summary:If (etA)t>0(e^{-tA})_{t>0} is a strongly continuous and contractive semigroup on a complex Banach space BB, then (A)α-(-A)^\alpha , 0<α<10<\alpha <1, generates a holomorphic semigroup on BB. This was proved by K. Yosida in [7]. Using similar techniques, we present a class HH of Bernstein functions such that for all fHf\in H, the operator f(A)-f(-A) generates a holomorphic semigroup

Studying the impacts of primary incidents on freeways to identify secondary incidents

Freeway incidents are associated with different impacts such as traffic congestion, delays, fuel consumption, secondary incidents etc. Secondary incidents are caused due to primary incidents and require the same personnel who are already engaged. This thesis studies various impacts caused by primary incident in space and time occurring on the freeways and these results are applied to identify secondary incidents. Three types of impacts are identified and proposed in this study. Dynamic nature of queue length in the direction of accident is studied. Dynamic nature of congestion in the opposite direction of the freeway till the accident is cleared is also studied. Dynamic nature of movement of distraction point on the opposite side of the freeway as the queue gets cleared in accident direction is studied. Finally, simulations are carried out by using Las Vegas freeway traffic volumes to show the effect of these impacts in Las Vegas region. The simulation results are applied to real time data to identify secondary incidents

Objectives. According to the literature, it is not yet clear whether the digital natives' use of Internet represents a risk or a resource. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between Internet use and the emotional and social offline dynamics. Specifically, we hypothesised that high versus low problematic use of internet was associated with students’ social adjustment. We expected to find that students with high problematic use of internet show more social, behavioural, and emotional problems than students with low problematic use of internet. Material and methods. Participants were 177 students from 4 middle schools in Central Italy, aged 11 to 15 (50% females). Five questionnaires were administered: the Child Behavior CheckList (CBCL) to measure social, emotional and behavioural problems, the Crozier Shyness Questionnaire to measure shyness and the UCLA Loneliness Scale to measure loneliness. For internet misuse we used the Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale and 3 questions to assess activities and time spent on the internet. Results. The higher the preference for online interactions of the Internet adopted by students to regulate mood, the higher the internalization problems recorded. Moreover, the higher preference for online social interactions adopted by students and the negative outcomes due to the Internet use, the higher the externalization problems displayed. Conclusions. Consistently with the literature our results seem to confirm the negative effect of the internet misuse on socio-emotional features. We discuss the relationship between internet use (related to mood regulation, negative social consequences and preference for online interactions) and social-emotional adjustmen

Systematic review: hereditary thrombophilia associated to pediatric strokes and cerebral palsy

AbstractObjectivesThis review aimed to organize and consolidate the latest knowledge about mutations and genetic polymorphisms related to hereditary thrombophilia and their potential association with pediatric stroke and cerebral palsy (CP).SourcesScientific articles published from 1993 to 2013, written in Portuguese, English, French, and Spanish, were selected and reviewed. The publications were searched in electronic databases, and also in the collections of local libraries. The terms “hereditary thrombophilia”, “polymorphisms”, “mutation”, “pediatric strokes”, and “cerebral palsy” were used for the research.Summary of the findingsThe search in databases and in the bibliographic references retrieved 75 articles for inclusion in this review. Studies that investigated hereditary thrombophilias and their associations to CP and arterial and venous pediatric stroke presented contradictory results. The meta‐analysis and case‐control studies that showed positive results for this association described only slightly increased relative risks and sometimes had questionable conclusions. The association of two or more hereditary thrombophilias, or the association between thrombophilia and other specific clinical risk factors, suggest a higher risk of CP and pediatric stroke than isolated hereditary thrombophilia.ConclusionsLarger, multicenter studies should be developed in order to elucidate the role of mutations leading to hereditary thrombophilia and the development of CP and pediatric stroke. The complex and multifactorial etiology of CP and stroke makes this an arduous and difficult task; however, the benefits generated by these studies are immeasurable.

