND INCREASING e-NOS IN HIGH FAT DIET RATS

Background: High fat diet (HFD) induces low chronic inflammation andsubsequently leads to the development of endothelial dysfunctions, which are considered as the first pathological symptom of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is marked by increasing sICAM-1 and decreasing eNOS levels, which both of them released by endothelial cells. Consuming EVOO having anti-inflammation effect may retain normal endothelial functions. This study therefore aimed to prove the effect of EVOO in maintaining endothelial cells of wistar rats during HFD consumption. Methods: A randomized post-test only control group design was performed on wistar rats, which were divided into 5 groups, every group consists of 6 rats. Negative and positive control groups received normal diet and HFD, respectively. Three treated groups received combination of HFD and EVOO in different dose (1ml, 2ml, and 3ml/kg BW/day, respectively) for period of 60 days. Serum ICAM-1 and eNOS levels were measured using ELISA method. Results: No significant different of ICAM-1 levels (ANOVA test; p=0.202), but significant different of eNOS levels were observed among all groups studied (ANOVA test; p=0.001). Further analysis proved that the eNOS levels of positive controls (mean ± SD; 0.32±0.14 ng/ml) were significantly lower than those of negative controls (0.72±0.32; p=0.006) and group of HFD rats receiving EVOO in dose of 3ml/kg BW/day (1.01±0.45; p=0.022). Post Hoc tests of serum eNOS levels between other groups were not significantly different. Conclusions: The result of this study indicates that all conducted treatments have no effect on ICAM-1 levels. Unlike EVOO (3ml/kg BW/day) able to improve eNOS levels of HFD rats.
