    Accretion Disk Temperatures of QSOs: Constraints from the Emission Lines

    QSO emission-line spectra are compared to predictions based on theoretical ionizing continua of accretion disks. Observed line intensities do not show the expected trend of higher ionization with higher accretion disk temperature as derived from the black hole mass and accretion rate. This suggests that, at least for accretion rates close to the Eddington limit, the inner disk does not reach temperatures as high as expected from standard disk theory. Modified radial temperature profiles, taking account of winds or advection in the inner disk, achieve better agreement with observation. This conclusion agrees with an earlier study of QSO continuum colors as a function of disk temperature. Two prototype devices, of lengths 1.6m and 4.5m,have been developed, constructed and tested. It was foundthat the concept is sound although greater investment isrequired with regards to the materials and bothhydrodynamic and aerodynamic design of the waterwheelto ensure an economically viable system. The workpresented concentrates on practical aspects associated withdesign, construction and trial testing in Southampton waterof the 4.5m prototype. The relatively low cost, ease ofdeployment, and the fact that conventional boat mooringsystems are effective, combine to make this an attractivealternative energy solution for remote communities

    On-farm demonstrations of low-input methods for establishing legumes in central Queensland

    In 2010 a three year Meat and Livestock Australia funded Producer Demonstration Site (PDS) was established to demonstrate low-input sowing strategies for achieving legume establishment in buffel grass (Pennisetum ciliare) pastures in central Queensland. Butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea), burgundy bean (Macroptillium bracteatum) and siratro (Macroptillium atropurpureum cv. siratro and cv. Aztec atro) were sown by broadcast, direct drill and crocodile seeder methods. Intensive herd impact applied immediately post sowing was trialled to determine if seed germination and establishment would benefit from animal induced soil disturbance. Treatments with soil disturbance at sowing (direct drill and crocodile seeder) recorded higher first year legume numbers than broadcasting. Despite excellent rainfall in the first two years of the trial, strong population declines across all treatments were recorded in subsequent years, with similar plant populations per hectare recorded between treatments at the conclusion of the trial. The results from the application of herd impact were inconclusive. Siratro was the only species to persist within the buffel grass dominated pastures. This trial demonstrated that low-input sowing methods with little or no removal of grass competition achieved poor plant populations. Industry needs to adopt longer fallow management for moisture storage and control of grass when establishing legumes into existing grass pastures

    Human subjective response to steering wheel vibration caused by diesel engine idle

    This study investigated the human subjective response to steering wheel vibration of the type caused by a four-cylinder diesel engine idle in passenger cars. Vibrotactile perception was assessed using sinusoidal amplitude-modulated vibratory stimuli of constant energy level (r.m.s. acceleration, 0.41 m/s(2)) having a carrier frequency of 26 Hz (i.e. engine firing frequency) and modulation frequency of 6.5 Hz (half-order engine harmonic). Evaluations of seven levels of modulation depth parameter m (0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0) were performed in order to define the growth function of human perceived disturbance as a function of amplitude modulation depth. Two semantic descriptors were used (unpleasantness and roughness) and two test methods (the Thurstone paired-comparison method and the Borg CR-10 direct evaluation scale) for a total of four tests. Each test was performed using an independent group of 25 individuals. The results suggest that there is a critical value of modulation depth m = 0.2 below which human subjects do not perceive differences in amplitude modulation and above which the stimulus-response relationship increases monotonically with a power function. The Stevens power exponents suggest that the perceived unpleasantness is non-linearly dependent on modulation depth m with an exponent greater than 1 and that the perceived roughness is dependent with an exponent close to unity

    The Effect of Magnetization upon the Elasticity of Rods

    In the Physical Review, Vol. II, No. 4 and Vol. III., No. 6, is described a series of important experiments which show the relation between temperature and elasticity in wire. In one of the papers the statement was made that the results seem to indicate that the magnetizing effect of the current through the wire increases the modulus of elasticity. The increase in temperature in the wire was produced by sending a current directly through it, and also by sending a current through the helix that surrounded it. The author stated that the magnetization produced by the first method had no appreciable effect on the result, and that if there is any difference in the effects produced upon the elasticity of a wire by magnetizing it, that difference is too small to be detected with any certainty by this experiment.     Evolutionary design of a full-envelope full-authority flight control system for an unstable high-performance aircraft

    The use of an evolutionary algorithm in the framework of H1 control theory is being considered as a means for synthesizing controller gains that minimize a weighted combination of the infinite norm of the sensitivity function (for disturbance attenuation requirements) and complementary sensitivity function (for robust stability requirements) at the same time. The case study deals with a complete full-authority longitudinal control system for an unstable high-performance jet aircraft featuring (i) a stability and control augmentation system and (ii) autopilot functions (speed and altitude hold). Constraints on closed-loop response are enforced, that representing typical requirements on airplane handling qualities, that makes the control law synthesis process more demanding. Gain scheduling is required, in order to obtain satisfactory performance over the whole flight envelope, so that the synthesis is performed at different reference trim conditions, for several values of the dynamic pressure, used as the scheduling parameter. Nonetheless, the dynamic behaviour of the aircraft may exhibit significant variations when flying at different altitudes, even for the same value of the dynamic pressure, so that a trade-off is required between different feasible controllers synthesized at different altitudes for a given equivalent airspeed. A multiobjective search is thus considered for the determination of the best suited solution to be introduced in the scheduling of the control law. The obtained results are then tested on a longitudinal non-linear model of the aircraft
