Discussions about language awareness (LA) in linguistics and language pedagogy may frequently give the impression that the notion of LA serves as a universal passe-partout for any issue related to the learning and teaching of languages. The situation is further complicated by the fact that there are hardly any practical applications of academic knowledge about LA. To tackle this deficit, the article introduces the methodological notion of "Educational Landscaping” (EL) that is designed to improve teacher language awareness. In the first stage of EL, academic findings about language acquisition and about the linguistic landscape of educational institutions are presented to teachers and discussed with them. In the second stage, teachers themselves investigate, analyze and, if necessary, adapt the linguistic landscape of their respective institution. The article proceeds by first discussing the concept of language awareness. Then, based on research on LA and the possibilities of advancing it, the different methodological steps of EL are presented. On the basis of a qualitative-explorative interview study, the article describes the results achieved through the implementation of EL and discusses them with respect to LA. It is argued that in a number of cases, EL was able to spark considerable improvements in teacher language awareness

Characterization of greater middle eastern genetic variation for enhanced disease gene discovery

The Greater Middle East (GME) has been a central hub of human migration and population admixture. The tradition of consanguinity, variably practiced in the Persian Gulf region, North Africa, and Central Asia1-3, has resulted in an elevated burden of recessive disease4. Here we generated a whole-exome GME variome from 1,111 unrelated subjects. We detected substantial diversity and admixture in continental and subregional populations, corresponding to several ancient founder populations with little evidence of bottlenecks. Measured consanguinity rates were an order of magnitude above those in other sampled populations, and the GME population exhibited an increased burden of runs of homozygosity (ROHs) but showed no evidence for reduced burden of deleterious variation due to classically theorized ‘genetic purging’. Applying this database to unsolved recessive conditions in the GME population reduced the number of potential disease-causing variants by four- to sevenfold. These results show variegated genetic architecture in GME populations and support future human genetic discoveries in Mendelian and population genetics

In order to enhance awareness and promote registry for inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) in Egypt, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence and main clinical findings of IEMs detectable by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) among high risk pediatric patients presenting to our tertiary care facility at Cairo University Children's Hospital over a period of 5 years and to compare the disease burden in Egypt in the absence of a national screening program for inherited metabolic disorders with other populations.status: publishe
