How does gender influence the recognition of cardiovascular risk and adherence to self-care recommendations? : a study in polish primary care
Background:
Studies have shown a correlation between gender and an ability to change lifestyle to reduce the risk of disease. However, the results of these studies are ambiguous, especially where a healthy lifestyle is concerned. Additionally, health behaviors are strongly modified by culture and the environment. Psychological factors also substantially affect engagement with disease-related lifestyle interventions. This study aimed to examine whether there are differences between men and women in the frequency of health care behavior for the purpose of reducing cardiovascular risk (CVR), as well as cognitive appraisal of this type of risk. We also aimed to identify the psychological predictors of engaging in recommended behavior for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease after providing information about this risk in men and women.
Methods:
A total of 134 consecutive eligible patients in a family practice entered a longitudinal study. At initial consultation, the individual’s CVR and associated health burden was examined, and preventive measures were recommended by the physician. Self-care behavior, cognitive appraisal of risk, and coping styles were then assessed using psychological questionnaires. Six months after the initial data collection, the frequency of subjects’ self-care behavior was examined.
Results:
We found an increase in health care behavior after providing information regarding the rate of CVR in both sexes; this increase was greater for women than for men. Women followed self-care guidelines more often than men, particularly for preventive measures and dietary advice. Women were more inclined to recognize their CVR as a challenge. Coping style, cognitive appraisal, age, level of health behaviors at baseline and CVR values accounted for 48% of the variance in adherence to self-care guidelines in women and it was 52% in men. In women, total risk of CVD values were most important, while in men, cognitive appraisal of harm/loss was most important.
Conclusions:
Different predictors of acquisition of health behavior are encountered in men and women. Our results suggest that gender-adjusted motivation models influencing the recognition process need to be considered to optimize compliance in patients with CVR
Metabolic, hygric and ventilatory physiology of a hypermetabolic marsupial, the honey possum (Tarsipes rostratus)
The honey possum is the only non-volant mammal to feed exclusively on a diet of nectar and pollen. Like other mammalian and avian nectarivores, previous studies indicated that the honey possum's basal metabolic rate was higher than predicted for a marsupial of equivalent body mass. However, these early measurements have been questioned. We re-examined the basal metabolic rate (2.52 +/- A 0.222 ml O(2) g(-1) h(-1)) of the honey possum and confirm that it is indeed higher (162%) than predicted for other marsupials both before and after accounting for phylogenetic history. This, together with its small body mass (5.4 +/- A 0.14 g; 1.3% of that predicted by phylogeny) may be attributed to its nectarivorous diet and mesic distribution. Its high-basal metabolic rate is associated with a high-standard body temperature (36.6 +/- A 0.48A degrees C) and oxygen extraction (19.4%), but interestingly the honey possum has a high point of relative water economy (17.0A degrees C) and its standard evaporative water loss (4.33 +/- A 0.394 mg H(2)O g(-1) h(-1)) is not elevated above that of other marsupials, despite its mesic habitat and high dietary water intake.Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP
Data from: Landscape genomics and pathway analysis to understand genetic adaptation of South African indigenous goat populations
Extensively raised livestock populations in most smallholder farming communities are exposed to harsh and heterogeneous climates and disease pathogen that they adapt to in order to survive. Majority of these livestock species including goats are of non-descript breeds and their response to natural selection presented by heterogeneous environments is still unresolved. This study investigated genetic diversity and its association with environmental and geographic conditions in 194 South African indigenous goats from different geographic using Illumina goat SNP50K genotypes. The Tankwa goats formed a homogeneous genetic cluster restricted to the Northern Cape province. Overall, the Boer, Kalahari Red, and Savanna showed a wide geographic spread of shared genetic components whereas the village ecotypes revealed a longitudinal distribution. The relative importance of environmental factors on genetic variation of goat populations was assessed using Redundancy Analysis (RDA).
Variance partitioning using Model I with both climatic and geographic variables explained 22% of the total variation while model II with climatic variables accounted for 17%. Model III, which accounted for geographic variables, explained 1% of the total variation. The first axis (Model I) of the RDA analysis, revealed 329 outlier SNPs. Landscape genomic approaches of Spatial Analysis Method identified a total of 843 (1.75%) SNPs, while Latent Factor Mixed Models identified 714 (1.48%) SNPs significantly associated with environmental variables. Significant markers were within genes involved in biological functions potentially important for environmental adaptation. Overall, the study suggested environmental factors to have some effect in shaping the genetic variation of South African indigenous goat populations
Arterial stiffness, ambulatory blood pressure and low-grade albuminuria in non-diabetic African and caucasian men: the SABPA study
Official journal of the Japanese Society of HypertensionRecent evidence suggests that low-grade urinary albumin excretion is a marker of early general attenuation of vascular function, but studies are limited to Caucasian population groups. We compared low-grade urinary albumin excretion (<3.5 mg mmol−1 or 30 μg mg−1) between non-diabetic African (aged, 41.7 years; n=70) and Caucasian (aged, 44.6 years; n=91) men and ethnic-specific associations thereof with arterial stiffness and ambulatory blood pressure. The albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) was determined from an 8 h overnight urine collection. We recorded ambulatory blood pressure over 24 h during a typical workday and the carotid–dorsalis pedis pulse wave velocity measured the next morning after a controlled overnight stay. ACR was higher in Africans compared with Caucasians (P<0.001), also after adjusting for 24 h systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and hypertension prevalence (P<0.001) or when grouped by similar 24 h mean arterial pressures (P<0.01 for all categories). Daytime (P=0.002) and night time (P< 0.001) systolic and daytime (P<0.001) and night time (P<0.001) diastolic blood pressures were higher in Africans compared with Caucasians, but no differences existed for daytime and night time pulse pressure and pulse wave velocity. In African men only, after adjustment for covariates, night time systolic blood pressure (β=0.347; P=0.003), diastolic blood pressure (β=0.298; P=0.010) and mean arterial pressure (β=0.331; P=0.004) correlated positively with ACR. In addition, daytime (β=0.265; P=0.032) and night time (β=0.258; P=0.038) pulse pressure as well as pulse wave velocity (β=0.271; P=0.032) correlated positively with ACR. In conclusion, arterial stiffness and ambulatory blood pressure are already associated with low-grade albuminuria in non-diabetic African men with normal kidney function
