Effect of ration level on non-fecal nitrogen excretion of juvenile yellowtail (Seriola quinqueradiata)
Post-feeding non-fecal nitrogen excretion was determined for juvenile yellowtail in a closed tank system. The highest ammonia excretion value was noticeable 2 hr post-feeding, while the urea excretion rate was highest at 4 hr post-feeding. The ammonia excretion rate of fish fed the lowest ration (1.4%bw) was a half of that of fish fed the highest ration (4.1% bw). The equivalent energy value from ammonia was in the range of 8.7 to 18.0 (KJ/kg bw/day) under present feeding condition
Protection of mice from LPS-induced shock by CD14 antisense oligonucleotide.
CD14 is a pattern recognition receptor on myeloid cells and plays a pivotal role in an innate immune system that is responsible for Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria infection. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a cell wall component of Gram-negative bacteria, can induce production of a large quantity of proinflammatory cytokines into the circulation mediated by CD14-mediated macrophages and monocytes. These cytokines eventually cause septic shock. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that suppression of a CD14 function by a CD14 antibody led to an inhibition of the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta, and IL-8. In the present study, we found that CD14 antisense oligonucleotide (ODN) can prevent lethal LPS shock in D-galactosamine-sensitized mice. This ODN inhibited CD14 expression in a mouse macrophage cell line, RAW264.7, and suppressed production of TNF-alpha in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Furthermore, we designed a consensus antisense ODN that could hybridize human and mouse CD14 RNA, and we evaluated its efficacy. The consensus antisense ODN rescued mice primed with Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) from the LPS-induced lethal shock. In this model, the CD14 antisense ODN down-regulated LPS-elicited CD14 expression in the liver, resulting in a decrease in LPS-induced TNF-alpha production. These findings suggest that the CD14 antisense ODN is distributed in the liver and efficiently suppresses LPS-induced TNF-alpha production by reducing CD14 expression on Kupffer cells. This CD14 antisense ODN may be useful for the development of a therapeutic agent against sepsis and septic shock.</p
Large Scale Field Tests on Quaternary Sand and Gravel Deposits for Seismic Siting Technology
The basic policy of Japan is to build nuclear reactor building on bed rock. But, in order to cope with the middle and long term siting problems it has become necessary to promote new siting technology from the standpoint of expanding the available range of site selections and effective utilization of land. The large scale field tests were conducted at the Tadotsu Engineering Laboratory, Kagawa Prefecture, of The Nuclear Power Engineering Test Center (NUPEC) as an entrusted project into the Siting Methods on Quaternary Deposits from the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), in order to verify the seismic stability of soil appertained to siting technology on quaternary deposits. Described in this paper is the results of the tests
Carotenoids in Marine Invertebrates Living along the Kuroshio Current Coast
Carotenoids of the corals Acropora japonica, A. secale, and A. hyacinthus, the tridacnid clam Tridacna squamosa, the crown-of-thorns starfish Acanthaster planci, and the small sea snail Drupella fragum were investigated. The corals and the tridacnid clam are filter feeders and are associated with symbiotic zooxanthellae. Peridinin and pyrrhoxanthin, which originated from symbiotic zooxanthellae, were found to be major carotenoids in corals and the tridacnid clam. The crown-of-thorns starfish and the sea snail D. fragum are carnivorous and mainly feed on corals. Peridinin-3-acyl esters were major carotenoids in the sea snail D. fragum. On the other hand, ketocarotenoids such as 7,8-didehydroastaxanthin and astaxanthin were major carotenoids in the crown-of-thorns starfish. Carotenoids found in these marine animals closely reflected not only their metabolism but also their food chains

Design and validation of exoskeleton actuated by soft modules towards neurorehabilitation - vision-based control for precise reaching motion of upper limb
We demonstrated the design, production, and functional properties of the Exoskeleton Actuated by the Soft Modules (EAsoftM). Integrating the 3D printed exoskeleton with passive joints to compensate gravity and with active joints to rotate the shoulder and elbow joints resulted in ultra-light system that could assist planar reaching motion by using the vision-based control law. The EAsoftM can support the reaching motion with compliance realised by the soft materials and pneumatic actuation. In addition, the vision-based control law has been proposed for the precise control over the target reaching motion within the millimeter scale.

Aiming at rehabilitation exercise for individuals, typically soft actuators have been developed for relatively small motions, such as grasping motion, and one of the challenges has been to extend their use for a wider range reaching motion. The proposed EAsoftM presented one possible solution for this challenge by transmitting the torque effectively along the anatomically aligned with a human body exoskeleton.

The proposed integrated systems will be an ideal solution for neurorehabilitation where affordable wearable and portable systems are required to be customised for individuals with specific motor impairments
