Structure of the ovaries of the Nimba otter shrew, Micropotamogale lamottei, and the Madagascar hedgehog tenrec, Echinops telfairi
The otter shrews are members of the subfamily Potamogalinae within the family Tenrecidae. No description of the ovaries of any member of this subfamily has been published previously. The lesser hedgehog tenrec, Echinops telfairi, is a member of the subfamily Tenrecinae of the same family and, although its ovaries have not been described, other members of this subfamily have been shown to have ovaries with non-antral follicles. Examination of these two species illustrated that non-antral follicles were characteristic of the ovaries of both species, as was clefting and lobulation of the ovaries. Juvenile otter shrews range from those with only small follicles in the cortex to those with 300- to 400-mu m follicles similar to those seen in non-pregnant and pregnant adults. As in other species, most of the growth of the oocyte occurred when follicles had one to two layers of granulosa cells. When larger follicles became atretic in the Nimba otter shrew, hypertrophy of the theca interna produced nodules of glandular interstitial tissue. In the tenrec, the hypertrophying theca interna cells in most large follicles appeared to undergo degeneration. Both species had some follicular fluid in the intercellular spaces between the more peripheral granulosa cells. It is suggested that this fluid could aid in separation of the cumulus from the remaining granulosa at ovulation. The protruding follicles in lobules and absence of a tunica albuginea might also facilitate ovulation of non-antral follicles. Ovaries with a thin-absent tunica albuginea and follicles with small-absent antra are widespread within both the Eulipotyphla and in the Afrosoricida, suggesting that such features may represent a primitive condition in ovarian development. Lobulated and deeply crypted ovaries are found in both groups but are not as common in the Eulipotyphla making inclusion of this feature as primitive more speculative. Copyright (C) 2005 S. On perfect fluid models in non-comoving observational spherical coordinates
We use null spherical (observational) coordinates to describe a class of
inhomogeneous cosmological models. The proposed cosmological construction is
based on the observer past null cone. A known difficulty in using inhomogeneous
models is that the null geodesic equation is not integrable in general. Our
choice of null coordinates solves the radial ingoing null geodesic by
construction. Furthermore, we use an approach where the velocity field is
uniquely calculated from the metric rather than put in by hand. Conveniently,
this allows us to explore models in a non-comoving frame of reference. In this
frame, we find that the velocity field has shear, acceleration and expansion
rate in general. We show that a comoving frame is not compatible with expanding
perfect fluid models in the coordinates proposed and dust models are simply not
possible. We describe the models in a non-comoving frame. We use the dust

Brane Induced Gravity, its Ghost and the Cosmological Constant Problem
"Brane Induced Gravity" is regarded as a promising framework for addressing
the cosmological constant problem, but it also suffers from a ghost instability
for parameter values that make it phenomenologically viable. We carry out a
detailed analysis of codimension > 2 models employing gauge invariant variables
in a flat background approximation. It is argued that using instead a curved
background sourced by the brane would not resolve the ghost issue, unless a
very specific condition is satisfied (if satisfiable at all). As for other
properties of the model, from an explicit analysis of the 4-dimensional
graviton propagator we extract a mass, a decay width and a momentum dependent
modification of the gravitational coupling for the spin 2 mode. In the flat
space approximation, the mass of the problematic spin 0 ghost is instrumental
in filtering out a brane cosmological constant. The mass replaces a background
curvature that would have had the same function. The optical theorem is used to
demonstrate the suppression of graviton leakage into the uncompactified bulk.
Then, we derive the 4-dimensional effective action for gravity and show that
general covariance is spontaneously broken by the bulk-brane setup. This
provides a natural realization of the gravitational Higgs mechanism. We also
show that the addition of extrinsic curvature dependent terms has no bearing on

Research in Medical Education: Balancing Service and Science*
Since the latter part of the 1990’s, the English-speaking medical education community has been engaged in a debate concerning the types of research that should have priority. To shed light on this debate and to better understand its implications for the practice of research, 23 semi-structured interviews were conducted with “influential figures” from the community. The results were analyzed using the concept of “field” developed by the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. The results reveal that a large majority of these influential figures believe that research in medical education continues to be of insufficient quality despite the progress that has taken place over the past 2 decades. According to this group, studies tend to be both redundant and opportunistic, and researchers tend to have limited understanding of both theory and methodological practice from the social sciences. Three factors were identified by the participants to explain the current problems in research: the working conditions of researchers, budgetary restraints in financing research in medical education, and the conception of research in the medical environment. Two principal means for improving research are presented: intensifying collaboration between PhD’s and clinicians, and encouraging the diversification of perspectives brought to bear on research in medical education
Slogging and Stumbling Toward Social Justice in a Private Elementary School: The Complicated Case of St. Malachy
This case study examines St. Malachy, an urban Catholic elementary school primarily serving children traditionally marginalized by race, class, linguistic heritage, and disability. As a private school, St. Malachy serves the public good by recruiting and retaining such traditionally marginalized students. As empirical studies involving Catholic schools frequently juxtapose them with public schools, the author presents this examination from a different tack. Neither vilifying nor glorifying Catholic schooling, this study critically examines the pursuit of social justice in this school context. Data gathered through a 1-year study show that formal and informal leaders in St. Malachy adapted their governance, aggressively sought community resources, and focused their professional development to build the capacity to serve their increasingly pluralistic student population. The analysis confirms the deepening realization that striving toward social justice is a messy, contradictory, and complicated pursuit, and that schools in both public and private sectors are allies in this pursuit
Measurement of the Charged Multiplicities in b, c and Light Quark Events from Z0 Decays
Average charged multiplicities have been measured separately in , and
light quark () events from decays measured in the SLD experiment.
Impact parameters of charged tracks were used to select enriched samples of
and light quark events, and reconstructed charmed mesons were used to select
quark events. We measured the charged multiplicities:

which we derived the differences between the total average charged
multiplicities of or quark events and light quark events: and . We compared
these measurements with those at lower center-of-mass energies and with
perturbative QCD predictions. These combined results are in agreement with the
QCD expectations and disfavor the hypothesis of flavor-independent

Study of Tau-pair Production in Photon-Photon Collisions at LEP and Limits on the Anomalous Electromagnetic Moments of the Tau Lepton
Tau-pair production in the process e+e- -> e+e-tau+tau- was studied using
data collected by the DELPHI experiment at LEP2 during the years 1997 - 2000.
The corresponding integrated luminosity is 650 pb^{-1}. The values of the
cross-section obtained are found to be in agreement with QED predictions.
Limits on the anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments of the tau lepton
