    The NorduGrid architecture and tools

    The NorduGrid project designed a Grid architecture with the primary goal to meet the requirements of production tasks of the LHC experiments. While it is meant to be a rather generic Grid system, it puts emphasis on batch processing suitable for problems encountered in High Energy Physics. The NorduGrid architecture implementation uses the \globus{} as the foundation for various components, developed by the project. While introducing new services, the NorduGrid does not modify the Globus tools, such that the two can eventually co-exist. The NorduGrid topology is decentralized, avoiding a single point of failure.     Beneficiation of some Egyptian Glass Sands

    The attrition-scrubbing of some Egyptian glass sands was necessary for the disintegration of the ferruginous clayey coating on quartz grains. The effects of time of attrition-ing, impeller speed and solid/liquid ration were investi-gated. Classification of the scrubbed sands resulted in the removal of a slimy fraction and yielded a product having 0.065% Fe. Acid attritioning of sand with commer-cial HCL at room temperature did not affect the iron, coat-ing quartz particles

    Field Verification of the Energy-Based Procedure to Predict the Liquefaction Potential of Soil Deposits

    This paper presents field evidence in support of the energy-base procedure to predict the liquefaction potential of soil deposits. Two recorded earthquake events which occurred at the Wildlife Site: Elmore Ranch earthquake (11/23/1987) and Superstition Hills earthquake (11/24/1987), representing nonliquefaction and liquefaction case histories respectively, were utilized to verify the energybased procedure in field situations. The nonlinearity and the degradation of shear stiffness and strength of soil deposits subjected to earthquake loading under undrained conditions were incorporated in the reconstruction of the shear stress-stain response. The effects of multi-directional excitation on the liquefaction potential and the build-up of pore water pressure were also investigated. Finally, a unit energy-pore pressure model was confirmed by the comparison of the calculated and recorded pore ressure time histories

    Lessons learned from evaluation of the use of the National electronic Library of Infection

    The National electronic Library of Infection (NeLI: http://www.neli.org.uk) in the UK is a freely available portal to key evidence and guidelines in the infectious disease field. This paper discusses 5 years of evaluation of the pilot library and how this evaluation informed design of the new library website. The importance of combining qualitative and quantitative evaluation is highlighted and the results of web access logs analysis, free text search query analysis and an online user survey are compared. The paper concludes with a discussion of lessons learned for future development and evaluation of this Internet digital library

    Atlas Data-Challenge 1 on NorduGrid

    The first LHC application ever to be executed in a computational Grid environment is the so-called ATLAS Data-Challenge 1, more specifically, the part assigned to the Scandinavian members of the ATLAS Collaboration. Taking advantage of the NorduGrid testbed and tools, physicists from Denmark, Norway and Sweden were able to participate in the overall exercise starting in July 2002 and continuing through the rest of 2002 and the first part of 2003 using solely the NorduGrid environment. This allowed to distribute input data over a wide area, and rely on the NorduGrid resource discovery mechanism to find an optimal cluster for job submission. During the whole Data-Challenge 1, more than 2 TB of input data was processed and more than 2.5 TB of output data was produced by more than 4750 Grid jobs.Comment: Talk from the 2003 Computing in High Energy Physics and Nuclear Physics (CHEP03), La Jolla, Ca, USA, March 2003, 7 pages, 3 ps figure

    Toxicity Assessment of the Crude Ethanolic Pod Extract of Swartzia madagascariensis Desv. in Rats

    This study assessed toxicity of the crude ethanolic pod extracts of Swartzia madagascariensis Desv in Wistar rats. Forty (40) Wistar rats aged 8–10 weeks were orally administered with crude extracts from pods of S. madagascariensis. Chemical analysis of serum and histopathology of liver and kidney from test animals were performed to determine the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and creatinine in serum. In addition, serum albumin levels were also determined. The levels of ALT, AST and creatinine were found to be high in groups treated with crude extracts compared to the control group, suggesting some damage in liver cells and kidney of treated groups of Wistar rats. The albumin levels in serum samples of crude extract treated groups were found to be low compared to control group, suggesting some leakage to the urine due to damage in the kidney. Histopathological analyses revealed damages in the liver and kidney treated with 1000 mg/kg of crude ethanolic pod extracts of Swartzia madagascariensis (CEPES) at days 2 and 14, corresponding to what was observed in the biochemical variables. The findings revealed that Swartzia madagascariensis pods are toxic once taken in large quantities (1000 mg/kg). Keywords: Toxicity, Wistar rats, Histopathology, biochemical parameter

    Four new [H(3)tren](3+) or [H(4)tren](4+) fluoride zirconates and two new [H(3)tren](3+) fluoride tantalates are evidenced in the (ZrF4 or Ta2O5)-tren-HFaq.-ethanol systems at 190 degrees C: the structurally related phases [H(4)tren]center dot(Zr2F12)center dot H2O and alpha-[H(4)tren](center dot)(Zr2F12) (P2(1)2(1)2(1)). beta-[H(4)tren]center dot(Zr2F12) (P2(1/c)), [H(3)tren](4)center dot(ZrF8)(3)center dot 4H(2)O (123). beta-[H(3)tren](2)center dot(Ta3O2F16)center dot(F) (R32) and its monoclinic distortion alpha-[H(3)rren](2)center dot(Ta3O2F16)center dot(F) (C2/m). alpha and beta-[H(4)tren]center dot(Zr2F12) and [H(4)tren]center dot(Zr2F12)center dot H2O are built up from (Zr2F12) dimers of edge sharing ZrF7 polyhedra while isolated ZrF8 dodecahedra are found in [H(3)tren](4)center dot(ZrF8)(3)center dot 4H(2)O. Linear (Ta3O2F16) trimers build et and beta-[H(3)tren](2)center dot(Ta3O2F16)center dot(F); they consist of two (TaOF6) pentagonal bipyramids that are linked to two opposite oxygen atoms of one central (TaO2F4) octahedron. A disorder affects the equatorial fluorine atoms of the trimers and eventually carbon or nitrogen atoms of [H(3)tren](3+) cations. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
