Effect of propranolol on regional myocardial function in anesthetized open-chest dogs with myocardial ischemia
Effects of propranolol on ischemic segmental function were studied in anesthetized open-chest dogs. Two segment-length gauges were used for measuring the regional myocardial function: one was sutured on to the left ventricular surface perfused by the anterior descending coronary artery (ischemic zone) and the other was on to that perfused by the circumflex coronary artery (normal zone). A bolus of propranolol (0.5 mg/kg) was injected into the right femoral vein. Five min later, the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) was completely occluded for one mine and thereafter released. Then a second coronary occlusion for 20 min was performed; an interval of 20 min was allowed between two occlusions. Propranolol, in the ischemic segment, apparently decreased the extent of paradoxical lengthening in the late systole following one min LAD occlusion, and facilitated improvement of segmental function after release of the occlusion. Moreover, the extent of abnormal stretching induced by 20 min occlusion during early systole, was also reduced by propranolol pretreatment. In contrast, compensatory increase in shortening by the normal segment was disturbed by propranolol. These results suggest that propranolol might exert a favourable influence on the segmental myocardial function during either transient or maintained myocardial ischemia.</p
Distortion of Magnetic Fields in a Starless Core V: Near-infrared and Submillimeter Polarization in FeSt 1-457
The relationship between submillimeter (submm) dust emission polarization and
near-infrared (NIR) -band polarization produced by dust dichroic extinction
was studied for the cold starless dense core FeSt 1-457. The distribution of
polarization angles (-rotated for submm) and degrees were found to
be very different between at submm and NIR wavelengths. The mean polarization
angles for FeSt 1-457 at submm and NIR wavelengths are and , respectively. The correlation
between and was found to be linear from outermost regions to
relatively dense line of sight of mag, indicating that NIR
polarization reflects overall polarization (magnetic field) structure of the
core at least in this density range. The flat versus
correlations were confirmed, and the polarization efficiency was found to be
comparable to the observational upper limit (Jones 1989). On the other hand, as
reported by Alves et al., submm polarization degrees show clear linearly
decreasing trend against from mag to the densest center
( mag), appearing as "polarization hole" structure. The power
law index for the versus relationship was obtained to be
, indicating that the alignment for the submm sensitive dust is
lost. These very different polarization distributions at submm and NIR
wavelengths suggest that (1) there is different radiation environment at these
wavelengths or (2) submm-sensitive dust is localized or the combination of

A patient with repeated syncopal attacks after using isosorbide dinitrate
The case of a patient with repeated attacks of collapse induced by sublingual isosorbide dinitrate is reported. The patient was an 81 year-old female who was admitted to Yura Hospital because of attacks of precordial pain. Several minutes after the sublingual administration of isosorbide dinitrate (10 mg) for an anginal attack, she developed a sensation of general weakness, and thereafter because unconscious. Arterial blood pressure fell and became unmeasurable. Electrocardiograms recorded during the syncopal attack showed sinus tachycardia and significant elevation of ST-segment in right precordial leads. In response to a drip infusion of noradrenaline, arterial blood pressure returned to normal with recovery of consciousness. Two similar syncopal attacks induced by sublingual isosorbide dinitrate occurred in the next three days. These attacks were not due to augmentation of the vagal reflex. Decrease of venous return probably was the primary etiological factor.</p
Benefits of umbilical cord milking versus delayed cord clamping on neonatal outcomes in preterm infants: A systematic review and meta-analysis
BackgroundOptimum timing of umbilical cord clamping has not been established in preterm infants.ObjectivesWe compared the short- and long-term effects of umbilical cord milking (UCM) versus delayed cord clamping (DCC) on infants born at less than 37 weeks of gestation.Search methodsA systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted according to the “Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses” statement. We searched CINAHL, CENTRAL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs).Selection criteriaWe included individual and clustered RCTs comparing UCM to DCC for infants born before 37 weeks of gestation.Data collection and analysisFour reviewers independently assessed trial quality and eligibility for inclusion.Main resultsTwo trials (255 preterm infants, 23 0/7 to 32 6/7 weeks of gestation) were included in the analysis. UCM was associated with fewer intraventricular hemorrhages (IVHs) (two trials, 255 infants; relative risk [RR] 0.45, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.20 to 0.98, low quality of evidence) and UCM was an increased proportion of infants with a Bayley score at 2 years of age (two trials, 174 infants; Cognitive: RR 1.14, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.26, Language: RR 1.24, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.49, low quality of evidence) compared to DCC.ConclusionsUCM wasn’t reduced in-hospital mortality and need for transfusion compared to DCC. But our study suggests that UCM may lower the risk of IVH and improve certain neurodevelopmental outcomes compared to DCC in preterm infants
Novel CUL4B mutation in Cabezas syndrome
Cabezas syndrome is a syndromic form of X-linked intellectual disability primarily characterized by a short stature, hypogonadism and abnormal gait, with other variable features resulting from mutations in the CUL4B gene. Here, we report a clinically undiagnosed 5-year-old male with severe intellectual disability. A genome-first approach using targeted exome sequencing identified a novel nonsense mutation [NM_003588.3:c.2698G>T, p.(Glu900*)] in the last coding exon of CUL4B, thus diagnosing this patient with Cabezas syndrome
Millimeter- and Submillimeter-Wave Observations of the OMC-2/3 Region. III. An Extensive Survey for Molecular Outflows
Using the ASTE 10 m submillimeter telescope and the 1.4 m Infrared Survey
Facility (IRSF), we performed an extensive outflow survey in the Orion
Molecular Cloud -2 and -3 region. Our survey, which includes 41 potential
star-forming sites, has been newly compiled using multi-wavelength data based
on millimeter- and submillimeter-continuum observations as well as radio
continuum observations. From the CO (3-2) observations performed with the ASTE
10 m telescope, we detected 14 CO molecular outflows, seven of which were newly
identified. This higher detection rate, as compared to previous CO (1-0)
results in the same region, suggests that CO (3-2) may be a better outflow
tracer. Physical properties of these outflows and their possible driving
sources were derived. Derived parameters were compared with those of CO
outflows in low- and high-mass starforming regions. We show that the CO outflow
momentum correlates with the bolometric luminosity of the driving source and
with the envelope mass, regardless of the mass of the driving sources. In
addition to these CO outflows, seven sources having NIR features suggestive of

