Special K\"ahler-Ricci potentials on compact K\"ahler manifolds
A special K\"ahler-Ricci potential on a K\"ahler manifold is any nonconstant
function such that is a Killing vector field
and, at every point with , all nonzero tangent vectors orthogonal
to and are eigenvectors of both and
the Ricci tensor. For instance, this is always the case if is a
nonconstant function on a K\"ahler manifold of complex
dimension and the metric , defined wherever , is Einstein. (When such exists, may be called {\it
almost-everywhere conformally Einstein}.) We provide a complete classification
of compact K\"ahler manifolds with special K\"ahler-Ricci potentials and use it
to prove a structure theorem for compact K\"ahler manifolds of any complex
dimension which are almost-everywhere conformally Einstein.Comment: 45 pages, AMSTeX, submitted to Journal f\"ur die reine und angewandte

New DRIE-Patterned Electrets for Vibration Energy Harvesting
This paper is about a new manufacturing process aimed at developing stable
SiO2/Si3N4 patterned electrets using a Deep Reactive Ion Etching (DRIE) step
for an application in electret-based Vibration Energy Harvesters (e-VEH). This
process consists in forming continuous layers of SiO2/Si3N4 electrets in order
to limit surface conduction phenomena and is a new way to see the problem of
electret patterning. Experimental results prove that patterned electrets
charged by a positive corona discharge show excellent stability with high
surface charge densities that may reach 5mC/m^2 on 1.1\mu m-thick layers, even
with fine patterning and harsh temperature conditions (up to 250{\deg}C). This
paves the way to new e-VEH designs and manufacturing processes.Comment: Proc. European Energy Conference, 201
RATCHETING OF STAINLESS STEEL 304 UNDER MULTIAXIAL NONPROPORTIONAL LOADING
ABSTRACT Ratcheting tests are conducted on stainless steel 304 under uniaxial, torsional, and combined axial-torsional loading. The ratcheting strain is predicted based on the constitutive theory that incorporates a modified Ohno-Wang kinematic hardening rule and Tanaka's isotropic hardening model. The results show that the main features of the stress-strain response can be simulated with the constitutive model. The experimental and predicted ratcheting strains for nonproportional paths are found in decent correlation. Ratcheting strain depends highly on the loading path and load level, and less on cyclic hardening or softening of the material. The torsional ratcheting strain under mean shear stress with (or without) fully reversed axial strain cycling is found close to the axial ratcheting strain under equivalent mean stress with (or without) torsional strain cycling
Hamiltonian 2-forms in Kahler geometry, III Extremal metrics and stability
This paper concerns the explicit construction of extremal Kaehler metrics on
total spaces of projective bundles, which have been studied in many places. We
present a unified approach, motivated by the theory of hamiltonian 2-forms (as
introduced and studied in previous papers in the series) but this paper is
largely independent of that theory.
We obtain a characterization, on a large family of projective bundles, of
those `admissible' Kaehler classes (i.e., the ones compatible with the bundle
structure in a way we make precise) which contain an extremal Kaehler metric.
In many cases, such as on geometrically ruled surfaces, every Kaehler class is
admissible. In particular, our results complete the classification of extremal
Kaehler metrics on geometrically ruled surfaces, answering several
long-standing questions.
We also find that our characterization agrees with a notion of K-stability
for admissible Kaehler classes. Our examples and nonexistence results therefore
provide a fertile testing ground for the rapidly developing theory of stability
for projective varieties, and we discuss some of the ramifications. In
particular we obtain examples of projective varieties which are destabilized by
a non-algebraic degeneration.Comment: 40 pages, sequel to math.DG/0401320 and math.DG/0202280, but largely

Intranasal administration of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors
This short review outlines the rationale, challenges, and opportunities for intranasal acetylcholinesterases, in particular galantamine. An in vitro screening model facilitated the development of a therapeutically viable formulation. In vivo testing confirmed achievement of therapeutically relevant drug levels that matched or exceeded those for oral dosing, with a dramatic reduction in undesired emetic responses. Intranasal drug delivery is an effective option for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other central nervous system disorders

Expression of a Constitutively Active Form of Hck in Chondrocytes Activates Wnt and Hedgehog Signaling Pathways, and Induces Chondrocyte Proliferation in Mice
Runx2 is required for chondrocyte proliferation and maturation. In the search of Runx2 target genes in chondrocytes, we found that Runx2 up-regulated the expression of hematopoietic cell kinase (Hck), which is a member of the Src tyrosine kinase family, in chondrocytes, that Hck expression was high in cartilaginous limb skeletons of wild-type mice but low in those of Runx2?/? mice, and that Runx2 bound the promoter region of Hck. To investigate the functions of Hck in chondrocytes, transgenic mice expressing a constitutively active form of Hck (HckCA) were generated using the Col2a1 promoter/enhancer. The hind limb skeletons were fused, the tibia became a large, round mass, and the growth plate was markedly disorganized. Chondrocyte maturation was delayed until E16.5 but accelerated thereafter. BrdU-labeled, but not terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL)-positive, chondrocytes were increased. Furthermore, Hck knock-down reduced the proliferation of primary chondrocytes. In microarray and real-time RT-PCR analyses using hind limb RNA from HckCA transgenic mice, the expression of Wnt (Wnt10b, Tcf7, Lef1, Dkk1) and hedgehog (Ihh, Ptch1, and Gli1) signaling pathway genes was upregulated. These findings indicated that Hck, whose expression is regulated by Runx2, is highly expressed in chondrocytes, and that HckCA activates Wnt and hedgehog signaling pathways, and promotes chondrocyte proliferation without increasing apoptosis
