Objectives: Osteoporosis is commonly developed due tonatural course of Behçet’s disease (BD) and therapeuticagents. It was aimed to investigate levels of osteoprotegerinand TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor), and bone mineral density(BMD) and correlation between them in BD.Materials and methods: The study included two groupsas the study and the control group. Serum levels of TNF-α,osteoprotegerin, osteocalcine, erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), and urinary creatinine anddeoxypyridinoline along with BMD level were evaluated andcompared. Correlation between TNF-α and osteoprotegerinlevel was investigated. Results: The study enrolled 41 BD patients and 36 agedmatchedcontrol subjects. Mean age was 42.26±11.64 and41.66±70.99, in the study and control groups, respectively. There was no significant difference in body mass index(BMI) of subjects between groups (p>0.05). Level of TNF-α(p<0.001), deoxypyridinoline (p<0.001) and osteocalcine(p=0.041) was significantly higher in the study group comparedto the control group. Osteoprotegerin was lower inBD patients, but the difference was not significant (p>0.05).Urinary deoxypyridinoline/ urinary creatinine ratio in patientswith BD was significantly higher than those in control group(p=0.030). Patients had significantly lower BMD comparfedto the control group, except L2-L4 vertebral area (p<0.001,p<0.001, p=0.035, p<0.001, p=0.012, p<0.001, p<0.001 andp=0.111, respectively). No correlation was found betweenTNF-α and osteoprotegerin. Conclusions: The present study indicated that TNF-α andBMD was negatively correlated with each other and TNF-αhad an effect on osteoporotic process in patients with BD.Osteoprotegerin level was not decreased, and not correlatedwith TNF-α.Key words: Behçet’s disease, osteoprotegerin, TNF-α, osteocalcin

The Mediator multiprotein complex functions as a regulator of RNA polymerase II-catalyzed gene transcription. In this study, exome sequencing detected biallelic putative disease-causing variants in MED27, encoding Mediator complex subunit 27, in 16 patients from 11 families with a novel neurodevelopmental syndrome. Patient phenotypes are highly homogeneous, including global developmental delay, intellectual disability, axial hypotonia with distal spasticity, dystonic movements, and cerebellar hypoplasia. Seizures and cataracts were noted in severely affected individuals. Identification of multiple patients with biallelic MED27 variants supports the critical role of MED27 in normal human neural development, particularly for the cerebellum. ANN NEUROL 2021Peer reviewe

Partitions in the Two Widespread copies of the Qur'an and Their Nature

    No full text
WOS: 000406625600021The study is mainly about the partitions of the two widespread copies of the Qur'an known as mu..afs. One of these partitions is published in Turkey under the supervision of the Presidency of Religious Affairs, and the Board of Inspection and Recitation of the Qur'an. The second one is published by an Islamic delegation and by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Foundations, Invitation and Guidance of Saudi Arabia. Both the mu..afs are widely used in many countries, especially in terms of the places where they are printed. In the study, the partitions in the mu..afs are discussed in a comparative manner in terms of their bases and their functions. In this context, first of all, the mentioned partitions are linked together with the words and practices of The Prophet and his companions. Then the same and different partitions in these mu..afs and, different aspects of the same partitions are examined. The functions of existing departments are also mentioned. The "symbol of bowing (Ruku.)" on this mu..af published in Turkey is examined. It is recommended that this section should be named as "the symbol of mawdu.." Even the practices belong to the period of the Prophet, the differences in the partitions show that the existing divisions are based on opinions or judicial judgments (ijtihadi)

WOS: 000406622100007In this study, the term of 'blessing', which is a basic Qur'anic concept, is analyzed. In this regard, the study focuses on the definition of 'blessing', its different meanings in the various contexts, synonyms and antonyms and its leading individuals to the dimensions of faith, worship and morality. These subject matters are studied by taking into consideration of the meanings of 'blessing' in the Qur'an and commentators' explanations about the word. The expression of the 'blessing' in the Qur'an indicates that the word has an extensive and constructive meaning. The fact that having an extensive meaning demonstrates that the points the word encompasses can be determined to some extent. It is exemplified in the Qur'an what can be regarded as 'blessing'. Furthermore, the commentators determine various meanings to the word by considering the contexts in which the word is used. It is understood that the aim of using the word in the Qur'an is to lead the individuals to the dimensions of the faith, worship and morality. It is possible for people to be grateful to God by making this aim more visible in their lives