Distortion of Magnetic Fields in a Starless Core IV: Magnetic Field Scaling on Density and Mass-to-flux Ratio Distribution in FeSt 1-457
In the present study, the magnetic field scaling on density, , was revealed in a single starless core for the first time. The
index of was obtained toward the starless dense core
FeSt 1-457 based on the analysis of the radial distribution of the polarization
angle dispersion of background stars measured at the near-infrared wavelengths.
The result prefers for the case of isotropic contraction, and
the difference of the observed value from is 2.8 sigma. The
distribution of the ratio of mass to magnetic flux was evaluated. FeSt 1-457
was found to be magnetically supercritical near the center (), whereas nearly critical or slightly subcritical at the core boundary
(). Ambipolar-diffusion-regulated star formation models
for the case of moderate magnetic field strength may explain the physical
status of FeSt 1-457. The mass-to-flux ratio distribution for typical dense
cores (critical Bonnor--Ebert sphere with central and
--) was calculated and found to be magnetically
critical/subcritical at the core edge, which indicates that typical dense cores
are embedded in and evolve from magnetically critical/subcritical diffuse

Near-Infrared Imaging Polarimetry of S106 Cluster-Forming Region with SIRPOL
We present the results of wide-field JHKs polarimetry toward the HII region
S106 using the IRSF (Infrared Survey Facility) telescope. Our polarimetry data
revealed an extended (up to ~ 5') polarized nebula over S106. We confirmed the
position of the illuminating source of most of the nebula as consistent with
S106 IRS4 through an analysis of polarization vectors. The bright portion of
the polarized intensity is consistent with the red wing component of the
molecular gas. Diffuse polarized intensity emission is distributed along the
north--south molecular gas lanes. We found the interaction region between the
radiation from S106 IRS4 and the dense gas. In addition, we also discovered two
small polarization nebulae, SIRN1 and SIRN2, associated with a young stellar
objects (YSO). Aperture polarimetry of point-like sources in this region was
carried out for the first time. The regional magnetic field structures were
derived using point-like source aperture polarimetry, and the magnetic field
structure position angle around the cluster region in S106 was found to be ~
120\arcdeg. The magnetic fields in the cluster region, however, have three
type position angles: ~ 20\arcdeg, ~ 80\arcdeg, and ~ 120\arcdeg. The
present magnetic field structures are consistent with results obtained by
submillimeter continuum observations. We found that the magnetic field
direction in the dense gas region is not consistent with that of the low
