Modelling variation of lower leg length growth in early life

We consider the estimation of sources of variation for panel data with repeated measurements. With no repeated measurements and known measurement error, models for variation decomposition have been proposed when there are one or more types of measurements. Estimation was performed using the EM algorithm accompanied by model augmentation that demands more computational efforts. In this article we extend previous variation models and modify the estimation methods in order to estimate various variation components after eliminating the unknown effects of measurement error. Specifically, methods that dispense with model augmentation and estimation of time-dependent covariates are considered. A set of lower leg length data from Chinese infants is analysed by using the proposed model. Interestingly, our results are consistent with the well-accepted three-phase (infancy-childhood-puberty) growth transition proposition for human growth. Moreover, gender effect is found to be time-varying. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.postprin

Strengthening students’ reading comprehension ability (both Chinese and English) through developing children’s literature equiz bank on the cloud

Part I of Social Media 2014 will be held in China and Part II will be held in Las VegasReading proficiency is closely related to students’ academic performance. The online e-quiz bank “Reading Battle” aims at enhancing students’ reading interest and developing their reading habits. After reading children’s literature borrowed from school libraries, students may take quizzes on the e-quiz bank to evaluate their reading comprehension ablility. First launched in Hong Kong, the e-quiz bank assists students in enhancing their reading interest and abilities by motivating, scaffolding, and monitoring strategies. This article discusses the project’s features and evaluates their effectiveness in achieving the project goals. Preliminary findings of the project shows that the e-quiz bank offer participants a fun, interactive, and personalized experience in improving their reading comprehension abilities and is effective in fostering a habit of reading.postprin

Long-term impacts of prenatal synthetic glucocorticoids exposure on functional brain correlates of cognitive monitoring in adolescence

The fetus is highly responsive to the level of glucocorticoids in the gestational environment. Perturbing glucocorticoids during fetal development could yield long-term consequences. Extending prior research about effects of prenatally exposed synthetic glucocorticoids (sGC) on brain structural development during childhood, we investigated functional brain correlates of cognitive conflict monitoring in term-born adolescents, who were prenatally exposed to sGC. Relative to the comparison group, behavioral response consistency (indexed by lower reaction time variability) and a brain correlate of conflict monitoring (the N2 event-related potential) were reduced in the sGC exposed group. Relatedly, source localization analyses showed that activations in the fronto-parietal network, most notably in the cingulate cortex and precuneus, were also attenuated in these adolescents. These regions are known to subserve conflict detection and response inhibition as well as top-down regulation of stress responses. Moreover, source activation in the anterior cingulate cortex correlated negatively with reaction time variability, whereas activation in the precuneus correlated positively with salivary cortisol reactivity to social stress in the sGC exposed group. Taken together, findings of this study indicate that prenatal exposure to sGC yields lasting impacts on the development of fronto-parietal brain functions during adolescence, affecting multiple facets of adaptive cognitive and behavioral control

Search for gravitational waves associated with gamma-ray bursts detected by Fermi and Swift during the LIGO–Virgo run O3b

We search for gravitational-wave signals associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) detected by the Fermi and Swift satellites during the second half of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (2019 November 1 15:00 UTC–2020 March 27 17:00 UTC). We conduct two independent searches: a generic gravitational-wave transients search to analyze 86 GRBs and an analysis to target binary mergers with at least one neutron star as short GRB progenitors for 17 events. We find no significant evidence for gravitational-wave signals associated with any of these GRBs. A weighted binomial test of the combined results finds no evidence for subthreshold gravitational-wave signals associated with this GRB ensemble either. We use several source types and signal morphologies during the searches, resulting in lower bounds on the estimated distance to each GRB. Finally, we constrain the population of low-luminosity short GRBs using results from the first to the third observing runs of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo. The resulting population is in accordance with the local binary neutron star merger rate

Poster Discussion Session - Scientific Group 35. Joseph Lister Awards: no. 213OBJECTIVES: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is prevalent in Southern China and one of the commonest cancers in Hong Kong. Radiotherapy has been the standard treatment for NPC for decades. Oral candidasis is an extremely common, distressing and persistent infection during and after radiotherapy in NPC patients. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to examine both host salivary factors and Candida virulence factors associted with oral candidiasis of NPC patients in Hong Kong. METHODS: Newly diagnosed non-metastatic NPC patients were selected for the study. Patients with pre-existing or history of oral candidiasis were excluded. Saliva samples were collected at baseline and during the course of radiotherapy. Oral mouth rinse samples were collected for characterization of Candida species. Demographical data of the patients and details of radiotherapy were also re…link_to_OA_fulltex