Thermal transient flow rate sensor for high temperature liquid metal cooled nuclear reactor

In nuclear power plants and accelerator driven system (ADS) for nuclear waste treatment, it is important to monitor the coolant flow rate in the reactor core and pipe-line. In such a strong irradiation, high pressure and temperature environment, no accurate local flow measurement technique is readily available. Electromagnetic (EM) flow meter is popular in low temperature application as it is a non-intrusive technology. However, additional voltage will be produced due to temperature, flow, pressure, the chemical properties of the liquid metal and surface condition of the steel walls. In addition, the non-definite wetting behavior of liquid lead-bismuth to the electrically conducting structure material can lead to incorrect readings even during one measurement day. As the temperature measurement technique is well developed for high temperature applications, one alternative flow rate measurement technique is proposed here based on correlation velocity measurement using temperature sensors. The impulse response function (IRF) will be used instead of the cross-correlation function in the time delay estimation. The IRF method shows a more accurate estimation of the transit time, which allows extremely low velocities (down to 2 cm/sec) to be detected. In this research work, the faster thermal diffusion effect in low Prandtl number liquid metal will be considered for the better delay time estimation. The proposed research will be completed in two years, and in specific, the PIs plan to fulfill the research missions by performing the following activities:1. Review the related literature on correlation velocity measurement technique using temperature noise in the flow field;2. Design and construct a correlation velocity measurement device with a possibility of changing the distances between the two temperature sensors;3. Develop a signal processing and data reduction scheme and implement it to a LabVIEW data acquisition system;4. Perform experiments with different sensor distances and various Reynoldsnumbers in several different water temperatures in single-phase water flows.Experimental results will be compared to a Pitot tube or hot-wire anemometry;5. Evaluate the measurement device in the by-pass system of TC-1.6. Design a circuit board for sensor integration

Triple Compton effect: A photon splitting into three upon collision with a free electron

    Get PDF
The process in which a photon splits into three after the collision with a free electron (triple Compton effect) is the most basic process for the generation of a high-energy multi-particle entangled state composed out of elementary quanta. The cross section of the process is evaluated in two experimentally realizable situations, one employing gamma photons and stationary electrons, and the other using keV photons and GeV electrons of an x-ray free electron laser. For the first case, our calculation is in agreement with the only available measurement of the differential cross section for the process under study. Our estimates indicate that the process should be readily measurable also in the second case. We quantify the polarization entanglement in the final state by a recently proposed multi-particle entanglement measure.Comment: 5 pages; RevTeX; to be published in Phys.Rev.Let

The collective health movement and health policy in Brazil: from regime transition/democratization to democracy and neoliberalism (1970s to 2014)

    Get PDF
This paper analyses how the Brazilian Collective Health Movement (CHM) and its main representatives have influenced the policymaking process for health policy during distinct political periods: from regime transition/re-democratization to democracy (1970s to 2014). We develop a contextual descriptive analysis, involving a literature and documentary review, and interviews with key players. We take into account the political macro contexts (democracy and economic model), governmental coalitions, ideas and actions of the CHM, relationships of the CHM within society, institutionalization of participatory channels, and the interrelations between the Ministries of Economics, of Health and of Social Security. Three main periods were identified: 1) The transition to democracy and Constituent Assembly period, with the fight for and creation of the new national Unified Health Care System (SUS). 2) The first years of re-democratization, during the implementation of the institutional foundations of the SUS (1989- 2002). 3) The period of democracy with neoliberalism (from 2003-2014), when a managerial and participative approach coexisted and conflicted with attempts to subordinate health care policy to the developmental model. The results indicate that the influence of the CHM was less dominant in subsequent years, characterized by the institutionalization of civil participation in health councils, by the prominence of the economic model, and by a more institutionalized political action of movement leaders in the Health Secretaries and the Ministry of Health. In conclusion, we highlight the relevant political lessons regarding the CHM’s possibilities of effective revival in the years to come