In the literature, there is no reported pediatric leiomyosarcoma case that has metastasized from the small intestine to the adrenal gland. A 10-year-old boy who had anemia and weight loss over 2 years presented with abdominal pain that began 1 week previously. Radiologic examination revealed bilateral adrenal tumors. At the time of surgery, the terminal ileum was resected and a tru-cut biopsy was done from the right adrenal mass. The pathology report was leiomyosarcoma for both of the resection and tru-cut specimens. We present an intestinal leiomyosarcoma that metastasized from the small intestine to both adrenal glands with clinical, morphologic, and immunohistochemical studies with a literature review

Rare pancreas tumor mimicking adenocarcinoma: Extramedullary plasmacytoma

    No full text
Neoplastic proliferation of plasma cells is called plasma cell dyscrasias, and these neoplasms can present as a solitary neoplasm or multiple myeloma. Extramedullary plasmacytoma, in particular pancreatic plasmacytoma, is a rare manifestation of multiple myeloma. Although computerized tomography is useful for the diagnosis of extramedullary plasmacytoma, there are no specific radiologic markers that distinguish it from adenocarcinoma. Histological confirmation by biopsy is necessary for accurate diagnosis and management of the tumor. Endosonography is the most sensitive method for the diagnosis of pancreatic tumors, and the use of fine needle aspiration by endosonography is associated with a lower risk for malignant seeding and complications. Here, we report a case of pancreatic plasmacytoma in newly identified multiple myeloma as diagnosed by endosonography. Endosonography is a reliable and rapid method for the diagnosis of extramedullary plasmacytoma. Therefore, endosonographic fine needle aspiration should be the first choice for histological evaluation when pancreatic plasmacytoma is suspected. Ideally, the pathology would be performed at the same site as endosonographic biopsy. (C) 2014 Baishideng Publishing Group Co., Limited. All rights reserved

Perfusion Index and Pleth Variability Index in the First Hour of Life According to Mode of Delivery

    No full text
Perfusion index (PI) is a relative assessment of the pulse strength at the monitoring site. The plethysmographic variability index (PVI, pleth variability index) is a noninvasive and continuous measure of the dynamic change in PI that occurs during respiratory cycles. In this study PI and PVI changes were compared in babies born with cesarean section (C/S) or spontaneous vaginal delivery (SVD); 125 healthy term infants were monitored with pulse oxymeter after first ten minutes of life. Data were recorded from this monitor on a personal computer and analyzed by generalized estimating equations (GEE) method. Pulse rate was lower in babies born via SVD. Perfusion index were higher in C/S group. Pleth variability index were higher in C/S group. Higher pulse rate, PI and PVI values in babies born via C/S may be indicative of more significant hemodynamic changes in these infants during early transitional period after birth.WoSScopu

A cobalt (II) complex with 6-methylpicolinate: Synthesis, characterization, second- and third-order nonlinear optical properties, and DFT calculations

    No full text
A cobalt(II) complex of 6-methylpicolinic acid, [Co(6-Mepic)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O, was prepared and fully determined by single crystal X-ray crystal structure analysis as well as FT-IR, FT-Raman. UV-vis spectra were recorded within different solvents, to illustrate electronic transitions and molecular charge transfer within complex 1. The coordination sphere of complex 1 is a distorted octahedron according to single crystal X-ray results. Moreover, DFT (density functional theory) calculations with HSEH1PBE/6-311 G(d,p) level were carried out to back up the experimental results, and form base for future work in advanced level. Hyperconjugative interactions, intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), molecular stability and bond strength were researched by the using natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. X-ray and NBO analysis results demonsrate that O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds between the water molecules and carboxylate oxygen atoms form a 2D supramolecular network, and also adjacent 2D networks connected by C-H center dot center dot center dot pi and pi center dot center dot center dot pi interactions to form a 3D supramolecular network. Additionally, the second- and third-order nonlinear optical parameters of complex 1 were computed at DFT/FISEH1PBE/6-311 G(d,p) level. The refractive index (n) was calculated by using the Lorentz-Lorenz equation in order to investigate polarization behavior of complex 1 in different solvent polarities. The first-order static hyperpolarizability ((3) value is found to be lower than pNA value because of the inversion symmetry around Co (II). But the second-order static hyperpolarizability (gamma) value is 2.45 times greater than pNA value (15 x 10(-30) esu). According to these results, Co(II) complex can be considered as a candidate to NLO material. Lastly molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), frontier molecular orbital energies and related molecular parameters for complex 1 were evaluated. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
