Not Yet Legal and in Prison?

    Get PDF
The United States is the only industrialized country that sentences individuals to spend the remainder of their lives in prison for a crime they committed before the age of eighteen. The justice system established the sentencing of juveniles to life in prison without the possibility of parole to deter juvenile delinquency. Life without parole was regarded as an appropriate punishment following the rise of juvenile crime during the 1980s and 1990s. However, as psychological differences between juveniles and adults became more prominent, society began to regard life without the possibility of parole as a cruel and unusual punishment. Although some juveniles commit heinous crimes that warrant a life in prison, others receive the same punishment for a crime that does not merit a punishment of this extent

Minimum Education Requirements for Crime Scene Investigators

    Get PDF
The initial crime scene investigation is critical since it is the primary step in the investigative process; therefore, individuals assigned to process a scene should be highly educated. Improperly educated (or uneducated) crime scene investigators (CSIs) can mishandle evidence during an investigation, affecting the outcome of cases. The minimum education requirement for CSIs should transition from a high school diploma—the current requirement—toward a bachelor’s degree. The importance of acquiring a college-level education is observed in a study conducted on crime scene examiners in Australia. To determine the educational requirement for CSIs in the United States, information was gathered electronically from numerous law enforcement departments. The most common entry-level education was a high school diploma, followed by an associate’s degree, and lastly, a bachelor’s degree. A bachelor’s degree, with coursework specifically intended for individuals not wanting to work in a laboratory, will ensure CSIs are well equipped to correctly perform their duties

ETAA1 activates the master checkpoint kinase ATR. Bass and Cortez (2019. J. Cell Biol. https://doi.org/10.1083/jcb.201810058) recently reported an intra-mitotic function of ETAA1 that safeguards chromosome stability. In this issue, Achuthankutty et al. (2019. J. Cell Biol. https://doi.org/10.1083/jcb.201905064) describe a mechanism controlling the ATR-activating potential of ETAA1 in S phase to preserve chromosome stability.

Levy flight as a robotic search pattern

    Get PDF
Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2012.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 23-24).Levy flights have been recently found to approximate the trajectories of animal foragers in their search for resources and food. Levy flights have proved to be effective in searching tasks because of their characteristic combination of long trajectories followed by bursts of short trajectories. In addition, some developments in robotics are currently geared toward robot miniaturization and mimicry of living creatures. For example, robots based on the features of hummingbirds and bees have already been developed though they are not yet autonomous. Incorporating Levy flight searching strategies into these miniaturized robots could yield more efficient and effective searching machines.by Orlando Saldivar.S.B

Reconciling the Past: Language Validation in a First-Year Experience Course at a Border

    Get PDF
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) has made part of its mission to become a bilingual, bicultural, and biliterate public institution. Established in 2015 on two legacy institutions, The University of Texas-Pan American and The University of Texas Brownsville, it must reconcile a past that was not always welcoming of its students’ bilingualism. This article examines one instructor’s experience taking one of the university’s signature first-year experience courses and creating a class that is welcoming and supportive of the students’ bilingualism while also reconciling his own educational experiences with language

Mapping borderlands horror: Tales in terror, trauma, and Latinx immigrant experiences in recent fiction

    Get PDF
This thesis explores how Chicana/o cultural producers redeploy conventions of horror in order to explore the lived experiences of Latinx, particularly in South Texas. To do so, I will examine texts such as Sandra Cisneros\u27s classic 1992 short story Woman Hollering Creek, Terri de la Peña’s 1996 short story “Refugio” and Christopher Carmona\u27s award-winning 2015 short story Strange Leaves and Josefina Lopez’s 2011 play “Detained in the Desert” through the lens of domestic horror. This thesis will demonstrate how the horrific is differential, that is, how what we consider horrific is thoroughly racialized, gendered, classed, and sexualized. The thesis will illustrate how Chican@ fiction challenges the dominant narrative and redeploys horror as a tool for collective action against the systematic oppression of immigrants. More specifically, I will show how these corpus lends insight into the affective--and horrific--experience of gendered oppression

Physical Activity and Mental Health Status As Moderated by Activity Promotive Environment

    Get PDF
Physical activity continues to show potential for improving treatment of an array of mental health disorders and mental well-being. Several studies show that physical activity relates to overall decrease in symptoms of mental distress, lower rates of anxiety, and several other mental health conditions. The nature of the relationship between physical activity and mental health is reviewed including the relationship of environmental factors to physical activity and mental health. The review supports the aims of further adding to research on environmental variables moderating effect on health and presenting historical perspectives of concepts of health and key methodological limitations. The present study of a 4,391-sized sample of Texas residents investigated the relationship between physical activity (as measured by mean days per week) and perceived mental health status (as measured by mean healthy days reported in past month) and evaluates the moderating effects of environment (e.g. social cues, social connectivity, traffic safety, and crime safety) on the relationship between physical activity and perceived mental health status. Results indicated physical activity and perceived mental health status were positively correlated associated, however, statistical strength of this relationship was small. Further, despite no moderation effect was supported by current study, findings do indicate that environmental variables used in this study did play a confounding role regarding the relationship between physical activity and perceived mental health status
