A case of uveodermatologic syndrome in a male 2 year old, Spanish Mastiff is described. The clinical signs found, namely uvezitis associated with cutaneus and mucocutaneous depigmentation and erosions of the face, scrotum, perianal region and footpads, were similar to those of the human Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada syndrome. The histopathological study showed a lichenoid dermatitis with prevalence of macrophages. The treatment encompassed the administration of prednisone per os and topical ocular therapy with corticosteroids associated with atropin e. After 8 months the cutaneous and mucosal Iesions had completely remitted

Improved unitarized Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory for π N scattering

We show how the unitarized description of pion nucleon scattering within Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory can be considerably improved, by a suitable reordering of the expansion over the nucleon mass. Within this framework, the ∆ resonance and its associated pole can be recovered from the chiral parameters obtained from low-energy determinations. In addition, we can obtain a good description of the six S and P wave phase shifts in terms of chiral parameters with a natural size and compatible with the Resonance Saturation Hypothesis

Unimodularity and invariant volume forms for Hamiltonian dynamics on Poisson-Lie groups

In this paper, we discuss several relations between the existence of invariant volume forms for Hamiltonian systems on Poisson-Lie groups and the unimodularity of the Poisson-Lie structure. In particular, we prove that Hamiltonian vector fields on a Lie group endowed with a unimodular Poisson-Lie structure preserve a multiple of any left-invariant volume on the group. Conversely, we also prove that if there exists a Hamiltonian function such that the identity element of the Lie group is a nondegenerate singularity and the associated Hamiltonian vector field preserves a volume form, then the Poisson-Lie structure is necessarily unimodular. Furthermore, we illustrate our theory with different interesting examples, both on semisimple and unimodular Poisson-Lie groups.Comment: 17 page

New data (U–Pb, K–Ar) on the geochronology of the alkaline-carbonatitic association of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain

Zircons from a nepheline-syenite of the Fuerteventura Basal Complex were dated by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The age obtained from a total of 21 U–Th–Pb analyses is 25.4F0.3 Ma (2r) indicating a late Oligocene–early Miocene crystallization. This age is consistent with new K–Ar ages on nepheline-syenites and pyroxenites, and contradicts previously published 39Ar–40Ar (feldspar) ages that were interpreted to represent a late Cretaceous–early Paleocene, pyroxenitic–syenitic magmatic episode. These new geochronological data are consistent with both field observations and most of the previously published ages on alkaline silicate rocks and associated carbonatites of Fuerteventura. Therefore, they strongly support the existence of a single, late Oligocene–early Miocene event of alkaline–carbonatitic magmatism in the Basal Complex of Fuerteventura, taking place at approximately 25 Ma and comprising: alkaline-pyroxenites, melteigites-ijolites, nepheline-syenites and carbonatites, as well as their volcanic equivalents and associated dykes. These new data provide an estimate for the length of time that it took the island to grow, thus eliminating one of the major problems in explaining its development by a hot-spot model

Magnetic characterization of Fe, Ni, Co nanoparticles dispersed in phyllosilicate type silicon oxide

International audienceWe present the magnetic properties of silica-supported metal (Fe,catalyst) nanoparticles synthesized by precipitation of metal nitrate in ammonia-based medium. Our goal is the study of possible metal-support interactions in the nanoporous catalyst. The temperature dependence of the magnetization for all samples display spin-glass like behavior below c.a. 11-12 K, with clear Curie-Weiss dependence in the high-temperature regime. Spin-glass-like behavior was inferred from dynamic AC susceptibility data after analyzing the frequency-dependence of the in-phase component χ'(f) by the expression W = ΔTf/[Tf Δlog(f)] = 3.0 × 10−3. We found that the magnetic behavior of the catalyst is drastically affected by the existence of interactions between the metal and the support

Be-Phenomenon in Neutron Star X-ray Binaries

    Get PDF
In this work we provide a brief insight into two aspects of Be/X-ray binaries, which are probably involved in production of X-ray outbursts: the evolution of the Be star disk, in particular of its size, and the binary geometry which drives gravitational interaction. Simultaneous X-ray and optical data will aid our investigation of the evolution of Be stars in binaries and the X-ray outburst mechanism

SU(3) Chiral approach to meson and baryon dynamics

    Get PDF
We report on recent progress on the chiral unitary approach, which is shown to have a much larger convergence radius than ordinary chiral perturbation theory, allowing one to reproduce data for meson meson interaction up to 1.2 GeV and meson baryon interaction up to the first baryonic resonances. Applications to physical processes so far unsuited for a standard chiral perturbative approach are presented, concretely the K⁻ p → Λ(1405) γ reaction and the N*(1535) N+(1535) π and η couplings
