This paper presents an experimental study on the dynamic response of square footings under effect of dynamic load comes from adjacent footing called the (source of vibration (which is excited by a known vibration source placed on the top of it, the objective is to study the effect of dynamic motion of the source of vibration on a nearby footing, called second footing, both footings rest on collapsible soil (gypseouse soil) with gypseouse content (60%). The study is performed through wide experimental program in dry and soaked condition. The first footing (source vibration) and the second footing have dimensions (80 80 40), (100 100 40) mm respectively and are manufactured from steel, then the two footings placed centrally over soil after prepared it in layers’ form in steel container with (1000 500 500) mm. The first footing exposed to vertical harmonic loading by using a rotating mass type mechanical oscillator to gives a similar effect of the dynamic loads, the second footing loaded with static weight only, under the dynamic excitation. The tests are conducted under dynamic response for three frequencies (10, 20, 30) Hz, the movement (displacement amplitude, velocity, and acceleration) of the second footing studied by varying spacing between the footings. The results showed that the amplitude of displacement, velocity, and acceleration for the second footing decreases when the spacing between footing increase. In addition, the value of these parameters at dry state is greater than its value at soaked state

Performance enhancement of maximum ratio transmission in 5G system with multi-user multiple-input multiple-output

    Get PDF
The downlink multi-user precoding of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) method includes optimal channel state information at the base station and a variety of linear precoding (LP) schemes. Maximum ratio transmission (MRT) is among the common precoding schemes but does not provide good performance with massive MIMO, such as high bit error rate (BER) and low throughput. The orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and precoding schemes used in 5G have a flaw in high-speed environments. Given that the Doppler effect induces frequency changes, orthogonality between OFDM subcarriers is disrupted and their throughput output is decreased and BER is decreased. This study focuses on solving this problem by improving the performance of a 5G system with MRT, specifically by using a new design that includes weighted overlap and add (WOLA) with MRT. The current research also compares the standard system MRT with OFDM with the proposed design (WOLA-MRT) to find the best performance on throughput and BER. Improved system results show outstanding performance enhancement over a standard system, and numerous improvements with massive MIMO, such as best BER and throughput. Its approximately 60% more throughput than the traditional systems. Lastly, the proposed system improves BER by approximately 2% compared with the traditional system

Addressing the challenges of ECMO simulation

    Get PDF
This document is the Accepted Manuscript. The final, definitive version of this paper has been published in Perfusion, May 2018, published by SAGE Publishing, All rights reserved.Introduction/Aim: The patient’s condition and high-risk nature of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy force clinical services to ensure clinicians are properly trained and always ready to deal effectively with critical situations. Simulation-based education (SBE), from the simplest approaches to the most immersive modalities, helps promote optimum individual and team performance. The risks of SBE are negative learning, inauthenticity in learning and over-reliance on the participants’ suspension of disbelief. This is especially relevant to ECMO SBE as circuit/patient interactions are difficult to fully simulate without confusing circuit alterations. Methods: Our efforts concentrate on making ECMO simulation easier and more realistic in order to reduce the current gap there is between SBE and real ECMO patient care. Issues to be overcome include controlling the circuit pressures, system failures, patient issues, blood colour and cost factors. Key to our developments are the hospital-university collaboration and research funding. Results: A prototype ECMO simulator has been developed that allows for realistic ECMO SBE. The system emulates the ECMO machine interface with remotely controllable pressure parameters, haemorrhaging, line chattering, air bubble noise and simulated blood colour change. Conclusion: The prototype simulator allows the simulation of common ECMO emergencies through innovative solutions that enhance the fidelity of ECMO SBE and reduce the requirement for suspension of disbelief from participants. Future developments will encompass the patient cannulation aspect.Peer reviewe

The Right to Counsel at the stage of preliminary investigation; A Comparative Study

    Get PDF
The right to counsel is regarded as a constituent of the right to fair trial since it plays a crucial role in assisting the defendant to prove his innocence and expose the truth. Although the right to have the assistance of counsel at the trial stage has been constitutionally recognized in most countries, it is still uncertain whether or not the person, who is suspected of, investigated for or accused of a crime has the right to be assisted by counsel during the preliminary investigation stage. As such, this study aims to shed light on the right to assistance of counsel as a fundamental right of criminal defendants. It also aims to explore whether it is possible to enjoy such right at the stage of preliminary investigation, and if so, what is the consequence of denying this right
