Automatic camera tracking for remote manipulators
The problem of automatic camera tracking of mobile objects is addressed with specific reference to remote manipulators and using either fixed or mobile cameras. The technique uses a kinematic approach employing 4 x 4 coordinate transformation matrices to solve for the needed camera PAN and TILT angles. No vision feedback systems are used, as the required input data are obtained entirely from position sensors from the manipulator and the camera-positioning system. All hardware requirements are generally satisfied by currently available remote manipulator systems with a supervisory computer. The system discussed here implements linear plus on/off (bang-bang) closed-loop control with a +-2-deg deadband. The deadband area is desirable to avoid operator seasickness caused by continuous camera movement. Programming considerations for camera control, including operator interface options, are discussed. The example problem presented is based on an actual implementation using a PDP 11/34 computer, a TeleOperator Systems SM-229 manipulator, and an Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) camera-positioning system. 3 references, 6 figures, 2 tables
Decision Tree Classifiers for Star/Galaxy Separation
We study the star/galaxy classification efficiency of 13 different decision
tree algorithms applied to photometric objects in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
Data Release Seven (SDSS DR7). Each algorithm is defined by a set of parameters
which, when varied, produce different final classification trees. We
extensively explore the parameter space of each algorithm, using the set of
SDSS objects with spectroscopic data as the training set. The
efficiency of star-galaxy separation is measured using the completeness
function. We find that the Functional Tree algorithm (FT) yields the best
results as measured by the mean completeness in two magnitude intervals: () and (). We compare the performance of the
tree generated with the optimal FT configuration to the classifications
provided by the SDSS parametric classifier, 2DPHOT and Ball et al. (2006). We
find that our FT classifier is comparable or better in completeness over the
full magnitude range , with much lower contamination than all but
the Ball et al. classifier. At the faintest magnitudes (), our classifier
is the only one able to maintain high completeness (80%) while still
achieving low contamination (). Finally, we apply our FT classifier
to separate stars from galaxies in the full set of SDSS
photometric objects in the magnitude range .Comment: Submitted to A
The triggering probability of radio-loud AGN: A comparison of high and low excitation radio galaxies in hosts of different colors
Low luminosity radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN) are generally found in
massive red elliptical galaxies, where they are thought to be powered through
gas accretion from their surrounding hot halos in a radiatively inefficient
manner. These AGN are often referred to as "low-excitation" radio galaxies
(LERGs). When radio-loud AGN are found in galaxies with a young stellar
population and active star formation, they are usually high-power
radiatively-efficient radio AGN ("high-excitation", HERG). Using a sample of
low-redshift radio galaxies identified within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
(SDSS), we determine the fraction of galaxies that host a radio-loud AGN,
, as a function of host galaxy stellar mass, , star formation
rate, color (defined by the 4000 \angstrom break strength), radio luminosity
and excitation state (HERG/LERG).
We find the following: 1. LERGs are predominantly found in red galaxies. 2.
The radio-loud AGN fraction of LERGs hosted by galaxies of any color follows a
power law. 3. The fraction of red galaxies
hosting a LERG decreases strongly for increasing radio luminosity. For massive
blue galaxies this is not the case. 4. The fraction of green galaxies hosting a
LERG is lower than that of either red or blue galaxies, at all radio
luminosities. 5. The radio-loud AGN fraction of HERGs hosted by galaxies of any
color follows a power law. 6. HERGs have a
strong preference to be hosted by green or blue galaxies. 7. The fraction of
galaxies hosting a HERG shows only a weak dependence on radio luminosity cut.
8. For both HERGs and LERGs, the hosting probability of blue galaxies shows a
strong dependence on star formation rate. This is not observed in galaxies of a

Identification of A-colored Stars and Structure in the Halo of the Milky Way from SDSS Commissioning Data
A sample of 4208 objects with magnitude 15 < g* < 22 and colors of main
sequence A stars has been selected from 370 square degrees of Sloan Digital Sky
Survey (SDSS) commissioning observations. The data is from two long, narrow
stripes, each with an opening angle of greater than 60 deg, at Galactic
latitudes 36 < abs(b) < 63 on the celestial equator. An examination of the
sample's distribution shows that these stars trace considerable substructure in
the halo. Large overdensities of A-colored stars in the North at (l,b,R) =
(350, 50, 46 kpc) and in the South at (157, -58, 33 kpc) and extending over
tens of degrees are present in the halo of the Milky Way. Using photometry to
separate the stars by surface gravity, both structures are shown to contain a
sequence of low surface gravity stars consistent with identification as a blue
horizontal branch (BHB). Both structures also contain a population of high
surface gravity stars two magnitudes fainter than the BHB stars, consistent
with their identification as blue stragglers (BSs). From the numbers of
detected BHB stars, lower limits to the implied mass of the structures are
6x10^6 M_sun and 2x10^6 M_sun. The fact that two such large clumps have been
detected in a survey of only 1% of the sky indicates that such structures are
not uncommon in the halo. Simple spheroidal parameters are fit to a complete
sample of the remaining unclumped BHB stars and yield (at r < 40 kpc) a fit to
a halo distribution with flattening (c/a = 0.65+/-0.2) and a density falloff

SDSS J143030.22-001115.1: A misclassified narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy with flat X-ray spectrum
We used multi-component profiles to model H and [O III]4959,5007 lines for SDSS J143030.22-001115.1, a narrow-line Seyfert 1
galaxy (NLS1) in a sample of 150 NLS1s candidates selected from the Sloan
Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Early Data Release (EDR). After subtracting the
H contribution from narrow line regions (NLRs), we found that its full
width half maximum (FWHM) of broad H line is nearly 2900 \kms,
significantly larger than the customarily adopted criterion of 2000 \kms. With
its weak Fe II multiples, we think that SDSS J143030.22-001115.1 can't be
classified as a genuine NLS1. When we calculate the virial black hole masses of
NLS1s, we should use the H linewidth after subtracting the H

Failure in Internally Pressurized Bent Tubes
The analysis and modeling of tube-hydroformed components is more complicated than that employed for sheet-metal panels, due to the lengthier process sequence and variable strain path - from flat-rolled sheet to tube; from straight tube to bent tube; and from bent tube to hydroformed component. These additional process steps make it difficult to determine whether post mortem analyses of tube failure during hydroforming can, and should, be conducted with the same tools and databases as used for simple stampings. To provide a partial answer, the properties of commercially fabricated welded straight tubes were evaluated using a free-expansion internal pressure test and compared with those of free-expansion internal pressure tests on bent tubes. The results demonstrated that the behavior of the bent tube was consistent with the mechanical properties of the as-received tube, provided due notice was accorded to the complex strain history of the bent tube. However, due to the strain-path changes occurring at the failure location, conventional approaches for monitoring strain history would yield (apparently) anomalous results
Two novel approaches for photometric redshift estimation based on SDSS and 2MASS databases
We investigate two training-set methods: support vector machines (SVMs) and
Kernel Regression (KR) for photometric redshift estimation with the data from
the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 and Two Micron All Sky Survey
databases. We probe the performances of SVMs and KR for different input
patterns. Our experiments show that the more parameters considered, the
accuracy doesn't always increase, and only when appropriate parameters chosen,
the accuracy can improve. Moreover for different approaches, the best input
pattern is different. With different parameters as input, the optimal bandwidth
is dissimilar for KR. The rms errors of photometric redshifts based on SVM and
KR methods are less than 0.03 and 0.02, respectively. Finally the strengths and
weaknesses of the two approaches are summarized. Compared to other methods of
estimating photometric redshifts, they show their superiorities, especially KR,
